Omg. Created an account a year ago but never leave a comment anywhere. But I had to I just can't😭

Have been listening to GFriend before rough era and every time I feel like losing touch with them their comebacks slayed me back lmao

From the highlight medley I like here we are the most but now it's too hard to choose one...

Really like the guitar/guitar-like synth sound from the beginning of eclipse and dreamcatcher tho

Yay!! Happy that you're joining us here ❤️

I feel you on the struggles to choose a single favourite track!

omg hear me out but I think the crossroads mv needs to be watched together with fingertip and tftmn's mvs. AND i think SouMu deliberately chose fingertip and tftmn as part of tonight's showcase (!!) I'm not one for theorizing but watching the crossroads mv was the first time I had so many eureka moments hahaha. this just a lengthy mv reaction and it's just an opinion lol

  Reveal hidden contents

i think Umji is as much of a main character as Eunha is.

The butterfly represents each time they've had to go back in time and Eunha is the only who realises that they keep replaying. Why do they keep having to go back in time? Because in each timeline Umji dies/disappears and they/eunha is trying to prevent it. The same events keep happening again and again but each mv shows different parts of the same storyline so we get a better understanding of what is happening.

In fingertip, Umji shoots Sinb and then Sinb shoots her back, and that's the last of Umji's storyline. We also see Sinb shooting Sowon and Yuju who are in the car. It ends with, Sinb shooting Yerin, and Eunha falling off a building after chasing and touching the butterfly. Only she falls off the building and ends up in her bed.

In tftmn, we know that Yuju is at someone's grave and Yerin is crying over someone while listening to the casette tape. Even when everyone is having fun running around in the room, Yerin is the only one who, for some unknown reason (hint hint umji), is unhappy and Sowon tries to cheer her up.  In this same scene in the room, everyone thought Eunha looked dead-pan. When they were at the field, buddies was wondering why Eunha was walking ahead of the others alone and sad, before the girls called out to her and chased after her. People also wondered why tftmn ended with only Eunha turning to look at the camera. Maybe she wasn't dead, it's just that she already knew what was going to happen with Umji. Her realisation thus puts her in a third person's perspective to the whole narrative, hence why Eunha's shots always seem like they're breaking the fourth wall. The only shot of Umji really is her throwing paper planes, on some monkey bars (at a playground?), and then jumping (falling?) down.

Finally the crossroads mv. Yuju and Umji have a fight, but when Umji tries to reconcile with Yuju (yuju still has the band-aid on her face), she's rejected. And then we see Yuju continuously running, and she ends up at a...playground? But nothing seems to be happening there. Once again, we see Yerin moping around, in the bathtub and on the train.  What about the eunbi line fight? Considering how she's probably the only who realises what is happening, she's probably quite frustrated and accidentally vents it out on an unknowing Sinb (flashback to fingertip: Sinb shoots at Umji, Yerin, Yuju and Sowon). AGAIN, we never find out what happens with Umji beyond that fight. BUT, crossroads ends with a full body shot of (many versions of) Eunha, Yuju at the aquarium, Sowon with the fireworks, Sinb and Yerin at the train station but...only a shot of umji in the darkness where we only see less than half her face? Speaking of that sequence of Eunha in diff hairstyles, the short brown bob is clearly a call-back to fingertip and the long black hair to tftmn, and the fact that the third version of Eunha in that crumbling house has pink hair leads me to believe that once again, after the events of the crossroads mv, they're about to restart again.  Here's the catch - it's probably the last chance they have, as seen from how Eunha already collected three butterflies and only has space for one more.

One eureka moment was the scene where Eunha saw the butterfly again, fell off a high place again before landing in...you guessed it, her bed again. It mirrors what we saw in fingertip and while tftmn doesn't have such a sequence, we still do see Eunha in a bed at the climax of the song (Yuju's highnote when Sinb opens the door). So I think the mv starts in the present time, and then the mv continues on as a flashback.  Another eureka moment was also when the shot of eunha falling was paused they edited that clock behind her.

The biggest eureka moment was seeing the Yuju-Umji-Yerin storyline. I thought it was only in crossroads, but I suddenly recalled seeing bits of it back in tftmn and fingertip, we see many scenes of them together.

