On an episode of ‘Hello Counselor’, an 11 year old elementary school student came on the show to speak about her complaint: she’s been attending 12 different after-school tutoring programs on top of attending school. She’s forced to study past midnight until 3am because of all these different programs and all her homework. When asked which programs these are, her mother didn’t know exactly either.

The student complained, “I can feel that my body isn’t the same as it was before. I don’t really have an appetite anymore either.†She continued, “I’ve asked my parents to reduce the amount of tutors, but my mom just yelled at me, ‘Just go!’. My dad suggested I stop going to all of them, but my mom won’t listen to him.â€

The mom claimed, “All mothers are the same. Mothers these days probably all send their children to the same amount of tutoring.â€

1. [+13258,-89] It’s not like sending her to all those tutors means she’ll definitely end up at Seoul University ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

2. [+11343,-69] Ha… Wait until she goes through puberty, that entire family is going to shake

3. [+9840,-68] I feel so bad for her. She’s ruining her health because of her mom’s selfishness and she can’t live her life properly. I hope she understands that just going to a ton of tutors doesn’t mean she’ll necessarily do well

4. [+9840,-68] She’s at that age where she should be running around having fun, not going to tutors;; if she continues at this pace, she’s not going to study well later on

5. [+7619,-75] This is crazy. What is this? She probably can’t do anything well like that. It’s just a waste of money and you’re just making her suffer

6. [+1486,-15] Students like that are the ones who kill themselves when they don’t do well on tests

7. [+1425,-23] I’m sorry, but what’s the mom’s educational background? If the mom has gone through some education, she wouldn’t treat her daughter like that. If the daughter stops playing along, it’s game over

8. [+1276,-15] This is a common monster amongst Korean families.. No one can blame anyone. That mom is a bit extreme, but there are a ton of mothers like that all around Korea

9. [+1208,-11] I feel sorry for the husband, having to pay all that tuition

10. [+1107,-3] Students like that who study that much in elementary school get too tired by junior high that they can’t study at all

are you serious

11?

do you know how much stress a child can get from that?

if you force your kid to do that, there will be many health problems when she's older.

high education is a must in today's society, HOWEVER, there has to be a maximum in parental guidance.

forcing kids will make them want to go against you, especially if you go overboard.

if you want your kid to have a great education, you have to let them decide on what they want to focus on.

let her go to two or three to prepare herself, that's fine, but 11 is just too much strain for someone too young. you could cause so many health related problems from doing this; that's too much. malnutrition, happiness, stress, etc.

Until 3am every day? ...and have to go to school next morning at 7 or 8am? That's definitely sleep deprivation, to say the least.

K-Mom, whoever you are, wherever you are, please wake up. This is neither LOVING YOUR CHILD nor LOOKING OUT FOR HER FUTURE. This IS CHILD ABUSE!!!

That's insane. Some of my students go to about 4 different cram schools but that's usually it. I'm sure those 11 programs don't just meet once a week either. Poor girl. It's only going to get worse in middle school when her actual school work becomes heavier and then in high school. Her parents need to realize that what they are doing is not helping. As mentioned, they are going to burn her out. She's already burnt out. You can't learn when you're that tired.

I don't remember anything worth serious tutoring about when I was 11, what in the world does she need past-midnight studying for?  :soul:

This. I don't remember studying for real till high school and I still was an A student. Not saying that I'm a genius, far from that, but my elementary school is not made for studying until midnight. If so, what to do in college??

This mother is crazy. But I do understand from the momsprospective. Wanting her to be in the top. Hmm.... Hopefully she will but as of right now. Just let her be a child. We don't always get that chance. Esp when you get older.

But if she needs these many programs in 5th grade, she will not be in the top, probably not even near.

Between lack of sleep cutting back her concentration and learning abilities (and actually reducing gray matter in the brain) and simply lack of time to actually learn, I doubt the kid will really top the University Admission lists.

The mother is being ridiculous.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I was in 5th grade, I only went to one private tutor every Saturday  :omg:

This is unhealthy for the girl. When you're this sleep-deprived and stressed about school, you're bound to break, mentally or physically. Or maybe even both.

This mother is crazy. Let your kids be kids and let them have fun!
