In the manga/anime, the walls were built by the humans to protect their last stronghold when they were brought to the edge of extinction at the hand of the Titans. Wall Maria is the outermost wall, followed by Wall Rose and Wall Sina. On a separate note, the three Walls in the manga/anime take reference from the Norse Mythology.