  • When Yuju releases the balloons in tftmn, I never noticed how the mv cuts to Umji looking at something, and then cuts to the balloons
  • Yerin putting on lipstick for Umji in tftmn
  • Umji using headphones, which almost parallels Yerin using earphones to listen to that casette tape.
  • Yerin napping next to Yuju
  • tftmn ends with a shot of Umji at the monkey bars with the paper planes frozen in mid-air (time stopped/going back in time??) and then cuts to the scene of the place where Yuju was/the grave
  • Yerin being the one that is shot by Sinb and tries to reach out for Eunha in fingertip

Conclusion? I think:

  • the mvs are not meant to be literal, but more metaphorical.
  • They keep re-living everything after Umji disappears in each variation of the timeline; eunha is the only one who is aware amidst all this
  • Conflict between the members is clearly what leads to Umji disappearing
    • Yuju feels guilty about something she did not get to resolve with Umji
    • Yerin is mourning/sad
    • Sinb is likely an antagonist in some way
  • Sowon's role also seems consistent in these mvs. I think it's interesting that while conflict is the driving point for this narrative, Sowon assumes the role of the comforter. But other than that, I'm not really sure how she fits into all of this lmao, i guess we'll have to wait for a future mv
  • This is not to discount their other mvs and the other scenes in fingertip/tftmn/crossroads; i just have no idea how the other stuff align with my thoughts ahahaha

I'm absolutely shook that you managed to think of all this a good couple hours into the MV release. I like your theories 👏👏👏

crossroads is a grower but we will only know its real impact after tomorrow and next days. being on top 10 is nice but its new so i'm keeping my expectations low.

Some people might consider Crossroads a /safe/ track but I actually think it's quite an interesting choice for a title track because unlike TFTMN and Sunrise, I don't think it necessarily has something that easily sticks to your mind like bam bam bam or heya heya. Although I am enjoying the song very much, I can't exactly pin point what part of the song is intended to grab the listener. I think it'll be interesting to see the reception of Crossroads as the days pass.

Thanks for the crap packaging Source Music. I hate it. Not even going to try and hide my disappointment sorry for being negative. What's with the sticker and annoying tab thing that you need to open?! As bad as a jewel case ugh.

i was honestly hoping it would be like tftmn/ss/tfu or at the very least FS...was not expecting it to literally open up like a parcel

Spoiler

Same. I'm actually really upset by this tbh because I pre-ordered a set already and did not in a million years expect this kind of weird box thing with a tab that will probably die a little more every time you open the album. AND there's a god damn sticker that you need to peel off. Sigh. I'd take the flimsy packaging from Fever Season any day over this.

I don't know anything about the technicalities of music to be sharing detailed reviews because it's all just going to be "THIS SONG IS AMAZING WOW" so I'll just say I love the entire album and it's definitely one of the toughest ones to rank but here goes:

  1. From Me
  2. Here We Are
  3. Crossroads
  4. Dreamcatcher
  5. Eclipse
  6. Labyrinth

Personally, I think Labyrinth was more impressive in the highlight medley than as a full song. I still enjoy it though. This mini is definitely a 10/10.

I will never in this lifetime get tired of seeing our girls dance. Also need to give credit to their choreographers where due. Their choreos are never hard just for the sake of being hard. They are never meaninglessly difficult but they add to the performance of their songs. Powerful but there's elegance and grace to it. I love GFriend 😭 ❤️

I thought I would be really worried about the big BG fandoms when BH acquired SouMu but tbh, I don't see them causing too much trouble for GFriend. Yes there's some immature and hateful people but that's to be expected. Overall, I think the acqusition has been not too bad for the girls. Would I as a fan have lived without it? Absolutely yes. But it has already happened so 🤷‍♀️

Can we talk how Sowon keeps improving her singing and dancing? I often watch the old videos and performances and all girls improved but Sowon improvement was amazing.

As a group, all of them have improved so much. I think this shows in the line distribution which has, for the most part, fairly evened out throughout the years. Sowon especially, I can see how much her singing has improved and how her confidence has increased as well when it comes to vocals.

crossroads really is out of melon top 50 yikes

I saw a lot of buddies in hysterics about melon charting on various social media.

My personal opinion is that...

