AKB48 broke another record, thanks to the release of their 25th consecutive chart topping single â€œKibouteki Refrainâ€. Oricon officially recognized that AKB48 has become the first female artist in Japan to sell over 30 million singles.

“Kibouteki Refrain†sold over 1.1 million copies in its debut week bringing AKB48′s total single sales to 31 million. AKB48 reached this milestone faster than any other artist in Japans history, having debuted 8 years ago. The girls are expected to eventually break the record for most singles sold, which is currently held by B’z who has sold over 35 million singles. As for solo female artists the title of most singles sold still belongs to Ayumi Hamasaki, who has managed to push over 21 million units.

Meanwhile, AKB48′s still untitled 4th studio album will be released January 21st.

This probably isn't inclusive of digital tracks, or they would have been listed as already beating B'z.

But yeah, these things are meaningless now. Comparing groups of today to older artists is comparing apples and oranges (the older ones obviously grew in a time when people actually bought shit) and comparing idol-marketing acts to non-marketed acts is completely misguided.

Frankly the idol boom really saved the Japanese music industry. Its crazy that not too long ago no one ever thought anyone would ever sell a million singles, but now we get it several times a year. Who also would have thought that Japan would overtake the US as the world's largest music market?

Selling mills of physical CDs in this day an age. Only in Japan. As a collective 48G, I wonder what their total sales and revenue is, it must be insane, enough to buoy a small country economically.

48G working to making all teen girls in Japan join a 48 group as a teenage right of passage. lol  :hurr:

Their total sales usually available on oricon year end chart, and Arashi last year make more than them with 5 members. If AKB can buy small country, then Arashi probably can buy a continent

BUOY a country. If AKS wanted to buy a island and declare it a country they probably could. Johnny's too. They are better off buoying their own Japanese economy if they want to survive, as their acts don't work outside of Japan.

we'll never know how much they get paid, but, if they can afford luxurious homes we can get an idea

Where do your idols live and how much rent they pay? http://jnewseng.com/2014/11/16/johnnys-watcher-rumor-round-up-digest-015/

Let's conveniently ignore the fact that Arashi released an album last year, and AKB did not, which more than accounts for the difference in total sales revenue LOL

The JE artists listed are all well over the typical 7 year contracts imposed, which means that they've had their contracts renewed (and had the accompanying bump in salary that comes with it). I can assure you that AKS has not a single artist that could even dream of affording something like that...
