[TRANS] Vogue Girl - the BACKSTAGE: Dongwoo

Meet the new musical actor Dongwoo, not the Dongwoo of the 6th year idol group INFINITE.

I’m currently in the hiphop musical <In the Heights>, which is about lives of Hispanic and Latino American immigrant workers. I’ve done a lot of things ever since debuting as a member of INFINITE; I came out on ‘Live Info Show’, bungee-jumped, and even tried eating ants on ‘Law of the Jungle.’ But it’s my first time in a musical, and I’m in a frenzy because I’m the main character. I have to say my lines in the middle of a dance, sing solo and then add in harmonies, and then go back to rapping while dancing. There are over 8 songs in which I rap in and I do 2 of them by myself.

First of all, after I step onstage and during the 2 hours until the end, there’s a considerable amount of beauty and nervousness about a never ending live performance. Because of this, I practice from 10am until the early morning, excluding the schedules I have for INFINITE’s world tour. Like Yang Dong Geun sunbaenim, when performing, I want to master the ability to keep rapping while nonchalantly picking up a slipper that’s fallen off. Almost like taking it off on purpose as well.

I’ve always liked musicals. This production seems to match with me, especially because of its hip hop base and expressing decisive emotions. The content also touches upon the recollection of insignificant things in your daily life.

My character is Usnavi, who’s originally from the Dominican Republic. The other actors who were cast in the same role (Yang Dong Geun, Jung Won Young, Shinee Key) said this: You don’t need to forcibly try to assimilate with the character. They said that just thinking about being a ‘foreigner’ with a positive attitude and jolly personality, and even appearance and lifestyle, you’ll naturally melt into the role. They said that contrary to what you’d think, you can pick up a lot of hints by looking at the original Jang Dongwoo.

All of the actors wrote their own respective rap lyrics in their own style that stayed along the lines of the foundation of the translated lyrics’ meanings. As for dancing, the choreographers put together movements that were extremely comfortable. On top of all this, (LDP Dance Company’s) Kim Jae Deok teacher, while pouring sweat, would always ask â€œWhat’s comfortable for everyone? Is this okay? In that case, do it like this!†With this exact (expression and) tone of voice.

The thing about promoting as an idol is that you’re bound to be hounded by your schedules. It’s not the kind of work where you have a lot of time to sufficiently practice. So that’s why when I have spare time to practice, like now, it’s very precious. That’s probably why our members come out to watch the shows on the days where (INFINITE) Sunggyu-hyung and I both come out. This is hyung’s third musical appearance. He gave me advice about listening until the end of the other actor’s lines and then reacting, and that matching each other to the point that even if someone messes up on their lines you can naturally improvise, is important.

My mother was extremely happy after hearing that I was going to do a musical. Actually, when I first told my mother that I was going to debut, she thought I was going to be a ballad singer. She was even ecstatic when I went out on ‘Challenge 1000 Songs’ and I can tell that she’s excited that I’ll be singing songs this time too. The members teased me, saying, â€œHyung’s going to act?†Fans congratulated me and were were worried for me. They sent me letters saying to take care of my throat since I’ll be both rapping and singing and to take care of my body since it overlaps with the tour schedule. I want to return all of the love and interest I received by making the audience feel many things during my performance. Because â€˜feeling’ something is a human privilege.
