Variety reports that Oscar Isaac has been cast as Apocalypse in "X-Men: Apocalypse." While Isaac's closest upcoming project is "A Most Violent Year," it's likely that most will recognize his name from the casting announcement for "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens." The actor has also had roles in "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Drive," "Sucker Punch" and more.

A young version of Apocalypse was introduced in the post-credits scene of "X-Men: Days of Future Past," pointing directly toward the sequel. The movie version of Apocalypse will reportedly be similar to his comic book counterpart as a mutant thousands of years old.

"One thing that interests me is the notion of ancient mutants," Singer said in January. "What would people thousands of years ago, without the benefit of science, think mutants were? And more importantly, what would mutants thousands of years ago think they were? Gods? Titans? Angels? Demons? And if such mutants did exist thousands of years ago, what became of them? Did one survive?"

Isaac is the first confirmed new actor to board the project, joining series alums James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. The film, directed by Bryan Singer with a script by Simon Kinberg, opens May 2016.

Honestly, who?

I think he's a pretty good actor and I have no doubt he'll play a good Apocalypse, but I do sort of wish that they cast an Arab actor for the role because the character is supposed to be Ancient Egyptian and it would be a better fit to the character's history. Still, I hope the very best for Oscar Isaac.  :)

My small gripe here... is not that this is a lesser known actor (who really cares? Marvel film franchise doesn't need anymore big names to validate it)....

It's that they could have/ should have gotten an African...or Arab.....

because i mean.... En Sabah Nur... Akkaba.... this character is clearly not white...or latino/hispanic.... His origins are Egyptian...

Edit:

exactly.

His origins and early history are a significant part of the character.

his skin will likely be painted ofc... but, still.. it's sort of the precedent of the matter...when you can diversify, and it's cannon to do so...why not do it?

^He's Hispanic that's close enough and he'll be painted so it doesn't matter.

I've only seen him in Inside Llewlyn Davis and he was really good in movie so he's not really a bad actor. He's gonna be in Star Wars 7 too looks like he's moving on up.

how is Hispanic (Guatemalan/Cuban/French = Oscar Isaac) close enough to a north african/arab?

north african/arab is close enough to north african/arab.

dude looks like an italian....hispanic or not.... hispanics are the most white identified non-white people in america... George Zimmerman was flip flopped white-hispanic and white all throughout his case...

it would be like casting Jared Leto as Thunderbird and saying they'll make sure he hits the tanning booth before filming. Plus he'll have the eye mask painted on......how hard is it to cast a native american?

People cry foul all day when Hollywood casts a black Johnny Storm (who spends plenty of time engulfed in flames) or a female Robin... but we settle for close enough or not at all, when the rare dark skinned ethnic character in a Marvel/DC film is white washed or bleached? Body paint or not. It's the precedent.

When I meant he's Hispanic that's close I meant that he's a minority so its not like he's being whitewashed. And he considers himself Guatemalan and doesn't look white (Italian or French) nor he's never been mistaken for white, he actually been has mistaken for an Arab. And when I said that's he's going to be painted most of the time I meant that no one is going to care about his race since he's not going to be recognizable anyways, its his performance that matters. Why would they have him tanned when he's tan himself?

I'm just saying that having a Hispanic actor isn't really that bad. Even though most Latino/Hispanic actors have always been hired to play someone of a different ethnicity or race more than their own, we should just be happy it wasn't a white actor.

I think people didn't care Johnny Storm was it was just the fact that Johnny Storm and Sue Storm aren't the same race since they're siblings. And he's not always in flames. Idris Elba ( :chu: ) plays Heimdall a god in norse mythology who is also the brother of Sif.

that's still settling... but to each their own...

i don't are what people mistake him for (did he do an interview explaining this?)... he's still a cuban hispanic... and still easily considered ethnically ambiguous within the industry. That's white hollywood code for... safe call.

Ridley Scott just explained why he cast a bunch of tanned white folks for his film Exodus.

Scott said... if he'd cast "Mohammed so and so from such and such" he didn't think he'd get backing. But i guess if he can make them up to look the part, and if there's at least one person on the cast who's got a mix with some hispanic/latino... it should fly.

That's the reality. And Arab is not a guatemalan. I don't count adding white hispanics in general... as diversifying a cast.... unless the roles are calling for white hispanic.

Also The Human Torch debacle had very little to do with the ethnicities of the siblings... and everything to do with comic book fans being annoyed by what they deem "political correctness" creating non-cannon scenarios. Nobody cries "political correctness" when ethnic characters are miscast. They instead make excuses as to why it's ok.

Normally i could care less about this stuff (although i'll at least acknowledge it)... but i'm a lifelong Marvel fan...and one of the biggest marvel/dc topics has always been increasing diversity and honouring culture.
