Zheng Siren (郑斯ä») - 缘殇 | Our predestined relationship dies early

NB: This is an insert song for the TV drama 《å«åå¤«ã€‹ (also known as 《大汉贤åŽå«åå¤«ã€‹, literally "The Virtuous Queen of Han, Wei Zifu"). Historically, Wei Zifu was the second empress of Liu Che, the fifth emperor of the Han Dynasty, also known as Emperor Wu of Han. Liu Che also had an infamous male lover by the name of Han Yan, who was his bandu (伴读, someone who keeps a prince company in his studies). Zheng Siren, the singer of this song, is the actor who portrays the role of Han Yan in this drama series.

Lyrics: 马惠冬 (Ma Huidong)
Composition: 马惠冬 (Ma Huidong)

Arrangement: 肖瀛 (Xiao Ying)

[in a] zither[1] pavilion [filled with] the fragrance of books, [in] black and white, the diluted ink—
How can love be right or wrong?—
Has drawn out the outlines of paragraph after paragraph of
A happy but heavy retelling.

The shimmering of the lake waters reflects my confusion.

Searching for the remaining traces of your temperature.

Suffering in hunger and poverty, [the commoners' children] chase after [Han Yan's] bullets of gold[4]
[Whereas he has] always lived life free and unfettered, without worries or fears.
[While] keeping the emperor company in his sleep, [their] love runs deep.
But when [their] time of farewell comes, it becomes difficult to speak of love.

T/N:

[1] ç´é˜ is a pavilion in which one plays the guqin, a musical instrument of the zither family.

[2] ç´ç‘Ÿ literally refers to two plucked stringed instruments, ç´ (the 7-stringed guqin) and 瑟 (the 25-stringed se) and music made by these instruments. Metaphorically, however, it can be used to describe the harmony of a relationship, whether it be friendship or the relationship between husband and wife.

[3] 白头å•è€ is an idiom, which literally says "white-hair-together-grow old".

[4] 苦饥寒 é€é‡‘丸 is a famous line describing Han Yan recorded in 《西京æ‚记》 (an ancient collection of historical novels about the Han Dynasty). It was said that during his time in the capital city of Chang'an, Han Yan, spoiled by the doting of Liu Che, liked to hunt by shooting ball-shaped bullets made of gold and he lost a dozen or more of such bullets everyday. During this time, commoners were stricken by hunger and poverty and the children would chase after the bullets he lost. This speaks to how he acted with impunity and intemperance and contrasts his lifestyle of extravagance with the suffering of his lover's subjects.

Thanks renn for always spoiling me with such fast yet detailed translation *big bear hugs* :stare:  :chu:

This series can't be sub due to copyright, so I can't comprehend the full story. I appreciate you explaining that part, I thought he was just another prince or his son from the trailers

My pleasure~

I don't keep up with c-dramas so I don't know how this series portrays the Liu Che-Han Yan and the Liu Che-Wei Zifu "love lines" (or really how it portrays the character of Han Yan), but dare I say that Liu Che and Han Yan are the best known and most written about pair of male lovers in ancient Chinese history. They didn't end well though; this song makes it pretty obvious.

The Empress Dowager ordered the death of Han Yan.
