Official Liar Game Thread (Korean Drama)

Episodes 5 and 6 have been released and fully subbed! Impressions, thoughts?

My questions

1) Do you think we'll see a more fully fleshed and developed romance between the main couple?

2) Who has been your favourite character thus far and why?

1. I hope so! This is so out of character for me because I hate the tired old romantic plot of men being attracted to women that remind them of their mothers. It's so played out and creepy. I'm conflicted on this issue but there's a chance NDJ will have some character development and therefore won't totally be a replacement mother for CWJ. These doubts are all buried, however, when I see them together because it's such an interesting dynamic in a couple- the girl who can't lie and the guy who hates liars/sees through them. He's helping her become more sharp and she's helping him learn to be more trusting and an overall better person. Also, there is great chemistry between the lead actors.

Anyone else find it weird that some drama men are so bent on work, revenge, etc. that they don't seem to have a dating life until the female lead comes into the picture? Like how CWJ isn't out there trying to make up for a lost year is beyond me lol. There seems to be even lighter hints about CWJ and the reporter but I hope not. While she fits him better in the sense that she's quick-witted, it's so safe (in general).

2. Probably Kang Do Young because he's a psycho and I love it. The actor portrays him so well. How awkward he was in feigning sympathy at the end of ep 6 is spot on. His creepiness, intelligence, sadistic tendencies and his lack of real emotions, which stands at odds with everything and everyone around him- because everyone's lives go on. They all portray varied emotions. Even his anger is somewhat muted. My favorite thing is his deadpan face when something is changed or doesn't go his way (he'll like be smiling then turns serious really quickly). It's like he's angry but quickly maps out how the changes can be accounted for and how to still continue with his master plan.

Questions for the next set of episodes:

1) What do you think PD is going to do about KDY? She seems suspicious but unable to act on her suspicions

2) What do you think the connection is to L company? This has been a major theme throughout and there are already some theories, but it'd be fun to see who is closest at the revelation

3) And just for fun, post a gif or picture of the most attractive moment of one of the male or female characters from the show so far!

1. I feel like she might be the first to figure it out if she takes the time to snoop but won't be able to let anyone else know. How messed up would it be if she finds out at the end? I like her. She doesn't deserve to be in the dark. On a more mature level, her relationship to KDY kind of mirrors NDJ/CWJ in that she trusted him blindly when he said his intentions were pure in making the game and KDY is like a genius. It's funny because the PD is always getting frustrated with how naive NDJ is...

2. It was after ep 5 and I haven't thought to update it but here's my theory...

Okay, I just finished episode 5 and I have a small theory. Is Do Young the one behind scheming Woo Jin’s mother and the one behind that company (L company)? The whole “reason†he’s doing this show is because he had a bit of financial trouble despite supposedly being a finance wiz (or so it would seem since he worked on Wall Street). He purposely chose some people associated with the L company which is already sketchy and it seems like Woo Jin came at a time that he wasn’t expecting him but that made him VERY happy. At the end of the episode Woo Jin says something like, “you want to make us suffer as much as you did†or something like that. He could very well be saying that to another character but that quote stuck out. It seems like Do Young is trying to get his revenge on someone or figure something out through this game.

3. Can't find a gif but it's the face CWJ makes when he catches NDJ online looking up comments of herself. He slightly smiles and you can see his dimples. I'm here for anytime you can slightly see CWJ's dimples

omg do you guys think Cha Woo Jin and Kang Do Young are like Sherlock and Moriarty?

Where Moriarty runs all this underground crime but likes to play around with Sherlock because he's the only one that can kind of match him in terms of intelligence?

What if Kang Do Young is really just doing all this because he's bored? idk if i'd laugh or cry if it was this simple...lol

edit: ohhh jk I should've finished the ep before I started making theories. this drama has me on edge

Ok, so I immediately researched Walden 2 after the last episode, but I've been busy and couldn't do much more XD

Here's the wiki link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walden_Two

Basically it is a novel by the famous behavioural psychologist B Skinner. Skinner was a radical behaviourist, he believed that we as humans, while born with genetic and biological endowments, are primarily determined by what occurs in our environment. The novel itself presents the viewpoints of various people who are shown the utopian society of Walden Two, in which the way that society is run is constantly changed in order to reflect what evidence is suggesting to be the best, and thus avoid the downfalls that societies before have faced (in which they have rigid social and governmental structures that could not adapt when necessary). The community itself is governed by constantly changing individuals, so as to avoid bias, and thus the founder claims that the community itself follows no system of governance. The novel ends with all of the people becoming permanent members of the community, despite one person in particular feeling uneasy that the founder himself is actually just imposing a disguised autocracy.

