Do you think Kpop Fans Exaggerate Their Fave's Success in Japan?

I was looking at this thread: http://onehallyu.com/topic/123651-2014-recochoku-year-end-charts/. It's the Year End Charts in Japan, looking at physical and digital sales. Top 100 acts.

Only 3 Kpop groups were on the chart: TVXQ > Big Bang > SNSD out of the 100 acts.

But when you go into threads from groups who debut in Japan everyone's all 'omg they did so well!' 'yes they're slaying Japan!' And it's like....are they?

I mean, what qualifies as 'doing well' in that case?

Both the fans and the Korean Media exaggerate.

I see many posts of  fans talking how their favs are slaying Japan when the general Japanese public doesn't even care about their favs.

Their favs only maybe popular with the Kpop niche in Japan but not the public.

who are you talking about?

The only people I see who talk about their faves success in Japan are the ones who's faves are successful in Japan (ie the ones you mentioned)

But yeah I see your point somehow.

Just cause it's japan doesn't mean it's some distant land where we can't even look up their music charts and ranking

Since when KPop is about Music? It's all about fandom, bragging and chart position. :imstupid:

The "SLAY" word is overused so do Underrated and Overrated.

That's the part of kpop I'm trying to push myself away from and try to dissociate from. I think it would be nice if all of us could move in that direction... Too bad kpop companies market their idols in ways that make it impossible

I honestly think KPOP has good music even though it's heavily influenced by many other genres.

When fans are happy and proud they do tend to exaggerate at times yes, like for example I don't think most EXO-L think EXO are that popular in Japan. They haven't even debut there yet and the only had their own concerts there last month. It's just that when the response is better than expected to fans I think they might exaggerate.

Also when they media/company is constantly saying that they're doing well, others (esp fans) start to believe it as well since they can't always witness it 1st hand.

Lol, ok sometimes charts don't really reflect popularity. So that "niche" means a lot.

Some idol groups in Japan sell huge amount of CDs and do well on Oricon, but they can't even hold a large concert. Why? Because they have a kind of fan that can buy 100 copies of the same CD, which doesn't mean you have lots of fans, just fans who buy many CDs.

Then also goes the hype building "we sold a lot, we popular."

Lot's of successful kpop groups have fans that are willing to buy CDs that cost a lot, buy multiple versions, buy merchandise, go to concerts (which make most of the money).

So they can often be really successful despite not having their name dragged in the media, being on TV etc.

Remember fandom>>>>public relevance in kpop.

I didn't deny that I come to KPop because I like the music songs. But fandom culture with so many its dynamics influence the fans in so many way. That show in this forum for example.

I think we're off topic :ninja:
