Have you ever had trouble in a school subject? If so how did you overcome it?

I really struggle in math. I'm currently in Algebra 1 in college and it's my second time taking the class. I failed the first time and am already failing the second time. I'm nervous because you can only fail a class 3 times before they ban you from taking that class in the district. I'm already set up with a tutor once a week, but I can't retain the info for the life of me. I'm very worried because the uni I want to get into won't even think of accepting you until you've at least passed algebra 2. I never even got past Algebra 1 in my highschool years either.

How do you guys pass classes that are difficult for you?

By the way if any of you know of any good math websites please let me know.. I really need it haha

English. I had to pass level 3 English to get enough credits for uni and I failed the assessment at least 10 times. Idk why I fail so much at English. I can write scientific reports and my lecturer said my writing English is in very academic style on these reports. But anything that doesn't have a rigid/set way to writing them, fuck it I can't do it.

I overcame it by choosing a science based field as a degree lol.

First, are you understanding the theories and how to apply them? If not, you need to do that first. Work together with your tutor to understand all the theories well. After that, practice, practice, practice.

Try to study smart by figuring out what types of questions are more likely to be on the tests & exams and then focus on those more. Since you have already taken the course before, you should have a very good idea already.

KhanAcademy! They have a very comprehensive collection of videos for Algebra I. I hope it helps. The site was a dream for me and orgo. I spend copious amounts of time reading the chapter before class, always writing down questions so I can keep track of what confuses me and help organize my thoughts in order to reach a complete understanding. Subjects like math are all about practice.

Do you have to take the subject? If its not working out, maybe you're just not a maths person?

Anyway, my advice for doing well in any subject is just to keep up. If you can keep up and understand everything as the semester passes, you will be fine.

If its a problem with retaining info, maybe you aren't actually understanding the concepts that are being taught to you?

You need to identify what the problem is. Is it that you can't focus when you need to? Or is it that you aren't being taught information in a way you can understand and apply it?

Khan Academy is a great resource so I recommend that. Once you get the grasp of basic algebra, more difficult algebra is generally a lot easier to pick up. So I suggest maybe going back to the basics and making sure you have a good grasp of the basic stuff.

I've never had a lot of troubles in school subjects simply because my parents sent me tutoring since I was 7 LOL. But for Maths, I've always found tutoring to be incredibly helpful because it forces me to do more practice. In Maths, the key is firstly to understand and then to do a ton of practice.

I agree with harehare. Are you truly passionate about mathematics, and is that what you personally really want to study?

If you don't like it that much AND it's causing you this much trouble, then I really recommend finding something else that you will enjoy, and have an easier time with. Not everybody is made to excel at certain subjects, just as how you can't expect a fish to climb a tree the same way a monkey does.

Back in high school, we had to take certain mandatory courses. There's no choice but to put up with it back then. But in college, there are so many other fields of study. I might be wrong, but I don't think you have a problem with approaching "a subject" in general; I think the problem is, you aren't with your best fit.
