This Week's Artist:

BUMP OF CHICKEN

original.jpg

BUMP OF CHICKEN is a rock band from Sakura City, Chiba under the TOY'S FACTORY label and managed by LONGFELLOW. The band's members originally met in Kindergarden and were classmates all throughout school. They were formed by members Masu Hideo and Fujiwara Motoo at the age of 14 and their first performance was in 1994, during their 9th grade cultural festival, where they played a cover of The Beatles' version of "Twist and Shout". The band continued to play in several music competitions (96TMF and Beat Rush 1996) and won. In October of 1998, they released their first limited CD, "BUMP OF CHICKEN", and the next year they released their first indie album FLAME VEIN. BUMP OF CHICKEN got their first major successful release after they transferred to Toy's Factory and released the single "Tentai Kansoku" in 2001, landing in the top 10 on the Oricon charts.

Most of the band's songs and almost all lyrics are written by member Fujiwara Motoo.

Sounds great!  :stare:

That name though....

The name is honestly kind of amusing once you know the story behind it.  To give you the abridged version, they were trying to translate a certain phrase ("Okubyoumono no Ichigeki") into English; that phrase actually means "The Coward's Hit" or "The Coward's Attack".  They wanted to express that they'd accomplish their goals even through crippling fear.  However, their English wasn't the best at the time, and "Attack/Hit" became "Bump" and "Coward" became "Chicken".  Hence "Bump of Chicken" - terrible translation, but the name stuck, and is oddly fitting as a result.

Oh, and "Fighter" released digitally today (and is already atop iTunes)!  Song sounds sublime in HQ.

Parade at #2, as well. The difference in download numbers is interesting. Does Fighter have a tie-in?

Fighter is billed as the theme song to the manga (yes the manga) "Sangatsu no Lion" - it's being sold digitally or physically with a copy of the manga (which also comes with a way to access its full PV).  I expect that Parade's numbers will increase as the day goes on and particularly into the weekend given that it's attached to the Parasyte movie that just opened today.

As to why Fighter's doing better right now though, it's generally been the better received song both musically and lyrically in particular (it's apparently a perfect fit for the manga), plus Parade has a full PV uploaded to their channel.

Speaking of which, full Parade PV and the Short Version of the Fighter PV:

A manga or a book having a theme song doesn't surprise me. I've seen it a few times within the last year already. I actually like the idea. It's something different. Though most of the time the song is bundled with the book, so the only way to get it is to buy the book. This is the first time I've seen it available on iTunes, too.

Ah, I didn't know Parade had a tie-in, too. That makes more sense, then. I'll be curious to see which does better in the long run.

This story always cracks me up...I just can't. But I adore them and cannot think of them with any other name now.
