Why would you study psychology when you can start working at McDonald's today? It'll save you 4 years and countless student loans.

Mom is paying for university. I ain't worried about student loans.

me~ but im a first year, so I can't really tell you anything except that psych is a really interesting subject to study :rlytearpls:

I fell in love with Psychology when I was in high school. It was very interesting. The human brain is fascinating.

Also, I notice you're in Canada, that should help. Still doesn't change the fact a psych degree is pretty worthless.

I'm not majoring in it but I do study it as a subject (foreign system ok nvm me) so I can tell you it's very interesting. A classmate of mine used to go to University for psychology but she quitted after 2 yrs because it wasn't really getting to the point of really helping people. Of course I don't know how it would be in the US or Canada, but as for my guess I would say Psychology focuses a lot on the biology of the brains too and that is complete shit. (even I study this but university majors get many many more details)

I'm just throwing out my experiences and please note I'm from the Netherlands so it might just be completely different for you :)

I'm planning on getting a Ph.D. too though. My goal is to become a Psychologist :)

You kinda have to understand the brain in order to be able to help people, though. Maybe she/he would like Sociology/Social Work better? Thanks for the input ^_^

I'm majoring in Social work that's why ^_^

What I'm trying to say is that's it's VERY detailed. For example, 'this is the area for speech' , 'this cortex supports this one' etc. and I really hate those parts personally. I do understand it's a part of helping people but it depends on how you want to help people too. Social workers really can't do shit with saying 'this area is where speech develops'

I'm getting a great deal of biology and my classmate said it's a whole shit more in university so I'm just informing on that point :)

(because it could be shocking when people really don't like biology you know :imstupid: )

Oh and as for you're suggestion: yes that's why she's into social work now

Psych = hello joblessness.

You know how you wanted to help people with that psych degree. Yeah, you can forget about that.  :donthinkso:

JK, or am I?  :troll:

Have you never heard of Psychologists? :o Where I'm from there was one at my school and one at my hospital.

There are definitely jobs out there.

I'm interested in that stuff (already learned about it actually) so it should be good ^^

Social work does seem very interesting too! And it's definitely still on the table for me.

I'm pulling your leg a little but yeah, psych is a pretty bleak field. On the level of philosophy. Interesting to study but I regret to give you the reality of it. Most of you will not end up in that field. I'm assuming your counselors and advisers have already told you this though as they harped on that constantly.

Okay, here's what you need to know: psychology is only worth it if you go all the way to a PhD. You have to enter the program with the specific goal of getting that PhD. Anything under that is worthless and you will have wasted your time.

Getting a PhD means getting straight A's for all your classes and fighting with all the other students for a spot in the program. There are usually around 150 students per class, and professors assign lots of team projects to reduce the number of papers to grade. However, the problem is that most of the students choose psychology because they don't really know what they want to do later in life and psychology seems like an easy program. That means that you'll be stuck carrying 2-3 dead weights, double checking everything they do because they can easily fuck up your grades for you.

If that wasn't hard enough, you also have to get yourself known in the department. That means not only doing a shitload of networking, but trying to find a job in a lab to get something research-related on your resume. You have to stay after class to talk to every teacher, get to know them, what they're working on. You have to make sure they remember you after the semester ends, so that means showing up at their office hours to talk to them about the class, ask intelligent questions (which means actually studying ahead. Dumb questions will label you as an idiot and cause you to be dismissed immediately. Remember, you're fighting with others students). You also have to show up at the department's get-together. At my university, it was usually thursdays from 5 to 7. It fucking sucks. You're practically pushing other students out of the way so you can talk to a professor and prove to him/her that you're not going to be a completely useless dumbass in their lab.

Psychology is a fuckin nightmare, trust me. It's not like med school where once you're accepted, you're pretty much safe as long as you don't fail your classes. Psychology means you are going to be spending 3-4 years of your life trying to prove that you're not completely useless to professors who have much better things to do than listen to you. It's stressful, gruelling and demoralizing.

And while you're doing all that, you're gonna have to watch your friends have fun because they're guaranteed a job with a bachelor's.

Here's my advice as someone who went through all that: choose a field that's either in high demand like computer sciences or choose a field that is so obscure and unpopular that professors are begging for more students.

My mom studied 2 years of Psychology but she stopped because it was too time consuming and frustating.  She said that it was literally taking over her life in a bad way, she couldn't even endure a few more years.  But to each its own :)  I hope you enjoy it and make the best out of it.  I'm going to college to be a Veterinary Technician ^_^
