IMO, the decent listenable music in HK are coming mainly from singer-songwriters..

at least this week, pong nan, ivana wong and robynn kendy's songs are the only HK songs I could sit through the entire thing...

To be fair, most of the decent music in hk, tw and mainland comes from singer songwriters because they are creative enough to come up with melodies or lyrics that stand out from the general cookie cutter formula for songs that the record labels give their other artists.

 

If you aren't a singer song writer but have a great voice, you can get stuck with horrible songs and fail miserably because there aren't enough creative people to work with behind the scenes, or they dont want to pay to use the best people.

no, i don't remember anything about that stephy song...left me with no impression...

all i know is, in HK, the higherups these days are businessmen/accountant, not ppl who have any music sense...

they tell the songwriters what type of song they want..basically just copy what's popular and pay them little...

they run the music industry they run those knock off goods factory and now the minority of ppl in HK who still cares about cantopop is the type who likes these cookie cutter ballads...they mainly care about the lyrics..

alot of songwriters left the trade and the remaining ones write those cookie cutter songs the way the execs requested to get the paycheck.....singers songwriters do everything themselves, less expenses for the company, so they give them more artistic freedom in return..
