[2PM’s Relay Diary] 1. Junho’s Prime Year

Written by Junho (2PM)

2PM is currently focusing on individual activities after they sent both national and international fans into frenzy as a group since they had come back in two years in May. 2PM members, who are carrying on individual activities in varied areas including music, drama, and movie, knocked on the door of Naver Starcast to say hello to fans through '2PM's Relay Diary'. Now begins '2PM's Relay Diary' where you will hear from 2PM members on how they are doing nowadays and what they are thinking about.

The first member who will share his story through '2PM's Relay Diary' is Junho, who is having his prime year. Recently, Junho has successfully finished his solo tour concert with all tickets sold out in Japan, and revealed an enormous potential as an actor in the movie 'Cold Eyes'. As a singer-songwriter and a successfully debuted actor, he is receiving a great attention both nationally and internationally.

Shall we listen to his story 'Junho's prime year' then?

Quote

Hello, readers of Naver Starcast! This is Junho from 2PM. How are you doing in this muggy weather? Is everything okay? I am taking a short break after finishing the Tokyo concert, one of my first solo tour. I think that I have never been this busy since my debut. It is very hot and rains a lot, but I am having happy days with the pleasant nervousness from my first solo tour!

In the early morning of July 7 on my way to airport. Can you hear my heartbeat?

Before the take-off of the airplane for the first concert

I think that there were few opportunities for me to sing alone on stage since I debuted as 2PM. In our concert, I sang alone but the 2PM members were always with me behind the stage. Probably that is why I was so nervous about my first solo concert. I am still with the members but the latest tour grew my special affection for them.

Ahead of my concert, I firstly gathered about 100 staff members for 'my' concert and asked in a loud voice them to do their best. Those both from JYP Japan and headquarters, makeup artists, hairstylists, stylists, stage, lighting and sound crew were looking at me and I was overwhelmed by their eyes. I quietly thought, 'Ah.. it really starts right now.I should do my best!'.

It was a whole different feeling. The concert hall and stage for my first solo concert was a venue where 2PM had the first concert in Japan. I could not believe that I was having a concert alone at the same place where we used to be together. The overwhelming feeling when I stood before the audience is unforgettable! I was speechless at the sight of the lights held by fans who packed the concert hall. It did not sink in until I heard the deafening cheers. Okay! Let's get it started finally!

The yellow lights that packed the concert hall. I cannot show you the entire show through pictures, but I was really overwhelmed with such a great response

I thought a lot about the concert and album. I thought really hard. I wanted to add more tracks and more showtime since I had so many things to show to my fans. I filled the stage and time given to me with the most Junho-like songs and performances. I had two cover songs, but, except for them, all songs were 100% self-composed songs. I sang and danced with all my heart with the accompaniment of fans' cheers. I talked with fans more than ever. I felt extremely exhilarated! You will never imagine it.

Touring around Japan, I saw my first solo album ranked first on Tower Records, and third on Oricon. What was the feeling like? It was absolutely fantastic!

The happy smile worn on Junho's face throughout the concert

It is true that I feel a little lonely compared to when I am with other members. I also feel a sense of responsibility to take care of my staff members. When I arrived in airport early, I claimed baggage together with my manager or asked the staff members if they had had a meal. I found myself taking care of my staff members (During the tour, the cool choreographer Namyong celebrated his birthday! I threw him a Junho-style surprise party). I come up to the stage in great support from 2PM members through cheering messages and affectionate calls. Nichkhun came all the way to Japan to support me and saw my concert! He may be the busiest person among us due to the Korea-China-Thailand schedule, but he showed up. Nichkhun, I was surprised and moved. And our Chansung! I cannot believe that he moved me like this, too! Our 2PM members are nice, aren't they? I really love you, guys!

Now I have only one concert left which will be held at Tokyo International Forum late August. It feels like one month has just flied. I think that I had the greatest July in the world thanks to Lee Junho's first solo tour concert 'Kimi no Koe'. I just want to thank beloved fans who are always with me, 2PM members who sent passionate support, and staff members who did their best. I do not know how I could express my deep gratitude best. The director of JYP Japan even prepared an encore costume for me, celebrating my first solo tour! Every day was touching since I spent the days with the warm-hearted fans and staff members.

