bài le yě yào chěng yīng xióng
bù pà shì rén xiào wǒ fēng

All things and all people in their existence are good for something.[1]
Don't ever pick on a youth in poverty.[2]
Even if fail, will pose as a hero.
[i'm] not afraid that others will laugh at me [and think I'm] crazy.

A true man does not bring up past instances of his bravery.[3]
just want to ask whether or not you understand.
[in] love [and in] hate, [everyone] pretends to be calm and at leisure,
[but] who is really able to relax?

All things in the world are empty.[4] As such, appearances[5] are meaningless.
[My] field of vision is filled with beautiful women.
[Though I'm] drunk in the middle of a brothel, [my] laughter [is] full of heartache.
Who will come and share with me an embrace of deep affection?

For you, [my] heart moves. For you, sing.
A loud uplifted song tells all of [my] heartfelt emotions.
When [such feelings] come, [they] surge torrentially. When [they] retreat, I [finally] figure it out:
Life is but a good dream.

T/N:

[1] This is half of a famous line from the renowned Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai's poem 《ä¹åºœÂ·å°†è¿›é…’》. Literally, it says: The heavens created me so I must serve some purpose.

[2] This is part of a saying: 宿¬ºç™½é¡»å…¬ï¼ŒèŽ«æ¬ºå°‘年穷，终须有日龙穿凤，唔信一世裤穿窿. Loosely, it means one would be better off picking on an old man than a youth in poverty because the youth will one day attain success and no longer wear pants with holes in them.

[3] This is also part of a saying: 好汉ä¸æ当年勇，梅花ä¸æå‰ä¸–绣. Loosely, it means a true man does not brag about his past achievements, just as plum blossoms do not speak of their beauty in their previous life.

[4] 四大皆空 is a Buddhist saying. It literally states that the four great elements (cattÄro mahÄbhÅ«tÄni; earth, water, fire, and air) are all empty. Since the four great elements are thought to constitute all matter and consequently all matter is empty, it means one has seen through the materiality/etc. of the mortal world.

[5] 色 has many meanings and here, I believe it is also multifaceted and refers to 1) the material appearance/existence of things; 2) a woman's good looks; 3) lust/sex.
