Good news, new song on the 27th and I've only got 2 episodes left before I'm done with HBY.

Finally, I'm done. I just finished the last episode of Hot Blooded Youth. And now I can finally review it. Which means SPOILERS AHEAD. Also, I'm probably going to butcher the spelling on all of these names.

Spoiler

Well first things first, I enjoyed it much more than Negotiator, but I think I like Brightest Star in the Sky more. I'll explain.

I enjoyed most of the characters. Tao's character, Youquain, was good, but I also really liked his sister XiaoXiao and the female lead Hongyi. I also really liked Youquain and XiaoXiao's dad; I was sad when he died. I actually really liked Hongyi for being a strong and serious character who was calm and collected for the majority of the show in spite of most obstacles. It's only during her biggest crisis at the end where she breaks down, but the whole thing is believable, so I enjoyed her. I feel kinda the same for Youquain, only I think he should have hit his breaking point just a bit sooner than he did, but overall it was fine.

My biggest issue with HBY was the ridiculous amount of arcs within this whole plot. We started with this Casino games plot (which I actually thought would be the focus on the show, but nah, it lasted for like 4 episodes), then the 'framed for a crime and hiding out' arc which lasted 2 episodes, then the jail arc, then the cocaine arc, then the memory loss arc, and finally the 'Vs. Chengfeng and Qin Quillin' arc. The intro for the show changed so many times to reflect all of these damn arcs. I don't think this show needed so many arcs. I've already complained multiple times about C-dramas lasting for so long, but this was just ridiculous. 58 episodes?! Why?

Some the the arcs were just straight up pointless. I have no idea why they had Tao's character lose his memory and become a minister under a foreign church for like 10 episodes. The cocaine arc which happened after the jail arc served barely any purpose other than to strengthen Youquain and Hongyi's relationship (something else that bothered me), and it just came out of nowhere. Quian Baite was the main villain for every arc accept the last one, where Quin Quillin all of a sudden became the big bad. Why? Why did we spend the whole show trying to take down Baite, only for Quillin to be the final villain for the last 10 episodes. Also, Youquain's best friend Chengfeng turning against him and becoming a major villain felt really......weird.

Youquain and Hongyi's romance was another big thing that I didn't like. It just.....felt so unnecessary. For the entire show, their relationship was strictly platonic. Then all of a sudden when Tao is out of jail, these two are crushing on each other talking about wanting to get married......????????? Where did this attraction come from? They're interaction was very limited from the start, and whenever they spoke, it was all strictly business. There weren't even hints that these two had romantic interest in each other. I really don't see why they needed to force a romance in here. I actually enjoyed the drama more without it.

I wasn't a fan of the inconsistencies and underdeveloped character traits. Youquain's illiteracy was brought up a few times, but then there are instances where it seems he can read just fine. He read a script while trying to fit in to Hongyi's theater club, and he implied that he'd been reading the Bible in the memory loss arc. And this is probably just me nitpicking, but honestly, I don't see how in 60 episodes, Youquain being illiterate wasn't a major obstacle that stood in his way even once. We also learn in the first few episodes that Youquain can identity valuable antiques, but this trait is ignored for the majority of the show until the memory loss arc in the near final arc of the show.

I think the thing that saved this drama was the fact that, even though I thought there were to many arcs and that some of them felt pointless, at the very least, they didn't insert some random major problem that they randomly pulled out of their ass and shove it in the last two episodes for a rushed ending. The arcs were overly plentiful, but the pacing of everything was overall done well imo. In Negotiator and Brightest Star in the Sky, they introduced these random problems in the last 2-3 episodes with no buildup whatsoever, just for a half-assed ending in the former's case, an rushed, though decent ending in the latter's case. I'm glad that didn't happen here. Even though I think the ending could have been done a bit better, I didn't strongly dislike it.

Overall, it was better than Negotiator (of course, it's pretty hard to fall below that one), but not as good as Brightest Star in the Sky. If there were less arcs, I think HBY could have been my favorite of Tao's dramas, but for now my ranking is Brightest Star>HBY>>>Negotiator.
