john 975
Life satisfaction in Korea is lower than China and Vietnam’s Translated by: john @ onehallyu.com Pew Research Center recently conducted a survey where they asked different countries to rate their lives on a scale of 0 to 10. 47% of South Koreans rated their lives at a 7 or above. South Korea ranked 8th amongst the ‘advanced or developed countries’, with Israel being the most satisfied country (75%) followed by the U.S. (65%), Germany (60%), and the U.K (58%). Meanwhile, economically emerging and currently still developing countries such as Vietnam (64%) and China (59%) ranked higher in terms of life satisfaction than Korea. (Translator's Note: You can read the full research in English here.) 1. [+1277, -63] Although our economy has developed rapidly fast, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting worse, our welfare programs are weak, we have a lot of decomposition, our education system is headed in the wrong direction, and our quality of life is falling. The kids and the constantly working parents don’t even dinner together anymore 2. [+1017, -69] This research already failed the moment it labeled Korea as a ‘developed’ country. 3. [+956, -31] Do you know why the nightlife in our country is so developed? It’s because we don’t have a set time for when work ends, so when we’re done with our jobs, everyone wants to relieve their stress by drinking or eating out… Germany and other countries in Northern Europe have a set time of 5PM for when they get to go home, so all the stores close early… Honestly, Koreans are the most pitiful but we don’t even know it 4. [+554, -28] So 47% of us said we are either completely satisfied with life, pretty much satisfied, generally satisfied, or kind of satisfied? 5. [+468, -143] This is because in countries that aren’t developed, people think, “This is just the way of life.†But in our country, we think, “No, we can live a much better life†but to make that a reality, it’s too hard 6. [+150, -9] Korea needs to get rid of their Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Most of the nation is still developing, but there are corrupt politicians who get paid by larger companies 7. [+123, -6] We’re a developed country that only sells TV and cellphones 8. [+121, -5] Most of the country are creditors. How could they possibly be happy? 9. [+116, -13] Our country’s GPD PP is well over $20k, and yet we are in the top 3 for highest suicide rate. It’s a serious problem. 10. [+96, -4] Our country is one where the ones who have a lot of money consider the country a buffet and take whatever they want, so how could the remaining 90% of people who are poor be happy? 7

More countries should focus on fomenting work quality over work quantity. Most of the times when people work 9/10/11/12 hours a day, after the first 6/7, the quality of the work seriously plummets. If they let people go home at proper hours, be with their families and have time for hobbies, people would be happier. Do you live in Germany? Is it true that they have an hour long break where all businesses close in the middle of the day or something?
