Asian Kung-Fu Generation (アジアン・カンフー・ジェãƒãƒ¬ãƒ¼ã‚·ãƒ§ãƒ³ Ajian KanfÅ« JenerÄ“shon), typeset as ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, is a Japanese alternative rock band formed in Yokohama, Japan, in 1996. For nearly its entire career, the band has consisted of vocalist Masafumi GotÅ, guitarist Kensuke Kita, bassist Takahiro Yamada, and drummer Kiyoshi Ijichi. The band's musical style is influenced by seminal Western punk and alternative rock acts in conjunction with their own local Japanese indie rock background. As a result, their songs maintain a balance of various aspects of the genres, most typically expressing fast-paced tempos and prominent, hard-edged guitar riffs as well as rhythmic flow and emotional lyrics. Despite the indie nature of their music, the band has enjoyed worldwide commercial success in addition to critical acclaim.

So I noticed there wasn't any thread for this amazing band on here. They might not be very relevant today even though they're still making music, but in my own humble opinion, these guys deserve to be called one of the best. Most of you might remember them for making music to Naruto or Full Metal Alchemist. Anyway if you want to discuss this band feel free to do it here,

I don't know too much about them and would love to learn more myself.

Ever heard Shinseiki no Love Song?

Yeah, I've heard the song. Got the old MV somewhere om my HDD. Not seen that video though. I think I enjoy their calmer songs the best. Like Solanin, Blue Train etc.

Why hello there~ Thanks for opening up the thread! I heard "Haruka Kanata" through Naruto and I've been hooked ever since.

AKFG Fragments is an international fansite that's got lot of good stuff on it, especially translated lyrics (Japanese - English). AKG's entire disco has been translated iirc.  AKFGFan has PVs and more for download.

AKG had a European tour not too long ago that was oustanding. So proud of them~ Sold out in London and Paris and had a great turnout in Cologne. Here are some fan reports of each venue.

Yep! :chu: I was studying for my finals, and the day I decided to return H8 died. That would happen to me.   I searched on Tumblr and Twitter and read the news. I only planned to lurk here but I had a change of heart.

It was great from what I read!! My mind is still blown from the turnout, especially after so many years.

Solanin! I'm the only person who hates it. Objectively it's a great song (good instrumentation, beautiful lyrics, etc.) but I just can't listen to it.

I'm on and off myself. I missed out on some good stuff before so I'm trying to pay a little more attention this time around. Now I usually listen when I need some energy for something

AKG covered "Loser" by Beck awhile back.

I was really surprised when I first watched. Fantastic cover!

Why can't you listen to it? I'm curious or that's it? You just can't? lol

Well... they do have a huge discography. I haven't listened to everything myself.

Wow, that's an awesome cover.  :ahmagah:

At first I thought it was a cover from the anime/movie Beck but it's the band.

Ohh, really? Blasphemy!!

I'd almost say it's their best song. Have you seen the movie? That gives the song abit more emotional impact, at least for me. :)

I don't really have a rational reason for hating the song. But I do know I can't stand to hear it. I feel so evil but it's honest

LOLOLOL! I remember it now that you mention it!!

I agree! I wonder if they have any more covers. I only know of "Loser"

I can't breathe!! (Almost) AKG's best song?!   I'll give a pass for "best" after their style change, but not for AKG's entire disco. Just no way.

No, I haven't! I've gotta get around to doing that.

You might enjoy AKG's newest stuff (Magic Disk - present). The tracks are more "mellow" than before and the vocals aren't as grating. I know the vocals on the "rockier"/earlier stuff is hard to listen to (at least for me). I stand by Magic Disk even though it isn't a fan favorite. There's a lot of variety with the individual tracks but at the same time it all works together to form a cohesive album. I also like the instrumentation that was used - a big risk on AKG's part (trumpets and other instruments I don't know the name of).

You can never have enough of Night Diving :har:

No rational reason? I can live with that. I also have some songs that I can't listen to no matter how hard I try.

Haha. Night Diving is really your favorite eh?

I remember jamming to this song before.

It just have that tune that is easy to like... at least, imo.

I enjoy their newer stuff, but generally I would agree their older stuff is better, as with many other groups. Solanin, despite being "newer", I'd say is their best calmer/mellow type song. Which is why I'd call it "one of their best".

The melody is very powerful, "larger than life-esque" and I really like it. I really like the lyrics too, and it get's a free emotional boost when you've seen the movie and kinda remembers it every time the song plays. The song just has that AKG raw feel I love despite being a little more "polished" than other songs.

But hey, it's great when fans of a band disagree on their best work. That (hopefully) means they've made alot of good stuff. :)

Oh absolutely, without a doubt! Most of my favorites come from their older material and the songs that fit more into the alternative rock genre (Kona Yuki, Denpatou, Loop & Loop, Hase Suns, etc.). Objectively speaking, I find that the most challenging music scores are in the earlier days too. I still disagree with Solanin at the top of the mellow song list (I still can't put my feelings aside ), but I'd be nuts to not put it close to the top.

I watched Solanin this weekend! I enjoyed it. I've softened up a bit with regard to the song~ I agree - disagreement is good in this case.

On a side note, I hold Magic Disk to such high esteem because the execution was excellent and the sound was still AKG despite being different than before. (I have the tendency now to group the music separately (before and after style change, hence the "old" and "new".) I don't expect to hear another Rewrite or another Sol-fa but newer songs can be just as good or even better. The problem I have right now is that AKG has taken a hit regarding difficulty and musical innovation (I'm looking at you Landmark -_-). That's a consequence almost every band/musical act faces at some point but AKG has a good track record. What they have now is good but I'm here for great like before.

They are! :)

They recently released a single for Naruto's soundtrack and Gotch released new solo songs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIMoqCi9tek

The songs are just okay for me, I still love them though

Oh sweet! I just haven't caught up with them ever since I've been away from high school