A rare picture from a waiting room. The charismatic director prepared a costume for me! I have never seen her like that.

Undertaking the first solo concert and seeing many people listen to and love my music, I came to have more ambition and passion for music. That is why I want to try harder. I wish I could find melodies that only Lee Junho can make among all the countless songs in the world, and write lyrics expressing Lee Junho's own sentiment. What I aspire to do is to create a deep sympathy with people through my songs containing my heart and thoughts. That is the kind of music that I want to do.

Passionate rehearsal for the first tour concert

As much as I am passionate about singing, I am attracted to and ambitious about acting. I was really busy since the concert schedule and the filming schedule for my first movie 'Cold Eyes' were overlapped (I was excited at the news of the number of audience members having exceeded 5.2 million!). Acting is different from singing for sure. The process of learning to study and express a certain character is very fun. It makes me set a bigger goal. I learned a lot while filming the first movie with great actors. I learned a lot in practice and I have a bigger dream as an actor. Actor Lee Junho hopes to have a broader view of acting by appearing in many different movies.

Did you enjoy my story? I am going to go back to Korea soon and see our fans at a fan meeting.

I promise to impress you with a gorgeous Junho! Be healthy and see you in Korea!

JUNHO From 2PM – a completely self-composed solo starts!

2PM successfully finished their dream-like two day concert at Tokyo Dome this April and are currently finishing up their promotional activities in Japan. Amongst the members, Junho, equally talented in both singing and dancing, has fulfilled his wish of being the first to debut as a solo artist in Japan.

All of the songs on his first solo mini album <Kimi No Koe> are written by Junho himself. From refreshing songs creating a mood as bright as a summer’s day, to beautiful ballad tracks, to mature and interesting R&B styled music, each song’s individual story and character is clearly expressed. Junho’s expressive and impressive vocals perfectly complete this album from all angles. Regarding this album, Junho said: “This is an album that fully shows who I am†and so we got the chance to discuss some composing issues with him.

“Solo debut, I’m feeling really great! (laughs)â€

-    You are the first member of 2PM to have your solo debut in Japan, have you had this wish from the beginning?

  • Yes. However, because I’m in 2PM and had other activities to attend to rather than hoping that I can release my solo quickly; I thought that releasing it at the right timing was most important.

-    Then, what was it like when your solo debut was confirmed?

  • I was directly given the opportunity through the company’s message. At that time I thought to myself; “Has the time finally come?†and so I happily accepted the challenge.

-    When it comes to Junho, then we all know that within the group you’ve got amazing singing and performing abilities! Therefore when I first heard about this news I was really anticipating it and thought; “What kind of product will Junho come out with?â€

  • Hahaha (laughs) Thank you. When my solo was confirmed I was feeling great (laughs). But even after a long time since the confirmation of this news I wasn’t allowed to reveal this to the fans. After about half a year later, I really wanted to tell everyone although I couldn’t… that at that time I was currently preparing for my solo (laughs).

-    If so, that means during the Tokyo Dome concert this April it was already confirmed?

  • Yes, it was already confirmed. To be honest at that time I really wanted to reveal it to everyone (laughs).

“Composing was my own wish, I believe in my own emotionsâ€

-    All the songs in the solo debut mini album <Kimi No Koe> were written and composed by Junho. With 2PM you also released some of your own songs, when did you actually begin to write songs?

  • There was never an actual time when I began to compose. At the start, I was just playing on the keyboard and tried composing; I was still a trainee then. That should be around 2006-2007. Because I originally really enjoy music and it had always been one of my interests… I wanted to try composing professionally whilst playing on the keyboard.

-    On average, do you use the keyboard when composing?

  • When arranging the MIDI I’d use the keyboard. Therefore, playing the basics on the keyboard and adding the harmonies for that scale is how I usually finish composing a song fully.

-    Regarding the composing process this time, did you have any particular emotions during it? For example; “This is a product that will be released in Japan†or such thoughts in that area

  • No, that wouldn’t be the most special area. Basically I composed according to how I wished it to be and believed in my own emotions. The only issue was because the lyrics are in Japanese, there were some levels of worry whether the melody will suit Japanese phrases or not.

