Gonna quit my job on the spot.

This is sort of a continuation to my other post : http://onehallyu.com/topic/119493-retail-has-officially-killed-my-joyful-soul/

So I was planning on quitting my job by giving them a 2 week notice tomorrow. But that all changed when my manager decided to screw me over.

Last Wednesday, I asked my manager to let me have the Friday night of Black Friday off because I had something planned at that time. Because I got the most customer contact information out of everyone in the store (including managers), she said she would make an exception for me, which I was extremely happy about.

After I received my schedule for this week, I noticed I was scheduled in on Friday night for 3pm-11pm. At first I thought it was a mistake, so I called her to clarify my Friday night and she said, "no, you have to work that day because it's Black Friday and I'm sorry you got confused on this matter, but when you asked me I didn't know which Friday night you were talking about."

I SPECIFICALLY TOLD HER IT WAS THE FRIDAY NIGHT OF BLACK FRIDAY.

Not only do I have to work that night, but I have to work Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) from 8pm-2am and Saturday from 3pm-11pm. All 3 days and absolutely no time for my family.

I was never in need of the money, so I'm not really losing much. As for using this job for references, it's not gonna do anything for me anyway. It's retail afterall. Never entering it again.

If you're not happy, just quit.

Think she will make me stay for Black Friday or can she not legally do that?

I gotta work Thursday and Friday too, but at least I get saturday off. I'm about to quit too, so let's quit our sucky retail jobs together!

Gonna tell my manager tomorrow before my shift. Think that's a good way to do it?

in Uni i had a friend really hard up for money. There are a lot of temp jobs available during the holidays, so she found retail work at the mall nearby. Her first day was Black Friday. She worked for 10 minutes, and then called me like "pick me up". Literally, she just walked out and never returned....it was that bad.

I don't blame you if you quite. Not only did you get verbal confirmation that you wouldn't have to work...but it's also Black Friday...that's like the worst scheduling mess up ever. On top of that, they have you working the entire holiday weekend... that's shitty. I get that it's some people's life and they do what they have to do, but, like you said, you aren't really in need of the money, so, you're afforded the luxury of quitting something miserable. Do it. I'm sure the manager will not have a hard time finding temp workers.

Make sure there is something lined up afterwards. I quit my job a few months back because it was pushing me towards depression (something I struggled with for a long time before) and it was such a weight off my mind. It can really help you out, but if there's nothing lined up afterwards then you can find yourself in a whole new mess. Is it worth it over three days? I mean I know you don't think the reference is much, but they really are, and sometimes the worse the job, the more weight the reference carries. You really have to weigh it all up, which no doubt you have. Whatever you choose to do, good luck with it!

WTF I thought places only made people work on Thanksgiving if they volunteered to. That it wasn't a we're forcing you to thing because that's a dick move and people want to be with their family. That was the only reason I didn't think stores opening on Thanksgiving now 100% sucked. Because employers all over kept saying working that day was volunteer. Well screw her. I'd quit too.

That's why anytime I want time off I fill out a form, have the manager sign it in front of my face, and then get a copy of it. So the manager can't try and pull anything later. Always get time off in writing with a signature.

Yeah, Black Friday is a non-negotiable. Anyone working in retail will tell you that. If you don't go, you'll get fired so you should just bite the bullet and quit.

So true. Worked at an electronics store for two Black Fridays, and they tell you during the interview Black Friday is a blacked out day and if you miss it you get fired on the spot. But they also were jerks with the hours. You had to work from 4am to midnight that day. Everyone did (which is why I suspect you had to be 18 or older to work there. Child labor laws).

And my manager one year was a bitch and tried to give us only two 30 minutes lunches for that whole day when everyone else in other departments got 2 one hour lunches. That's it, for a freaking nearly 24 hr shift! Everyone in my department said screw her and took an hour anyways.

I have school to focus on right now, so I'm gonna give myself a break. No more jobs for awhile.

Especially because finals are coming soon. I can't spend most of my nights cleaning up a store I care nothing about.

No. In those big box corps, it's always mandatory to work Black Friday if you're scheduled. You can't call out or they will fire you.

Making a few extra bucks is more important for big corporations than allowing their employees to be with their family.

Your manager sounds terribly unreasonable. But my advice to you is to not quit just like that. I would talk to your manager that you are thinking about quitting because of your schedule and conflicts. Ultimately you may need to get them to give you a reference to someone else and it may not give you a good one if you just quit like that. Good luck!

Well I know Black Friday is mandatory (my old job it was mandatory for everyone to work. And a super long 4am to midnight shift that day too), but they were all claiming working on Thursday was purely volunteer. Clearly they're lying asses (which isn't surprising) and forcing people to work instead of spending time with family on a day pretty much made for spending time with loved ones. Next Christmas will be taken away too -_-

you don't need to give a two weeks notice in retail. it's considered "proper etiquette," but it's not a requirement, and it shouldn't prevent you from still putting the job on your resume unless you're fired.

if it were me, i would still quit, but try to do it as amicably as possible. explain that although you wanted to submit a two weeks notice, a major problem you've had since the beginning is that you didn't think you were receiving any consideration or respect as an employee in spite of your hard work, and so you feel forced to leave.

that way, if you decide you want another job in the future, you can still show you do have legit. work experience. if anyone asks, just explain that you wanted to part ways respectfully, but you felt backed into a wall and had no choice.
