The Official Lee Sungmin Thread ~

I'd still spam a married man.

...was that ever a question round these parts?

As for enlistment, I agree that Sungmin has a plan. He's a perfectionist. Public service is most likely for him, based on his anemia and previously auditioning for the police promotional unit.

From a certain point of view, it makes sense to get married first and then enlist, since that way they can live together openly and not risk getting caught in a scandal, and netizens will have two years to get over it. It's been pointed out several times that he'll  get hate no matter what. Why not go for broke be happy? And she clearly makes him happy.

i heard about that. i hope that helps to dispel the rumors that she was knocked up, unless she's just doing a fantastic job of not showing her 5-6 month pregnancy.

She's filming a drama right now, too. The wardrobe department deserves a raise if they're hiding a baby bump on a 5'3ish girl. That's wizardry right there.

I have a lot of feelings right now. Putting the essay behind a spoiler, and I'm only sharing this here because it's Ming's thread.

The worst of it is all the nerves and apprehension I had originally was towards outsiders. Netizens giving him shit about enlistment, etc. I never thought we'd be facing an internal crisis. It doesn't matter how small the faction of angry K-ELF are, they're still there, they were close to the boys, and they're hurting them. All of them. And it makes me feel ashamed. I wish I could still feel embarrassed, but it's beyond that now.

They're making things like gifts, signatures, and blog posts out to be these major crimes, and I just cannot fathom how they can feel justified. Not after what happened to Leeteuk's family, after the Sewol, after Ladies' Code, after Kim Hyun-joong's abuse came to light... Do they not understand what real suffering, what real pain is? Do they not see why Sungmin might want to fight so hard for his own happiness?

I'd be more inclined to feel for them if they weren't being so hypocritical. Yes, the nickname in the signature was inconsiderate. But what do you call leaking his address? They claim he hates K-fans, and yet what do they call international fans? They claim Sungmin is jeopardizing the GDA, which Leeteuk already said wasn't the goal, and now they're the ones saying they won't buy albums--and oh, never mind that the majority of the buying power is all cockroaches. The timing of his wedding isn't right, because he's enlisting and so are 3/4 others. Maybe he wants to have as many members at his wedding as possible. How is that wrong? And won't we be in the same situation, two years from now--SJ trying to promote with as many members as they can, while they can?

The part that really bothers me is the fact that they berate him for not being secret enough, yet they had the gall to post loaded statements on his blog, and to ask him point blank at a fan sign about the rumors. Anyone can read posts on the internet. Fan signs aren't cozy fireside chats. There were press, staff, managers, other fans, and perfect strangers there. They asked that in front of Zhou Mi. How is that justified? How is that at all in keeping with their supposed desire that he keep it all a secret? And he didn't deny it. He said I'm waiting. He had a plan. But the plan got ruined.

The longer this goes on, the less convinced I am that this is really about Sungmin's "attitude" at all. Yes, some of the fansite admins are hurt, but the rumors seem to suggest that this isn't his fans leading the charge. And this is where the shame comes in. I don't know if I'm more ashamed of thinking that K-ELF might be using this as a chance to power play the rest of SJ, to make an example of Sungmin as to what happens if they ever dare try to go public or get engaged--or that I wouldn't put it past them. That after years of Only13 bullshit, after seeing them rip into Sungmin, seeing them hurt all of Super Junior like this, that I don't doubt that they would be so twisted as to try and keep SJ single forever. They say this isn't about Sungmin's marriage. Well, I believe that. This is about whether or not they'll "support" any member of Super Junior getting married, period. I think we know the answer to that.

And all of them deserve SO much more. They have a whole world of fans that love them, that would never do this to them, and once again, they're stuck with Korea, who doesn't appreciate them, doesn't take them seriously, and is filled with former ELF that have moved on to fresher meat and now these backstabbing harpies. How, in any way, shape, or form, is this fair to Super Junior, who have always given their all for us? Why can one small fraction of ELF outweigh the unconditional love that the rest of us has for them? If the world betrayed SJ, ELF is supposed to betray the world. But what are we supposed to do when ELF betray SJ?

