Hopes, fears, and predictions for Japanese music in 2015

The New Year is almost upon us. What do you hope will happen? What do you fear will happen? So what do you think will happen?

Hopes:

-Oricon will finally include digital sales

-And if they don't, someone makes a comprehensive digital chart

-Oricon stops counting gimmicky releases as real

-More people see the light as far as the digital charts being more representative as far as what songs are popular compared to Oricon

-There is a new music show in the vein of Sound Room

-The midyear and year end music shows get a MASSIVE overhaul

-Cool Japan actually becomes a thing and when it does it's something other than a weeaboo baitfest

-A return of diversity in the mainstream

-The blocking of content outside of Japan stops

Fears:

-Sales drop even more

-Stagnation of the current mainstream continues

Predictions:

-New Sakanaction album (maybe even be a best album)

-The indie wave will continue to grow

-The idol boom will further subside

-The top albums next year will be by older rock bands

-Older artists will find growing success due to the aging population

-Most younger acts will continue to struggle to find success due to their demographic struggling financially

I agree with a lot of this, honestly, with the more specific bit being that I expect Southern All Stars to own the year next year.  I'll be shocked if that album doesn't smash big time, since it has so much going for it (I'm still hoping for another Double Album like "Killer Street" out of them, since I'd drop money on that immediately).  A comprehensive digital chart of some kind would definitely be nice though, especially considering how hard it is to get anything close to real estimates.

-Hikaru Utada comes back to duty or makes a "leave me alone" psa.

-EXILE's new album will be more solid musically speaking, but it will sell less than previous ones (I predict some 350,000 copies).

-Hopefully EXILE'd better stop with the gimmicks.....

-E-Girls and its sister acts will continue to grow

And.............................. I dunno what else

The digital situation make no sense... They took away the chart to improve it but killed it instead.

If all of this happened i would drop k-pop so fast. the thing about k-pop is that it's as easily accessible to me as western music, so it's good for quick and cheap entertainment. i already prefer japan for music so if the japanese scene was just as easy to keep up with, i wouldn't need to bother with k-pop.

I really don't know about Ayu... I mean she moved to LA which basically said she's over it. But then she announces this plan to expand in Asia and opens the international fanclub...

I'm still somewhat pissed about that, since there was really NO reason for them to do that.  I'd have rathered they just left the broken aggregate chart if they were going to kill it off rather than actually "fix" it.

Oh, and I suppose I should clarify one particular Prediction:

Mr.Children will release the best studio album they've made in a good long time now that they're self-producing themselves.

The accessibility is part of why KPop is as big as it is. You could easily get anything Japanese years ago. Now to find a music show in full you have to rely on videos are uploaded by the time and date of the show, unless you want to torrent it.

It's like you already have to be in the scene to be into the scene.

Hopes

- Nogi slaying all 48Gs and getting close to snatch AKB's weave

- Chris Hart releasing an original album. Getting tired of these covers :soul:

Chris Hart did release one earlier this year, and I remember seeing an article about him working on his second, so you won't have to wait all that long for that I expect.

Like the Utada cover is probably the most favorable attention she's got in a while, but it's mostly because of Utada.

If only she could parlay this into her own career...

Who do you see coming in second, them or B'z?

Question: Why do people think the other 48s that aren't AKB are bigger than Nogizaka46? Like looking at all the numbers and whatnot, it's kinda clear that they aren't.

Mr.Children will maintain better album-wise than B'z, trust me on that.  B'z last studio set barely did 375k while Mr.Children's did 775k, and "[(an imitation) blood orange]" was released a year later than "C'mon".  B'z new single might do better first week than Mr.Children's last one did though, considering they're attaching a Live DVD with 9 songs to the Limited Edition (and even offering a different cover if you order online) compared to Mr.Children just one version-ing their singles as always.

I expect the yearly charts will look something like:

1. SAS (I really have faith this can break Million)

2. AKB

3. Arashi/Mr.Children

With B'z ending up somewhere lower in the Top 10, maybe even lower than Sekai no Owari.  Hard to say and it depends on how exactly they're going to sell and promote "EPIC DAY".

I'm not surprised. I mean the rivalry was a lot of hype. They respect each other and it shows.

Miliyah being picked does show that Utada basically sees her as her heir as was said by the media when she debuted.

right. currently i use torrents but sometimes i just don't have the time or care to keep up. not that it would stop me from listening to japanese music but i would like to feel more immersed in the scene, with less effort.

and like you said, taking some of the charting power away from gimmicky physical sales (idols) would make the quality music more visible and attract more international fans. currently when curious people look up j-pop the first things they're presented with are like akb48, johnny's groups and kyary pamyu pamyu. kind of a turn off.

  • Seiko Oomori's further dismantling of mainstream Japanese pop.

Older acts to take a damn break. We get it....you aren't bringing anything new to the table.

Newer acts to gain attention and exposure. They're currently releasing the best music to come out of Japan and have diversified the scene quite a bit.

AKB4 can get the fuck out at this point. They no longer represent the idol scene...like at all.

Indie wave to continue growing. But also for these indie acts to stop releasing dull material and return to form in releasing less complacent material instead of trying to fit in.

Idol groups to continue their experimentation and exploration of other genres.

For Japanese music as a whole to be a lot noisier, more experimental, and aggressive. The music this year has been way to dull and safe for the most part...even in the underground.

majority of current female soloist to retire! I can't deal with anymore vanilla cell phone ballads.

Hopes:

An increase in digital sales to save the floundering album sales.

sales continue to drop for younger artist so that my old faves can still be on top.

what's a list without utada and ayu huh?

for utada to sue ayumi hamasaki for single handedly ruining her smash hit classic movin on without you.

for j/e fans to start loving themselves

that 48/ldh groups continue to use gimmicks to see the people in the oricon thread cry about it every time

but also for ldh to stop spawning satanic groups

ceo of rising pro suffers a stroke

Fears:

old rock groups continue to release rehashed 2 part compilation albums.

ayumi hamasaki sings in Mandarin again

predictions:

nothing will change b/c japan hates change

I'm new to J-music and I'm actually wondering if you guys can elaborate on what's going on in the mainstream? I thought diversity was one of the J industry's biggest assets - is it becoming too much like Korea where it's being strangled by idols? And what's the situation on digitals? Why won't they count it?
