Media baron Rupert Murdoch has sparked fury on Twitter after claiming that Egyptian people are white.

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings has been widely criticised for a lack of ethnic diversity among its leading characters.

Christian Bale plays Moses in the film, which opens on 26 December in the UK, with Joel Edgerton as Rhamses and Sigourney Weaver as Queen Tuya.

But Mr Murdoch, owner of News Corp and 21st Century Fox, tweeted in the early hours yesterday:

More on how well that went down on The Independent

I've always felt like there should be an in between that classifies Arabs or at least the image that a majority of Arabs look like.

He's annoying af tbh, the correct term would be North African Caucasian. I have Egyptian friends and they certainly are not nor would they identify as white.

But Caucasian is colloquially white...

It's not as narrow as that, evidently you aren't knowledgeable on the topic.

The Ancient Egyptians did not think of themselves as white, but posed themselves in the middle -- darker than Cretans, lighter than Nubians. They certainly did not think of themselves as black either, for that matter.

what????

"True" is a loaded word; they are relatively the closest to the Ancients. Though genetic research showed that Egyptian farmers are essentially the same as they always have been, the admixture seems negligible.

Then explain it...

Well for one modern day Egyptians vastly differ from Ancient ones, predominately due to invasion by Islamists in the middle ages. Though the ethnicity strand is classified as hamitic arabs more so Caucasians, which is a strand. Technically persay there are only three main ethnicities and the rest are sub strans: negroid, caucasoid and mongoloid. Many come under each of those though 'Caucasian' is not limited to the aryan strand, it encompasses, much of Northern Africa, the horn of Africa and Western Asia, e.g. India, etc. So technically they are Caucasian though not in the manner in which Murdoch is implying. Some will have partial African descent though, evident by prognathism of the lower skull.

You can be light skinned and have no problem resisting that kind of sun (I know I do) though

Though definitely not if you're a north european (north in general) kind of white.

Exactly.

Back during Moses time (which is when this movie is set) there was no such thing as being black or white because those racial categories did not exist.

Also Egypt is an African country. so Rupert Murdoch needs a map as well as a history book.

Not sure why Prince of Egypt seems to be the only major scale movie about Moses that wants to actually try and be accurate when it comes to the time period...

I've been hearing from demographers for years that Middle Easterners are technically white. I've been selecting "White -- Middle Eastern" from the drop down menu when I apply for things that ask for ethnicity. He's not really saying something very controversial. I think people are getting hung up over phenotypical stereotypes.

It would have been wiser for me to ask you to define caucasian. I said colloquially caucasian is white as that is what really is thought of as Caucasian. It tends to encompass people of the Aryan race and mainly links to skin color (and European ancestry). Technically speaking if we say caucasians encompasses a part of a region, that is just vague.
