sgtninjago 2,190
Yeah forgot about that part. Its ridic that they had to do so much advertising for Tomb Raider, when the name itself is enough to sell
jdkero 229
Lol Square Enix. Ah well they're announcing a new Final Fantasy title at E3 aren't they. I wonder what that will do for them, seeing as how damaged the name is now
Hemlock 1,537
was it actually because they spent so much on advertising though? I've read/listened to a lot of talk about how games are so expensive to make now. i haven't played TR but it looks like a lot of money was put into it and it was going for AAA level production value. Maybe they advertised it so heavily because it took so much money to make and they knew they had to sell a lot to make a decent profit.
Stevie Wonder's Anus 73
Advertising was one of the main reasons. From a business prospective they should have been realistic and not have made advertising and budget cost that much.... expectations of making 5 mil in 1 month of a tomb raider game in 2013 is insane. They should have found the balance between big budget/high production and advertisement like many companies do. I would bet that if they took the $ made on the un-wanted multiplayer out then they would have been happier with the sales Look at Bioshock Infinite, a Huge budget game....that sold about the same as tomb raider and hitman and made take 2 a profit that they are very happy with.... Of course BI was advertised even more so than tomb raider I think. Quote I just found from square enix "we were also hit by additional costs in dealing with distribution channels, such as price protection and rebates, which placed huge pressure on our profit and loss." Mako Yagami 4,462
SE has screwed themselves over because they can't make games anymore. FF13 may have sold decently but fan feedback was mostly negative. All their other games have failed, and so they have resorted to publishing games in the meantime. Time will tell if SE can get their heads outta the water because they are sitting on some major IP's that have been in the back burner and people would love to play. The chrono series comes to mind, I would love another chrono game.

I agree with what you said about the chrono series, I was actually thinking about buying Chrono Trigger on DS recently actually. I may not like Kingdom Hearts myself but I know it has a lot of dedicated fans, they should of pushed for KH3 instead of FF13-2 & Lightning Returns ugh. There's 7, Crisis Core, Dirge, Advent Children, rerelease of Advent Children later adding the Denzel story and renaming it Advent Children Complete, and rereleasing 7 on pc with small updates/tweaks (this was somewhat recent i think). Mako Yagami 4,462
Versus was announced when I was in middle school, I'm now in college and that shit still hasn't come out. Who the hell takes 7 years to make a game? I would love a KH3, but that hasn't happened despite massive fan plea.
Hemlock 1,537
fan pleas does nothing to effect video game development. Because fan pleas don't code or do actual work or provide money (well there's kickstarter now). Doesn't matter how much you want a game it'll get done when it gets done or be canceled completely. Even the whole Operation Rainfall thing would have all been for nothing if Gamestop didn't come in and got a deal. And i highly doubt the other 2 games would have come over if Xenoblade didn't first, though possible i guess since it was XSEED for those two. There's plenty of other games that people beg for and they will never happen. I want XSEED to localize the rest of the Trails in the Sky trilogy but it probably won't happen.
Midnight 643
Agreed, They should have just made a KH3 instead of 13-2 and Lightning Returns. Or like a PS3 Dissidia or something. I liked Dissidia.
Stevie Wonder's Anus 73
Depends on the company and game. Fromsoft put Dark Souls on PC due to the petition. Also look at earth bound on Wii U virtual console..People thought that game was never gonna come...But due to fan reaction we will get it. The thing about sqaure is they announce a game but almost a decade later its still not here... similar to Diablo 3... Especially sequels to their most beloved games that would have guaranteed good sales...they should have struck while the iron was hot with KH3... You have a point but at the same time Nintendo has been dropping the ball for years now. The Wii-U is slightly more powerful than the current 7 yr old consoles, but slightly more powerful isn't gonna cut it this time around. The Wii motion control giimick has come and gone, people are no longer impressed by it. The Wii-U Pad is a pretty nifty controller but with no games, no real third party support, and sub-par horsepower, the Wii-U will no doubt end up selling as much as the GCN. I hope Nintendo get's smart and decides to release a more powerful version of it's console a year or two from now otherwise serious developers won't even bother developing for it. At the very least it could survive if Nintendo put more effort into garnering third party support because it can only do so much with it's own games. It can run all the major next gen engines, the lack of both 1st and 3rd party support is the problem. Once Nintendo gets its big 1st party titles starting around the end of the year things will pick up as with going onto next year and if they can get some really good 3rd party support then things will really pick up even more. Also if they can market it better...Apparently they are gonna do something similar to a re-launch The GC/xbox was much more powerful than the PS2.......The Wii was Extremely weaker than the PS3/360...The PSVITA/PSP more powerful than DS/3DS The different between Wii U and PS4/720 won't be that much of a difference...we are in diminishing returns and graphics never really shifted sales that much in the first place..those that get rock hard to graphics will just get a PC these days. Mako Yagami 4,462
Indeed, gfx are not a reason to buy a console. But if you have been keeping up with the gaming world you'll know various developers have turned down working on the Wii-U simply because it's a weak system. I predict Nintendo could do what they did with the 3DS and turn things around but they would need a solid lineup of games first so that'll have to wait. Stevie Wonder's Anus 73
They have also been saying that the PS3 is too weak And complaining about next gen not coming sooner for a while now but look at games like last of us and all the graphically great looking games that it has been putting out..and the wii u can run games like watch dogs and X. I think its mostly because of how different it is to work on.. Sony is smart for making the PS4 easy to make games for. I mean if they don't have a prob still making 360 games Then why not for Wii U which is stronger lol...Because it isn't gonna make as much money with its small install base and isn't easy to work on. JimmyTutron 2,096
lol they haven't been turning down the Wii U because it's weak, it's just an excuse to not port games. The real problem is lack of install base. When sales pick up third parties will jump on. And Nintendo is already lining up for a re-launch with a bunch of Wii U games coming this second half of the year, probably building up to the holidays. I am afraid for my wallet tbh. Stevie Wonder's Anus 73
Yep. EA was making games for wii Even in 2010 but they are gonna complain about the wii u being too weak? Lol and can't run Frost bite 3 but mobile phones can? and Crytek3 was running just fine of wii u but not frostbite 3 engine? lol. U don't see them complaining about phones being weak cause they'll cash in with mobile games no matter how bad it will have to look.
sgtninjago 2,190
Don't know if graphics were always the issue. Granted porting games can always have mixed results. Sometimes it can be on par at least, some just ended up worst. In the end its the developers issue for not trying to adjust to each console's specs. The only issue I really saw with the Wii was how it was marketed it. Most people who bought the system were lured in by the motion control, and most only played with w/e game that was packed in, which was Wii sports. And knowing those type of people, they probably weren't in it to buy games. So if Nintendo just change its marketing, it can stand a good chance for the next gen. But remains to be seen right now. Currently I'm smh head with their latest move of putting force ads on anything Nintendo related on youtube including "lets plays".
