“I don’t know why I hands and feet curl up like this when watching my acting [from embarrassment].†(laughing)

 

It has been 7 years since he made himself a name as group Infinite’s Hoya. He has shown his versatile image through singing and dancing, rap and more and left an impression on viewers through his acting debut drama ‘Reply 1997’ (2012) on cable TV tvN. After 4 years he appears on screen in his first leading role in 'Hiya’ (director Kim Jiyeon, writer Majortown) and in his eyes a nice feeling of  thrill, half excitement and half fear, is readable.

 

The movie 'Hiya’, which’s title means 'older brother/hyung’ in Daegu dialect, is portraying the love between brothers that’s heavy on the stomach, with a plot in which problem child older brother Jinsang (An Bohyun) and the high school student Jinho (Lee Howon), who is full of passion dreaming to become a singer, have conflicts with each other and reconcile in the end.

 

In the movie Hoya plays the role of the high school student Jinho, who dreams to become a singer, so that he gave life to the movie through the advantage of his background as a singer, through scenes with real performances and others.

 

“When I first saw the movie at the first press cinema preview I felt really embarrassed. Why did I see nothing but shortcomings and only felt awkward? (laughing) Maybe it is because normally, I am a person who because envious when watching people who do something well, but I felt like only I was lacking something.â€

 

He opened his speech modest, but voiced a lot of opinions about singer trainees from his singer background. “Because we became close like real brothers to the other actors on set, I felt comfortable to bring in ideas and ad-libs. In the performance scenes I didn’t want to appear awkward I worked especially hard.“

 

With the movie that brought the burden of being called 'his first leading role’ he did nothing but give his best.

 

“To be honest I didn’t really think about being the main character. I did so, because if you feel too free or on the contrary feel too burdened it can become a big minus to acting. I felt like the only thing I could do was focusing on this role.â€

 

He said that him and An Bohyun, whose role Jinsang he is faced with most, before acting, put more time in becoming close to each other.

 

“The director didn’t give us any particular advises for acting. Because he simply told us that it would be nice if we would be natural like real brothers, I have a lot of memories of us getting close from the beginning of filming, talking a lot and having fun times.â€

 

As much as the two brother’s story’s stage is Daegu, Hoya could use his fluent Daegu dialect freely in the movie. But since he is of Busan origin, in the movie he often got confused with the Daegu dialect, he said laughing.

 

I am familiar with Gyeongsang province dialect, but there is quite a difference in the intonation between Busan and Daegu. No matter if it’s dialect or standard language, the feeling is important. So I spoke following the feeling but because my intonation was awkward it often became a NG. Since the director came from Daegu, I could receive a lot of help from him.â€

Is it thanks to the movie? That he could think earnestly about family was the movie’s unintended outcome for Hoya. “While shooting the movie I thought anew that I will have to get along well with my family. I, too, have an older brother, but when I was little we fought a lot for simple things like my brother taking the New Year’s money I collected. Then I became a trainee and my brother went to the army and there was a time we couldn’t see each other for 5 years. Growing up like this I have thought a lot that now I should treat my family better.â€

 

His younger brother Lee Hijun also took part in this production. In the movie Lee Hojun is a trainee and appears as a member of the idol group Roadking. Since he is quite a strict brother to his younger brother Hoya said “There is a 5 year age gap between me and my brother and it is quite difficult for me. When I don’t do well while filming I get angry and might appear scary. Moreover since it’s a movie with a singer as the leading role I did not want to appear awkward on stage so I paid a lot of attention to that. Since it is important to do your work properly, it seems that I might have been a bit too strict with my younger brother without me realizing.â€

 

He debuted as a singer, but his passion for acting is as good as that of any other actor. After his acting debut, the cableTV tvN drama 'Reply 1997’ became an unexpected all-time hit, he worked on  a lot of other activities, overseas schedule, the like, and singer activities simultaneously, so that his acting break has unintentionally become longer.

 

“I wanted to act again quickly but since the circumstances didn’t allow it, it got a bit delayed. But during that break time I could study acting further so it paid offâ€, he said laughing, also saying, that he in fact searched for a good acting teacher, taking classes with regular students.

 

“We did pronunciation and vocalization practice and while having a good teacher I wanted to enroll in a private school [hakwon] and take lessons. Taking classes with regular students I felt a bit self-conscious. But since I am someone who will try everything if he really wants something, I will try to be active in the future too when there is something I need help with in acting.â€

 

He, who also said that he is preparing for a singer comeback this year, is also determined to act again.

 

“There are no concrete plans yet. But since preparation is the most important, no matter if it’s singing or acting, I will learn this and that by myself for now. When I get the chance I want try acting again or another challenge. Since I still have yet to face a lot of things [this and that]. Whatever kind of production it may be, if you look at me nicely and cast me, I would like to show my “firework acting†(laughing)
