[Running Man BTS] Haha : Sometimes we take pain killer

Since its inception in 2010, the urban reality series has captivated viewers across the region with its winning brew of slapstick humour and zany antics.

“It still feels like a miracle every day. When I joined the show, I didn’t expect it to be this big. I’m really appreciative of people’s response towards Running Man,†says HaHa, whose moniker comes from the repetition of his surname.

The series sees HaHa and other regular members – Yoo Jae-suk, Kim Jong-kook, Lee Kwang-soo, Kang Gary, Song Ji-hyo and Ji Suk-jin – travelling all over South Korea to perform special missions in a treasure hunt fashion. Week after week, the cast performs incredulous acts and exchange lively banters with the prominent guests who grace the show.

That is, of course, what viewers who watch the show in glee from the comforts of their homes see. What happens behind the scenes though, tells an entirely different story.

“The filming of the show is rather tough at times, especially for Suk-jin hyung who (at 48) is the oldest in the group. But there are many people who love what we do, so there’s no way we can slack off,†he reveals.

“The show is all about physical activities. But during the filming of certain scenes, the members including myself, do get hurt and suffer from injuries. If you take a look at our bodies, you’ll find scars,†HaHa divulges as he pulls up the hem of his black pants to show me some healing wounds on his shins.

“When that happens, we just take painkillers, put on a smile and do the scene all over again. The members console each other because the camera has to keep rolling,†he adds.

After a brief pause, he finally says: “I love being a part of Running Man. All of us do. Eventually, the thought of our audience helps push us through any obstacles.â€

Perhaps the infectious chemistry amongst the members is the result of this shared hardship. On screen, the ensemble comes across like a tight-knit family.

“Our relationship is the same with or without the camera. Sometimes, we eat and drink together at my restaurant. Occasionally, we go to the spa and sauna together,†the new father shares (he and his singer wife Byul welcomed a son named Dream, in July last year).

With such amazing kinship, it’s only natural that HaHa answers, “The Running Man membersâ€, when probed about his role models.

“There’s something to learn from each and every one of them. Jae-suk hyung for his leadership qualities, Jong-kook hyung for his healthy lifestyle, Suk-jin hyung’s caring manner, Kwang-soo’s kindness...,†he says, before adding with a laugh, “and Ji-hyo’s strength!â€

Born in Berlin, Germany, HaHa’s journey to fame hasn’t always been rosy. The earlier days of his career were plagued by a failed singing venture.

It took years of moderately successful television appearances before he finally found global recognition through Running Man. In addition to being on the show today, he is also forging a reggae music trail back in his native country.

His arduous climb to popularity is testament of the make-it-or-break-it nature of show business.

The multi-faceted entertainer’s success story does warrant the question, despite objection from the public relations person: What is that one important thing to know early on in the republic’s highly competitive entertainment scene?

“Sacrifice,†he answers as he stares intently into my eyes. A solemn expression briefly passes over his face before being replaced with a genuine smile.

He puts his heavily-tinted shades back on. It’s time to face the crowd again

I stopped watching, but I still love the cast. I really really respect Sukjin. Yeah he's the oldest and yeah he's usually out first, but to be keeping up with these kids is amazing and admirable to me. He and Gary are my two favorites, but no one in the cast is lacking.

You should watch again. I stopped watching this year since I switched to MuDo but this week, I watched the the last 4 episodes and it's really great and funny. I felt the change of the cast, they became really close and more energetic. I enjoyed the latest episodes because it's really funny.

agree with u,

While I won't say they have completely back to their best ,

I think in last 5-7 episodes, RM has showing some signs that they are on the way back to their best

I stopped watched because I switched to 1N2D and I also found RM to be boring. I'll think about it.

I miss him on Star Golden Bell.  He's such a witty MC.  He also adds a balance to Running Man, even thought he is the one who usually gets eliminated first.  One of my favorite episodes was when he (and his team) won the ddakji (college) tournament.  It's a must watch for any Running Man fan.

Is that a newer episode? I don't remember it at all lol, the last one I watched was with CNBlue

it have been a long time i couldn't keep up with RM .. i stop watching around ep 187 something and will have desired to watch it if i feel like i want to do so. The fact that i have RM since ep1 on my folder and have been following them since 2010 couldn't stop me from saying that the biggest chances that make this show loss it x factor is that there have been together for almost 4 years( and more i couldn't remember)

and of course all the members will not remain with the same characters for example in the early emergence of RM, Haha was known as kiddos, playboy and his childish behavior, Jongkook known for his physical strength and his sweet brotherhood with Haha and Gary, Gary with her obsessed towards Mongji and Kwangsoo being hella funny and pabo. that's character that attract people to watch the show. but as the times goes by, Haha get married and becoming more matured,Monday couple relationships grow more like a very closed boyfriend/girlfriend relationships rather than full of affectionate with each other compared to their early days, you can see they running this show more like a family relationships rather than competitors. plus pd seems lack of ideas in order to bring back this show to their prime times

and of course as one of the rm loyal followers since their early days even i can't catch up with a lot of recent ep, i will be really sad if this show got cancelled( the day will come) or ended because have created too many memories with them. I would feel a great loss / sobs

I have been a fan since day 1 and I will be until the very last day. Running Man is just that awesome :D

Of course, sometimes, there are episodes that I don't like because of the games/guests/... etc. but I have never given up because it's like, I feel guilty toward the members and crew XD.

I might be on the minority but I don't think the earlier episodes were the best. Yeah, they were funny and there are lots of iconic moments which made the show but I much prefer the chemistry between the members right now. It's not just the usual "they are like family, duh !" moments because they have obviously their own lives and whatever but it's a bunch of close people hanging out and playing games together with "other friends" kind of thing. And I really admire and respect how they stick with the show all together during its ups and downs. Obviously, it's doing them good for their careers but I want to believe that after all those years (almost 5), they just can't seem to let go of each other  :chu:  :chu:

You gotta admire all the variety shows and entertainers. In screen, it looks so easy whereas behind the scenes, there are hardships that you can't even imagine.

GAH, SBS should release some BTS videos of Running Man. I will kill to see that, haha. Y'know, them eating together, sleeping during filming ... etc.

*highfive* beeen with RM from the beginning and I agree with your opinion eventhough sometimes there is a boring episode  but it doesnt stopped me to always watch RM I mean its okay if not all the episode is good every variety shows go through that too soo its not really a problem. the again the reason I love RM is not just because they are funny but its also because the members interactions is fun to watch you can see they are love each other and taking care each other and how comfortable they are with themselves thats why I always love episodes without guests too

are the recent episodes good? I'm planning on watching it but I can only find episodes from this year.

The latest episodes are.. hmm not as funny but I watched it because I'm a fan and I always download it. Their opening talk (where they banter w/ each other) are always the best and it's funniest each episode.

This year, there are actually many funny and interesting episodes. I really loved the Racing and Cheerleading (WorldCup) challenges they did this year.

Did you watch any episode? If you plan to, I think I recommend imo the funniest last year. Infinity Challenge ep 340 - 7 Princesses

Watch any episode tbh, because it's a great show.

Thank you so much. Yes, I'm just starting with the show, tbh I haven't watched even one episode but since I like Yoo Jae Suk I decided to try checking out Infinity Challenge.

If you haven't already check out DramaFever YouTube channel.  I set the search for Running Man.  There are quite a few that were really entertaining (It's Ok, We're Heirs, College ddakji Tournament, Macau, White Knights vs Black Knights, Number Race, The Faces of Seoul, Running Man Cooking Battle, and others I'm forgetting ).