-    How did you write out the Japanese lyrics?

  • Basically I used Korean to write out the overall concept and theme of the lyrics, and then I let a Japanese lyricist to translate it into proper lyrics. But I wrote the bridge section in the title song, <Kimi No Koe> in Japanese from the beginning.

photo03_zpsa8c05c46.jpg

‘â€Your Voice†is the fans voices’

-    <Kimi No Koe> was the first completed song of this album. At what moment did this song begin to develop?

  • Just like I said before, the Japanese lyrics to the bridge of <Kimi No Koe> suddenly appeared in my head. I wanted to develop this song further with this part being the centre focus. The melody was initially decided upon after the general structure of the lyrics was written; it was created to match the overall feel of the song.

-    “Your Voice†for Junho, what does this specifically mean to you?

  • When this phrase comes to mind, the fans are the first ones I think of. Because the “you†in this song represents the fans. However, it is also possible to change it to your own lover’s voice as well. That way, you can listen to this as if it’s a pure and innocent love song.

-    That means, during the lyric writing process you were thinking about the fans?

  • That is the case for both <Kimi No Koe> and <Like a Star>. For the other songs, they’re the usual love songs – they weren’t written particularly for anyone. However, because not all the songs were composed with a; “I hope this certain person will hear this song†mind-set, I hope that when people listen to the song they can experience different emotions and receive different messages.

-    <Kimi No Koe>’s melody in the bridge section has 2 phases, leaving a deep impression on the audience.

  • Thank you. In fact, this section originally is different from what it is like now. But then I thought to myself; “it seems like something is missing here?†In the end, it was completed in this more cheerful and energetic version.

-    In fact, if this song was performed in a concert the atmosphere would definitely be hot.

  • If the atmosphere is that great then I’d be very happy!

-    During the interlude there’s a rap-like section which created an interesting and special effect to the song. Was this also your own idea, Junho?

  • Yes, if you’re just going to listen to the song then it’s okay. However, looking at it from a performance aspect then the interlude would seem a little tedious. Music is of course something I’m good at and because the focus is also placed on the choreography this time, I thought of this idea. Because the beat is strong in the interlude, I hope that the dance can also be very eye-catching.

The relationship with bestselling composer – Hong Jisang

- I also watched the MV, it was filmed in Korea right?

  • Yes. The key concept of the MV was to be refreshing. The location during the dance break was my idea, as I wanted to dance on an open bridge where the sun shines down on it. The storyline talks about how my girlfriend and I are both working hard to achieve our own dreams, but because we’re so busy we can’t meet each other as often. After hearing her voice on the phone I feel blessed, I want to meet her so in the end I quickly rush over to meet my girlfriend.

-    In my personal opinion, the last scene was really good.

  • I also really like it (laughs). The scenery behind us was also beautiful!

-    But, majority of the album was completed alongside JYP’s bestselling composer, Hong Jisang, who has written many well-loved and popular hit songs for 2PM. How did it feel to work with him?

  • I go to their work studio in the company to play quite often. Even when it was just a random day, Hong Jisang would start playing the piano and I’d start humming melodies – we compose with a playful feel. That’s why we didn’t have an overly serious “okay, let’s start composing†feel this time as well; instead we created the songs which developed naturally through our usual interactions.

-    Hong Jisang isn’t just your work partner, at the same time he can also have an older brother like presence for you, right?

  • For me, Hong Jisang has taught me many things about music, we were already really close personally since I was a trainee. For example; whenever I went to visit him at his studio at night he’d seriously discuss music related topics with me.

photo07_zps7c2a6f7b.jpg

“Infinitely expanding the creative possibilities in performingâ€

-    Apart from the song <Kimi No Koe>, how do you think feelings can coordinate with your album?

  • If I had to use one word to describe this album’s concept then it’d be “myselfâ€. In this album it has combined my current thoughts and the messages I want to transmit to the fans. For example if the theme of the song was “love†then I would integrate my own feel and emotions into the song to express the message.

-    If that is so, then this album also includes your own view on love?

  • No, compared to my own views on dating, I wrote most of the songs by imagining my emotions when in a relationship. The song <I Love You> is such an example.

