"I listened to KPOP because it wasn't like American Pop music"

We hear that a lot almost every time either a boy band going solo decide to go full out hood like Tough Cookie or whenever a girl group does a sexy concept. This really makes me ask this question...

Who believed in the opposite of the above statement?

Either because KPOP followed American trends or because they are listening it because it wasn't like JPOP in terms of the Idol subgenre. For me I would lean towards the former since I grew up with hip hop when I was in high school. Exposed to free-to-play, pay-to-enjoy KMMOs daily, I had learned about KPOP through the hip hop and R&B beats of artists like Ivy, Hyori and YG. Of course, for me I couldn't feel the same love for J-idols because they just lack the same sex appeal that K-idols have despite lacking swimsuit photoshoots. You will never see J-Idols do something like Secret or After School and express a kind of sexual energy unseen in most Japanese idols that you hear about.

So did you become a fan because it had a similar style and philosophy to American Pop?

That's total bullshit. I listened to Kpop BECAUSE it was like American music. What first got me into it was the hip hop, because after 2007 or so american hip hop was falling so rapidly. Korean Hip Hop was more pure, like 90's american stuff. Then I discovered the pop, which was like Backstreet Boys, and Nsync, rather than modern 1D bullshit.

I just like the dancing and pretty girls/boys. It goes both ways really, kpop isn't really like American music, it's only influenced. It's like trying a new food for me. Tasting a new ice cream flavor is easy because although it's different, it's still ice cream, and I love ice cream. Tasting a new animal, however, takes a lot of (vomiting) getting used to . K-pop was new ice cream, J-pop was a new animal.

I like it because it's different enough to feel fresh, but similar enough to feel comfortable.

Not only is kpop like American pop music, it's like American pop music if it was stuck in the past

That being said, I do still like kpop music and I like American pop music as well. At least with kpop, we get fun dances and comebacks are much quicker. Also, most of us probably don't know korean, which adds to the experience as weird as that sounds lol.

I love this description! Although Jpop is more like some bland staple food from another culture to me. But kpop is totally deserts.

Kpop is obviously mostly based in an influenced by western music. But it's distinct and these days about 1,000X more daring then American pop music. That's when I fully switched over. When EVERYTHING on the radio sounded the same. The same beat, the same repeating one word chorus, the same mindless party or cheesy empowerment.

Kpop can be freaking insane. Or sweet as sugar. Or get a hard hip hop beat. Or go disco. It does what pop is supposed to do and adsorb influences from everywhere.

I listen to Kpop because I like it

...What do you expect? I'm a boring person  :soul:

That's like asking me why I love classical music or Jpop, there's a wide range of music in those genres so I can't generalise anyway

kpop is like american music in a language i can't understand so I'm hipster

lmao

In all honesty, I listen to KPOP and (on-KPOP) Korean music because I love the way music sounds in Korean (especially in ballads - Korean Ballads are the absolute best). I love how vibrant, dorky and fresh the idols are, and how we are encouraged to become familiar with them via variety shows and their own reality/game shows. It makes it more personal.

I have a love for the culture and the language too (which I am learning)

I love the aspect of music shows like Inkidayo and getting to see idols perform in a variety of different ways.

I still prefer Western Music overall, by a long shot...but Korean music will always have a special place in my heart.

that is the reason why i'm follow j-rock, especially visual key band. (not k-pop)

i follow K-pop because nice dance routine, and pretty female idol. but now i find that k-ballad is awesome.
