Parliament Hill is in under lockdown and the RCMP is advising people to stay away from Parliament Hill after shots were fired from inside the halls of the centre block and a man believed to be a soldier was shot at the National War Memorial.

CTV News' Katie Simpson was at the War Memorial in Ottawa on Wednesday morning, and witnessed passersby attending to someone who had been shot.

Police said a man believed to be a member of the Canadian Forces was shot at the memorial.

Jason MacDonald, director of communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, tweeted that Harper is safe and has left the area.

The RCMP is advising people to stay away from the area.

Several MPs also took to Twitter to say that they were safe. Several described what they had heard, and many said they were in hiding.

MP Tony Clement tweeted that at least 30 shots were fired.

Soldier shot at War Memorial

Witnesses at the War Memorial told Simpson they saw a man with long hair carrying a rifle and heard four shots fired.

One witness told her that he saw the man with the rifle then run towards Parliament Hill. Simpson said the shooter is still on the loose and it is still an active investigation.

The shooting comes two days after a man attacked two Canadian soldiers in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. One of those soldiers died from his injuries. The suspect was shot and killed by police.

Shooting at the Rideau centre to...where I take the bus everyday. This is so fucked up things like this just don't happen here.

CNN just confirmed that reports of the Rideau Centre shootings were false

I go through Rideau Centre almost every day so I'm pretty freaked out by the situation too

I hope that no one else dies and this situation is quickly brought to an end

Yeah it's pretty intense my mom works at the supreme court and they were in lockdown for a really long time and no one was allowed to take their cars home. They told my mom to just stay home tomorow, it's so surreal. I hope everyone stays safe and is extra careful this year on Halloween.