Spoiler

I'm not sure if I'm that surprised Crossroads isn't doing too great on melon as of right now. Although I like Crossroads and think this mini is one of their strongest ones overall, Crossroads is an interesting choice of title track and I think it's either people love it or hate it. So I'm not too surprised by the current reception. It could possibly improve a bit once they start promos though and people get a chance to warm up to the song.

As a title track, I think Crossroads was a bit of a risky choice actually. In terms of storytelling and continuation from TFTMN/Sunrise, I think it's "safe" and a perfect title track. But outside of their storytelling, I think it's a bit polarising. Aside from fans, I'm not sure if the GP are as aware of or care too much about the continued storytelling so it really comes down to whether they like or dislike the song.

i don’t think it’s bad... it’s just boring...  it doesn’t have any catchy or memorable part. And is a shame bcs this was their most hyped comeback

Yeah, I think I (and possibly another user) mentioned this when Crossroads released a couple days ago. Unlike TFTMN, Sunrise or their other tracks, it's a bit difficult to pinpoint a specific part in the song that was supposed to catch the listener's attention.

Is anyone else... not really that concerned with charting?  I think it's clear that SouMu is focusing a lot more on fans than gp now.  I mean, they're having another tour, they're bringing in the best sales they have ever so far, I mean I think SouMu is really trying to create that massive fandom that you would see with boy groups, because in the long run, I think it maybe brings in more money than digital sales.

And for people that want a change of pace, I suspect that summer will bring us a different composer, since this is the third song in what I think will be a trilogy (since gfriend likes trilogies).

Spoiler

I feel like the longer I've been a fan, the less I care about charting. I remember checking the charts during TFTMN which I don't really bother with anymore. But admittedly it's hard to not see the chart talks when you're on social media. For me, what I want for GFriend is for them to be remembered as the group with their own style and a group with unique charms that aren't easily replaced by others. I feel that's more important than having every single song be a hit.

However, I think I understand why some people are making a big deal of the charts. At the end of the day, GFriend is a small company girl group. Source Music is not a hugely influential company. The majority of girl groups rely on public interest and generally have a shorter career than their male counterparts. Some buddies might fear that losing public interest is not a good thing for GFriend's longevity even though they do have a respectable sized fandom.

Reading the comments on Genie, people like Crossroads but feel like it’s too similar to TFTMN and Sunrise. Some fans are hoping for a different composer next time.

i think this comeback really established their style and sound, and the fact other producers can make songs that suit it, so it’ll be exciting to see what they do going forward.

Personally, I'm in the boat of interested in a new composer. I don't think Crossroads and TFTMN are all that similar but I can see the similarity with Sunrise (esp in the bit of instrumental we got from the M Countdown preview last week). Sunrise and Crossroads are both songs that I really enjoy and I think the storytelling is absolutely excellent but I'm not sure if either of them would be in my top picks when I'm ranking their title tracks. So for that reason, I'm interested to see a new composer for their next title track.

I think they've really established their winter, melancholic sound but I'm hoping for them to mature and establish their summer sound. Sunny Summer and Fever were fun experiments but they aren't a sound that will be kept in the long run. I enjoyed Flower and thought that was a good track that showed a more mature summer sound. Too bad it flew under the radar as a Japanese track. Though, it seems their summer comebacks are being reserved for experimenting so...

I'm a bit late to the party but the choreo for Crossroads is so brilliant and even more so when you see it in all its glory in the dance practice. My favourite part is the intro and when SinB and Sowon are like spinning towards the center and Yuju's center part in the chorus and near the ending Sowon center and like THE ENTIRE THING. This seems like one of their most difficult choreos and it's absolutely mesmerising to watch.

To this day I still believe that Fingertip's subpar performance is because of the sudden change of concept with the dark military style uniforms. Musically, I don't think Fingertip was that different from their previous title tracks. If they had released Fingertip with a bright and funky retro concept for example, I think it would have performed well. I promise this isn't me pushing my RetroFriend agenda again.

I agree that Fingertip was not that different sonically!! I won't say it's my favourite song from iggy-youngbae but personally it still slaps and screams gfriend as much as their school trilogy

Not my favourite either but I'm glad it happened. Fingertip concert ver. is amazing. The extended dance break is just chef's kiss 👌
