3rd generation Asian and Hispanic immigrants plateau or decline in social progress

I heard that adult grandchildren of immigrants to the United States usually don't much progress compared to their parents and grandparents. Not just staying stuck in the same socioeconomic level but actually decline in college attendance and earnings. Do you think this is due to the older generation having a purpose of a better life which the younger one lacks? The adoption of American values that lacks discipline compared to their traditional culture?

I think a lot of them probably start to see themselves as more American and want to really fit with the mainstream culture, so they resent their immigrant brethren and their drive to succeed because its like seeing a 'desperate'/'try hard' version of themselves and instead just want to look 'cool' or 'down' (becoming aspiring rappers, bloggers, artists, etc). So they go into those things that don't lead to making a lot of money or starting a business.

A recent study from The Urban Institute reveals what María Enchautegui, the study's author, calls "the U-turn" of third-generation Hispanic immigrants: The first and second generations make economic and other gains in the United States; but the third generation falls back.

Using data from recent Current Population Surveys, this study compares third-and-higher generation with earlier-generation Asian Americans and non-Hispanic whites in terms of socioeconomic characteristics and demographics. The findings suggest a "third-generation decline or flattening" for Asian American and white men as well as Asian American and white women. For each of these groups, the mean of years of schooling among the 2.5 and third generations is lower than among the first and second generations. This pattern is most pronounced among Asian Americans. As for wage determination, the generational differentials can be explained by educational attainment and other basic demographic variables. Overall, these results suggest that assimilation beyond the first generation immigrants no longer improves socioeconomic attainments as expected by traditional assimilation theory. Furthermore, in the case of Asian Americans, cultural assimilation across the generations may actually lower educational attainment and thereby reduce wages contrary to traditional assimilation theory.

my fourth gen doctor father would like to disagree.

but tbh it's true. at school i'm basically the only 5th gen kid who is a crazy overachieving.  all my friends are 1st or 2nd gen asian americans. i have a couple of 3rd gen friends who are high achieving too but the majority of 3rd gen+ are definitely more relaxed about school.

Is your biological mother of recent immigrant background?

it's kinda skewed tho

the first gen immigrants from asian countries have drastically increased in education

the older generations that are here may have lower educational/economic attainment which causes the current third gen of that line to be worse than the current first/second gen from the same country

anyways, the paper you cited in the second conflicts with your point in the first by saying that hispanics just continue to get better gen by gen....