What I found particularly notable is that there have been attempts to create real life communities based on the ideas presented in the novel after it was published, and these are detailed in the wikipedia article.

Now onto how I think this fits in with the drama. Walden 2 is a community that was established and in which Do Young was forced to appear in from an early age. He would want to destroy all of society's rigid rules that are imposed on people, through the confines of money, and free them from governmental rule in particular. That's probably why he showed such significant disdain at the politicians and towards the broadcast official who keeps trying to impose his own rules.

I though the explanations for micro expressions a little lacking tbh. We all have micro expressions. But maybe that was something lost in translation. I think the symbolism of the mask is particularly important, was Do Young taught to have such incredible control of his expressions? It seems learned from the end scene. Walden 2 communities are continuously attempting to improve themselves through behavioural science which focuses on learned behaviour.

I'm still confused as to how L company and Jin Woo's mother and their connection to all this. Perhaps it was a punishment for people who feel compelled by money? Perhaps it was a way to "save" them, after all, the people who returned the money were the ones who got to participate in the Liar Game.

Another interesting theory? L company, or the company behind it IS Walden 2. Los Horcones is an international community based on the system from Walden 2, and it is known, legally, as a corporation. Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Horcones

Maybe I'm reading too much into it all and I'll be face palming by the time the next episode airs.

BTW, I heard we will be getting 4 more episodes, not 2 more. But don't quote me on that!

Also, the fact that Ha Jin Woo missed one of behavioural psychology's most prominent figure's work makes me question how he got that PhD tbh. He must have used his lie detector skills something, because his memory seems to be his one weakness XD

Interesting research. thank you!!

What exactly didn't you get about microexpressions? Yes the idea is that we all have them but we're not able to control them. That's why someone like CWJ can have a "tell"--something that let's him know how people act when they're telling the truth and when they're lying. What makes KDY incredible is that he can control his microexpressions and therefore it throws CWJ off because there's nothing for him to base truth vs lies off of.

CWJ did know about Skinner. That's why it sounded familiar when someone said it. He didn't look it up. It's just he hadn't thought to connect Skinner to KDY until he found out KDY could control his microexpressions. and found out about his questionable past.

I'm so lucky I discovered this drama just a few days ago so I didn't have to wait between episodes cause, considering how crazy this wait for the final 2 eps is making me, I wouldn't have survived  :horror:

A question cause I'm lazy to go look around for the answer: on which days do the final 2 episodes air? and how much does it take for them to be subbed?

The drama comes Mondays and Tuesdays so episode 11 already aired today.

Fortunately, the drama has a dedicated subbing team so last week's episodes were

subbed really fast. I think subs for ep 9 were out like Tuesday or Wednesday and they were

definitely both up by Thursday.

why are we spoiliering? And yes I did. I had a bit of a hissy fit. You?

because I was going to respond with something that could spoil the last ep for people so they enter the conversation at their own risk.

Anyway, were you playing with the person you just responded to because Sung Joon isn't dead in ep 12?

i didn't understand a lot of the last episode (my Korean is still basic) but from what I gather it wasn't bad. I think they purposely left it like that because the producers are trying to shoot for a season 2. There are rumors that they bought the rights just in case they are allowed by tvN to do a second season. I hope so because otherwise I would be angry. It's a loose end.

OMG. I saw the episode, but I literally got angry halfway through, so I must have missed him. You have just made my day. No. Actually my week. It's a miracle omg, thank heavens.

I was just mad at the open ending and how that doesn't really solve anything. That and Da Jung x Woo Jin was just left kinda meh. Plus his terrible hair *shudders*. The story itself was okay.

I actually can't thank you enough muahahahah

lol I'm glad then! I wasn't sure if you were serious or kidding and you even had me doubting so I went back to check the scene. It's toward the end when Ha Woo-Jin wakes up and he's walking around the hospital. He sees Sung Joon and walks toward him.

I agree about the romantic pairing. They were just left up in the air even though there was a small scene at the end that made it seem like they'd be together or at least keep in touch. Then all of a sudden you realize they've lived their lives separately (depending on how much time has passed). I really hope the producers' plans to have a second season come true. If not, that would be a terrible ending for an otherwise great drama (in my opinion).

I hope they introduce the girl who become adopted in place of dayoung. It would be a crazy turn of event.

Why am I watching this show when I have exams tmr

I thought that was Da Jung? The guy that came and picked her up looked a lot like Da Jung's dad
