The furor started after the re-publication of an article a few weeks back titled ‘Why do so many people wish to blacken Stephen Chow’, written by a self-professed Stephen Chow fan. Several allegations were made in the article against Hong Kong film boss Charles Heung, founder of China Star Entertainment Group and the man credited with establishing the careers of Chow Yun-fat, Jet Li, Andy Lau and Chow himself.

It was alleged that Heung had ties with the Hong Kong triads. The article also stated that Heung had threatened to make an enemy out of anybody who wanted to invest in Chow’s project “Shaolin Soccerâ€.

Angered by the allegations, Heung’s wife, Tiffany Chen has publicly raged at Chow in news interviews as well as on Weibo, bringing up various brickbats that had been thrown at him by fellow film directors Johnnie To and Wong Jing. She has also sought to refute age-old rumours about her husband which have now resurfaced, one of which involves Jackie Chan. The story goes that Chan had not been punctual for the late Anita Mui’s birthday celebration. An angry Heung allegedly reprimanded Chan and forced him to kneel for one hour to apologise to Mui.

Chen denied that this ever happened and claimed, “If not for his son’s matter, Jackie Chan would have already come forward to say that this never happenedâ€.

The very public feud has split the Hong Kong film industry with stars like Andy Lau, Nick Cheung and Lau Ching Wan publicly defending Heung against the allegations whilst others like Cheng Pei Pei, Anita Yuen and Karen Mok have defended Chow.

........

[+20,274] Uncle Chow’s works are genuinely good. His poor relations with people in the entertainment circles could be due to the environment he grew up in. His family was not rich and he grew up in a single family. Therefore he has a reclusive character, finds it difficult to express his feelings and is too earnest in the presence of benefits, which resulted in him not being welcomed in the entertainment circles.

[+19,977] You are the Hong Kong triads’ godfather’s madam, you want to blacken Stephen Chow’s name? Who will dare to oppose you?

[+16,892] If my strength was enough, how I hope to be able to protect you, to fend off all the rumours and slanders attacking you, to not permit you to be wronged one bit. When you were young, you made us laugh. Now that you are old, we want to make you laugh. When we were young, we cried and cried until we laughed when we watched your movies. Now that we are older, we watch your movies and laugh and laugh until we cry. Uncle Chow, we will accompany you into old age, we are your loyal fans. We don't have money, we don’t have schemes, we don’t vilify or slander others. What we like is you, if you have a new movie, we will definitely go and watch, although it is not easy to watch Uncle Chow’s movies anymore. If you can no longer tolerate all these people who are inconsiderately shouting at you, vent on weibo, and your fans will accompany you in doing that. Don’t suffer alone, your melancholy and sadness make our hearts hurt. You will always be a winner, because the people who like you, they all believe that you are an upright and good person. We have never seen you say a bad word about others. Even though we are separated by distance, our hearts will fly close to your side. Uncle Chow, your fans will always be around, we will never leave and we will never stop loving you.

[+15,713] Today, my knowledge has certainly grown. A triad boss who ordered the kidnapping of Carina Lau [1], forced Uncle Jackie to kneel, raped Yammie Lam[2] and committed every conceivable misdeed, has been described by the dregs of the Hong Kong film industry as a good person. There is really no limit to all you people’s lack of shame! Stephen Chow had never said a bad word about any of you, yet you all wilted under the tyrannical pressure exerted by Charles Heung’s family and have come out to blacken Chow’s name. You all really have no character! I will never watch any of your films again! Support Uncle Chow!

[+17,219] This is too funny. When he hit the big time, why did we not see you blacken his name, yet now you chirp like an insect. The classics that Stephen Chow has left us cannot be wiped away; do you have any? Andy Lau and the rest of them, they rely on your husband’s backstage support, is it that firm? Can Andy Lau and the rest still go around the entertainment circles if they offend your husband? All day you chirp like an insect on Weibo, has Stephen Chow even stepped out to address you? Stephen Chow’s works accompanied us as we grew up, did yours even?

[+ 13,304] Jackie Chan will obviously not admit to kneeling, otherwise what will happen to his status as an elder brother? However, if he admits to it, then he will be a true hero!

[+10,040] Following the 97 handover[3], Charles Heung has been cleansed of his sins. He really is intelligent, before 97 he really was the right hand man to the boss of Xin Yi An[4]. After 97, he cleansed himself because he understood that under the rule of the Communist Party, those who get involved with the triads would not have good fruit to eat. Now he is the boss of a hotel and a movie company. Macau’s Lan Kwai Fong Hotel is a joint venture between him and Stanley Ho. What he has now is money; he is followed by a security detail every time he leaves his house. That is why he no longer has dealings with the triads.

.....

T/N:

[1] Naked pictures of Carina Lau were published in the October 30, 2002, East Week magazine issue. The pictures were from 12 years before. Lau had been kidnapped by gangsters working for the triads and forced to pose for those pictures after she had refused to star in one of their movie productions. Following the publication of the photos, Lau said on an interview that she had forgiven her captors and refuted allegations that she had been sexually assaulted during the ordeal.

[2] Yammie Lam was a promising young actress whose career was cut short by severe mental illness. In 2013, a video was uploaded of her being interviewed at a restaurant which went viral. In it, she alleged that she had been raped by two Hong Kong entertainment industry "big brothers" 20 years ago. These events contributed to her mental breakdown.

[3] Refers to the 1997 handover of Hong Kong which was then under British rule to the China.

[4] A famous and extremely powerful Hong Kong triad.

The part that breaks my heart was about Yammie Nam (è—潔瑛). She has not been able to recover from the 'shame' and 'violation of body' she felt since that rape incident which did happen. But till today, even though Yammie Nam has gone on tape to name the perpetrator, no media dares to announce the name of the perpetrator...I think that could perhpas be because 1.it's been so long ago, there's been no evidence collected to convict without a doubt, hence more like hearsay now; 2. the perpetrator is so powerful, filthy rich and influential that no one, no media dares to offend. From a beautiful lady, she was one of the 'Five Beauties', and most beautiful of the five, who was highly promoted by TVB in those days. She is such a sorry sight now, wandering the streets in her mentally unstable state.

I also just want to add that Andy Lau and various other stars have stood out in support of Stephen Chow ( å‘¨æ˜Ÿé¦³ ), and to clarify what Mrs. Heung had 'alleged'. That was very nice and brave of those few who stood out. IMO, Stephen Chow is indeed a rare talent in what he does well - slapstick comedy. They are so outrageously ridiculous yet are crudely hilarious and very entertaining - one box office hit after another and another speak for itself. A talent so rate in HK/China entertainment circle.

Stephen Chow was and still my favorite actor/director, it sadden me reading this  :rlytearpls:

Anyway I knew that Hongkong movies industry heavily tied  with triad in the past (money laundering, hindered promising actor career that wasn't from their agency, forced actor/actress to work with them, etc). I believed no such thing happening now, I guess I was wrong
