Need Some Advice About Cheating on Tests

So I'm in highschool right now, taking a class that most people are failing. There's this guy (fake name= Bob) in our class that's really good at the subject, so he's getting pretty much straight A's.

Another guy (fake name= Matt) sits next to Bob, and blatantly cheats off of him. The way our class seating is arranged is half of the desks on one side, half on the other, and facing each other. Matt cheats so obviously that the ENTIRE half of the room across from him (including me) has seen him.

This isn't a one time thing, I've looked up and seen him doing that thing where he covers a side of his face with his hand and peeks out of the corner of his eyes multiple times. Our tests are multiple choice too, so it's even easier to cheat.

I made eye contact with him multiple times to try and get him to stop, but the minute he thinks I'm not looking, he goes back to cheating.

At this point, it is really bothering me, because he is getting good grades unfairly compared to the rest of us that are actually trying and working hard. I'm not sure whether I should just ignore it, confront him, or tell the teacher. I really would like to confront him, and I know I'll have pretty much the support of the entire class, since they're my friends and #EVERYBODY KNOWS, but I'm kind of a timid person when it comes to things like that, and I really would like to avoid drama if possible. What should I do about this, it's really bothering me. I'm a person that really values morals in life, and seeing this kind of thing pisses me off so much.

Is it possible to slip a note anonymously to the teacher about what is going on? Or even e-mail them requesting that you not be identified so that they can at least watch for this kid not to do it again? If you don't want to confront this guy alone, then maybe you can ask other people as well to come with you?

I think you should talk about it in some shape or form. You're right, it's unfair to everyone else.

Well, it's what he chose to do. If he wants to continue as a parasite cheating off some other kid, he's the one who will never learn or give an ounce of effort. In my classes, everyone copies off each other. It's called "teamwork". Whoever tells a teacher is seen as ignorant and downright annoying. As long as you keep working hard and doing what you think is morally correct, what he does with his tests shouldn't be of importance. Either way, not everyone thinks the same way, so do as you wish.

Wow I never even thought of the anonymous note thing, I think that will be the best way for me to go. I just want the teacher to know without directly implicating myself and getting involved in a bunch of drama that will probably end up ruining my year.

Please tell your teacher privately. I spent 6 years of my life watching a pretentious kid ace all of his history and english tests with notes under his desk. Every kid knew, but let him be. He walked away with an //award// for highest history average and got admitted to MIT. I kick myself every time I think about it.

So...the smart kid knows this other guy is cheating but lets him? Or does he not realize? I would cover up my answers.

Anyways, tell the teacher in a discreet manner and tell her you want to keep it anonymous. I'd like to think I keep an eye out on all my kids so that they don't cheat, but sometimes I can't keep constant watch. As a teacher, I'd appreciate someone telling me about a situation like this.

Good luck with this situation and with the class. :)

Maybe you should talk about the situation with the student that is copied off... Because an anonymous note might be seen as him being the snitch and in that case might cause some problem for him (though I dont know how is your school, but in some somebody would get hurt over this matter). Nobody likes snitches, but well, you could ask for a seating change so you can sit beside the brillant student and the cheater would not be able to cheat anymore.

I will choose 1 from these 2 options:

1- talk to Bob first and go with him to tell the teacher, request the teacher to hide your and Bob's identities.

2- bring one or two of your friends who know what happened, inform Bob and tell the teacher, ask the teacher to keep it confidential.

Bob must knows that Matt cheats.  Maybe they have an agreement of some sort.  Obviously Matt has been cheating because he knows he can get away with it.  If his cheating affects the class (grade) average I can see why it is a concern.  If at least half of the class knows that Matt cheats, and if it bothers them, why don't they speak up?  They may support you telling the teacher but is it because Matt cheats or that you're the one to point it out?  If Matt is weighing the class down, everyone who knows he cheats and do not like the idea should tell the teacher as a group, not just you.  Why only you have to take the fall?

In life there are people who work hard and people who cheat.  It's not fair for the people who work hard, but life is not always fair.

Exactly. If you cheat your way through school you will learn it the hard way later on.. imo just let him be and focus on your own thing.