-    Within the song <I Love You>, key phrases regarding sunflowers are present, these bittersweet lyrics are very impressive.

  • This song was written from a point of view that “the person I love is the sun and I am the sunflower†– with an “I am always looking towards you†message. ‘Although the feelings we both have for each aren’t very clear, but let’s progress further and date…’ This song brings out that kind of nervous and shy emotions of new couples.

-    There is also a rap at the second half of this song, your voice sounded extremely sweet!

  • Rap often gives people the feel of someone speaking to you. It’d be nice if you listened to this song whilst imagining I’m by your side, speaking to you.

-    Now when it comes to the two songs, <Close Your Eyes> and <Heartbreaker>, they are more mature and adult-like songs which also leaves a deep impression. This sexy guy image is great too! (laughs)

  • I hope everyone can listen to <Close Your Eyes> through earphones whilst closing your eyes, I wrote this song to create this relaxed feel. Though indeed you can only experience this situation when in love…

However, with such a sexy performance wouldn’t it cause your fans to blush and make their heart beat rapidly?

  • If it happens then that’d be great (laughs). Because I wanted to show everyone all my different views on love through this solo, I hope everyone will anticipate it well!

-    How did you feel when recording?

  • During the falsetto area in <Close Your Eyes>, I was a little embarrassed to let the other staff members hear me sing. So I just had Hong Jisang remain in the room with me, “Could everyone else please leave the room for a moment please†(laughs) Even I don’t know why I felt that way, I was unusually shy.

-    In the future would you like to challenge more mature music styles like this?

  • This time around I tried to display “the current me†to everyone, but as I grow older I think that the music I want to express will begin to change. Therefore, it’s not easy to set such a specific music style, perhaps at that time I want to express more natural messages. This is the fun and interesting part of music; I hope that in the future I can infinitely expand the creative possibilities in my performances.

photo04_zps9ca732cd.jpg

“During the concert, I want everyone to experience the current me and my musicâ€

-    However, apart from the composition of this album – the album cover photoshoot, PV and even the choreography Junho, you participated in the making process. Because I never imagined that you would even take part in those areas, I was really shocked.

  • Regarding the songs, I always had a strong love to sing my own self-composed songs. At that time, I never thought of participating in the album cover and MV, but when I discussed with the staff members ‘how I was going to perform my songs on stage’ my own ideas and thoughts began to spill out. I also wanted to transmit these thoughts of mine so when we were confirming from the start about the making process I also included some of my views. In the end, I participated in the whole production of this solo.

-    I think that you went through a very valuable production process, is there anywhere that you’d like to go back and fix?

  • Because different events and activities were held at the same time as the production, to be honest it was really difficult (laughs). However, even in such a tight schedule most of the time I was still really happy - that was a great feeling. The finished product is also satisfying for me as well as others.

-    Now, although during this interview your solo hasn’t started yet but we heard that revolving around this album solo your first solo concert tour is already confirmed. Are you nervous?

  • I’m not nervous at all (laughs). I’m usually the type to only become nervous just before going up on stage. Instead of saying that I’m not nervous now, it’d be more accurate to say that the reality hasn’t hit me yet.

-    Apart from the finale day which will be held at Tokyo’s International Forum Hall A, the rest of the venues are all the ZEPP tour music halls across Japan. Were these venues also chosen by Junho?

  • Yes. It’s because I want to interact with the fans up-close. Also 2PM’s first Japan tour was also held in ZEPP halls. To be honest, because from the beginning I had this dream and thought “it’d be great if I was able to hold a ZEPP national tour when I have a solo†and since it’s finally coming true I’m extremely happy.

-    Do you have such a passion for the stage?

  • Just like the album, I want to allow everyone to experience the current me and my music. Because the concert consists of all my self-composed songs, I want to have a more natural stage … in short, I hope that everyone can come and experience this with me.

-    Since you have to MC alone, are you worried?

  • Honestly, yes I’m really worried, that’s why I am desperately practicing right now! (laughs) But I also wonder whether I can focus and calmly say all the things that I want to tell the fans at that moment.

-    I’m really anticipating it. The members will also come to watch your concert, right?!

  • I think that they would come if their schedule and time allows them to, just hearing that idea makes me begin to anticipate too (laughs).
