Senpie 1,663
How do you define a hipster? Does the word have a positive or negative connotation for you? If you've been called/labelled one, do you like the label?

ETB5 4,512
Someone supposedly 'individual', as if anyone truly is. This ^for your first question. It has a negative connotation for me. If I were called a hipster, I would be offended.

KissontheW1nD 5,731
Kinda like the modern day mavericks of the main stream. I think originally a 'hipster' was like a nonconformist - didn't like things that were popular with other people, listened to artists unbeknownst to most, had some artsy aspiration that most people would scoff at which is where the term 'hipster syndrome' comes from. People with hipster syndrome will dislike something or pretend not to like something simply because it's popular among other people even going as far as to stop liking something because it starts getting popular. Now though hipster is just some weird word. It's become mainstream to want to be a hipster which defeats the purpose of being one obviously and undercuts any really hipsters out there lol. At this point, I think most people would be insulted if someone called them a hipster because of how the word and its meaning has been massacred I mean look no one can even define what one is lol. Senpie 1,663
Someone supposedly 'individual', as if anyone truly is. True, nothing is truly original, or can be. a person that doesn't like what you like So it's relative? Like everyone is a hipster to somebody? This ^for your first question. It has a negative connotation for me. If I were called a hipster, I would be offended. Yeah, same. Have you been called one though? someone who goes on and on about the music they like and then say "oh but you probably would never have heard of them" and then think that their superior music taste makes them better than everyone Annoying. (although i do listen to pretty diverse stuff, i don't like shoving that fact in others faces and act superior). That's so pretentious and wtf tbh. hipsters didn't quite make it into the indie scene Hipsters are a walking contradiction tbh. You know my definition... You. Taking hipster-y photos bcs you're an amateur hipster photographer... Wanting to live in Brooklyn aka Hipster Central... liking all sorts of unconventional shit because you're...a hipster! I'm just fucking with u you know i'm just messing <3 No offence taken cuz i know you mean it in jest. Friends IRL though, they think its extremely cool to be hipster and call me one. annoys me, because i'm not trying to like what i like because it's cool or because i don't want to be mainstream. Hell, even k-pop is mainstream, so... i don't understand!

Now the trend is over and people still call me a hipster. I'm not sure how to get them to stop lol.

Hemlock 1,537
So it's relative? Like everyone is a hipster to somebody? The word is so overused it's lost all meaning, if there ever was one. You'll get called a hipster on the internet for basically anything now.
sane 16,342
A hipster is a unique person who doesn't like mainstream things In reality it's just the natural progression of the scene kids from the early 00s. They got tired of being alternative rock so they went new age hippie.
ETB5 4,512
Yeah, same. Have you been called one though? Yes. but jokingly (thank goodness), by a friend. She knew that I would be offended and was just teasing me.
DocumentaLy 6,033
Are people really still asking/talking about hipsters? It's nearly 2015. We've moved on to "basic" as the word to offend people based on what they are into.