What gets me, what is tearing me apart, is that this is happening to SUNGMIN. My God. If ever there was a person who deserved so much more than they've received, it's Sungmin. He's their best all-around performer. He is the emotionally strongest member. He has the best stamina. He carries the chorus of every title track. His voice is amazing. He's never caused one breath of scandal and has always been there to perform, with complete dedication. He is the goddamn backbone of Super Junior and the boys know it.

And what is bringing the group down from the inside? Something that even netizens are celebrating. It's not a scandal. It's a marriage.

A marriage. Only in Korea is an idol getting married considered some sort of betrayal, but an actor can abuse a woman and get off with a fine. And I'm not sure I can stomach that right now.

Sungmin will be fine. I have no doubt about that. He has the support he needs from those closest to him. He's found a woman he loves, and he feels is the one. They'll get married, he'll enlist, and by the time he's discharged, this will be water under the bridge.

He's a very good, and highly respected, musical actor and nothing that is going on right now will change that. This nonsense with K-ELF isn't damaging his career or reputation. Netizens don't care, other fandoms don't care, and to be honest, this is exactly the kind of behavior that people expect from idol fangirls. ELF are merely living up to the bottom of the barrel expectations that Korea has of K-pop fans in general.

ELF are still here. We will still support Super Junior, and Sungmin, no matter what. If this ultimately means that SJ tours more and promotes in Korea less, fine. They'll be showered with love, still make money, and continue being the Hallyu Kings. South Korea can continue to miss out on their brilliance.

Remember, that nothing that is happening or will happen changes who they are, or what they've meant to us. Especially Sungmin.

I really loved both the fanboy and super intelligent girl that they featured for Sungmin, and think both would have been an interesting fit with his personality. His fanboy will totally win him over, though. The guy's too sweet not to get along with.

And I want to see them dance Ice Cream together. If the Variety gods have any sense of justice, that makes it on film.

This is from Ming's first musical, Akilla, in 2009. I'd love to hear him perform it now, given how much more control and experience he has--not that the original isn't impressive.

My dream musical casting for him will always be Roger from Rent. Not sure if South Korea would ever go for a musical about the AIDS epidemic in NYC, not to mention the varied sexual identities of the main characters, but I still think Sungmin would kill this part.

(And Wookie would make a fantastic Mark.)

This ost has to be my all time favorite Sungmin solo video on YT. I was speechless when I heard it for the 1st time.

I just noticed I left a comment on it 2 years ago LOL

I agree with you. Sungmin and Ryeowook will make a perfect actor for this role. In all honesty I believe Sungmin and Ryeowook are the BEST  actors in SJ and in SM (Talking about their idol actors) .It's depressing how sm neglects these two members. So much talents and potential are being wasted~ *Sigh*

Your taste is A+.  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:

Wookie has natural timing, which is impossible to teach. Given slightly sarcastic or comedic roles, he shines--but he also can channel a lot of emotion.  The problem is that his voice and build don't readily lend themselves to leading man roles. He has to be the right fit for things to really click. That's why he was so well received in Goddess Is Watching--he was the perfect fit for the part. If he stays choosy about projects and aims more for character roles, he really could have an amazing acting career in both stage and television.

Sungmin is by far the most versatile actor in SJ, and as you say, perhaps all of SM. He disappears into the role and breathes life into it. His Daniel is very different from his D'Artagnan (and Kyu's, too, for that matter), or Dracula, etc. He also has that rare ability to clearly transmit emotion and have it register with the audience. And his voice... *sighs* He can transform his voice to match different genres in a way that might just be unmatched.

(I love Kyuhyun, but his biggest fault as an actor is that you can see him thinking rather than living in the moment. I lift here, turn here, etc. His voice makes up for a lot of things, but I'd like to see him relax into a role and really own it. All of his characters to date can be described as charming but sarcastic, with a dash of romance. Taking a supporting role in The Days was a good decision, since you're usually more free to play with the side characters, and it will hopefully push him out of his comfort zone.)

But seriously, picture Ryeowook and Sungmin doing this number and tell me it wouldn't be amazeballs. Mark (Wook) is the guy in maroon and blue with the scarf, Roger (Ming) is in the green shirt and plaid pants. (Skip to 2:36 for the good stuff.)
