Regarding China and Vietnam ranking high : do people really think that when inhabitants from a non-democratic country is asked by a stranger "are you happy in your country"  they will get an honest answer from everyone.

In countries without freedom of expression, happiness poll, just like government popularity poll, are always partially skewed because some people worry about speaking openly.

I'm Vietnamese, aside from the fact that we have lower living standard and payment compare to developed contries, life is less stressful, and students don't have to study to death in order to get in university because there are plenty of options. What you said is true, we somewhat can't freely express our thoughts about the gorvement, but from what I observe, people don't have to work for excessive amount of time like in Korea or Japan.

In vietnam i dont know but in china those who work in the big production factories do work a lot according to studies. But yeah korea and japan both have the most stressful work culture. My point was more than these polls are biased toward "we re all happy" in non democratic countries. Same happening in russia nowadays.
