How do you tell if a charity is legit?

Like how do you know what's a good charity and what's not. Are there any sites that are good for this?

I went out to Walmart one day about a month ago and they asked at the cash register if I wanted to donate to some charity (don't even remember what it was for.) I had just gotten a paycheck so I donated more than I should have (like really too much) when I didn't know much about the charity. My Mom told me it was a really stupid move. It has been bugging me since. Thoughts like, "How much of it is really going to charity and how much is going in the founder's pockets," keep flooding my mind.

For future reference I'd love to know of some sites that tell what charities are good and which ones not so much

Hábitat for Humanity it's a really good cause, it's endorsed by Jimmy Carter whom I respect so you can put your coin in there, and you can check in the page the work they do around the world building houses for those who are less fortunate http://www.habitat.org/

The Chronicle of Philantropy might be worth checking out http://philanthropy.com/section/Home/172

they have listed Walmart as one of the top charitable corporations, at least some of your donation is probably going where it was intended to go..

but it's best to donate directly to a charity, in my opinion

I do the same, I would donate a dollar or two when they ask me in the super market/store. I don't mind giving up that much, even if I'm sure only a certain percent will be given to the actual charity. Anything count..

If you really want to donate to a charity, I suggest to donate to something that is dear to your heart. Research about the organization and  then directly donate to them.

theres websites that rate charities

i never donate when strangers ask

theres no way of knowing where your money goes

i pay taxes and help my deadbeat brother, that is charity enough

the only charity i would donate to is planned parenthood

i see actually see them do shit in my community

A good rule of thumb is checking out if they spend 30% or less on administration.

I usually prefer local charities that were certified by guidestar, charitynavigator, and the state government. Local charities (at least where I lived) had more transparency and it was easier to communicate with those involved.

Personally, I don't like shelling out money as a form of donation only because anyone can do anything with el dinero, especially with cash. The only times I've ever written checks were for fundraisers or charity banquets among people I trusted. Of course, it's a lot easier to drop a few bucks on something rather than going out of your way to collect canned food, so I hope these sites can help. I used them a lot when managing a community service group as a teenager.
