AKB48 (derived from Akihabara 48) is a female Japanese idol group produced by Akimoto Yasushi. They have their own theater in Akihabara (a district in Tokyo) where they perform regularly. The concept of the group is "idols you can meet". AKB48 is named after Akihabara (Akiba for short), the area in Tokyo where the group's theater is located. The idea of AKB48's producer Yasushi Akimoto was to create a girl group that, unlike a regular pop group, which gives occasional concerts and that is mostly seen on TV, would have its own theater and perform there on a daily basis; the fans would always be able to go and see the girls live. AKB48 still performs at the theater daily, with tickets distributed by lottery.Akimoto has also expanded the AKB48 concept to several sister groups throughout Asia.

The group consists of four "teams" (subgroups): Team A, Team K, and Team B, and Team 4. Having several teams not only allows the group to reduce the load on its members, since a daily concert at the theater is given by only one team, but also gives AKB48 opportunity to perform in several places and even countries simultaneously. Each of the teams also has a unique image.According to member Misaki Iwasa, Team A represents freedom, Team B is very idol-like with cutesy costumes, while Team K has a strong and powerful image. In 2010, Team 4 was formed, however, disbanded after 2 years. A new Team 4 was revived in 2013 with different members.
According to an early press release, the group intended to have 16 members on each team to make a total member count of 48but had varied the member count over time,and had as many as 92. A number of aspiring members (so-called trainees or kenkyūsei(研究生?)) learn the group's songs and are appointed as understudies for the main members, so that a replacement is always available.

In addition to singing performances, members are heavily promoted throughout the Japanese mass media. The group regularly holds "handshake events", where fans get a chance to shake hands with the group's members.

Currently, they hold the record of having the highest overall single sales (of a female group) on the Oricon charts.

AKB48 Election

It is an even that take place once a year in the summer where fans of AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, HKT48 votes for their favorite members. Originally mandatory, in 2013, members were given choices to sign up for the election or bow out in the newly established candidacy system.
1st to 16th places will take place in main single promotion on TV music shows and varieties.
17th - 32th are Undergirls
33th to 48th are Next girls
49th to 60th are Future Girls

AKB48 Janken

Janken or rock paper scissor competition is held once every year to determine the senbatsu members that will take place in the winter single at the end of the year. Unlike election, Janken is by luck which give unpopular girls a chance to make senbatsu.

There's gonna more than twice the amount of votes as last year me thinks so I wouldn't count on that. Competition throughout the whole election is gonna be BIG.

It's interesting, yeah alot of Acchan focus. I don't think it's as dramatic like last year with everyone dying backstage but the no dating thing is interesting... it's pretty sad about Yuka's situation when she said girls like us, our love won't be accepted, we can only leave  :(

It was to show how serious she is at getting top 16 since she was disappointed about not making it last year. This was her speech when she ranked

 

 

Good evening everyone, my name is Yamamoto Sayaka of NMB48’s Team N. I’d like to thank everyone who have pushed me to such great heights with this stunning placement. Last year I was 28th and part of UG, and this year, I placed 10 places higher, and I am very grateful. 

But my goal this year was to make senbatsu, so in that regard, I am disappointed. This past year, I was allowed to participate as a senbatsu member in AKB singles, and I am sure there are people who did not take that well. But I didn’t leave lasting results, just mixing in with my seniors.

I let down my group. 

Those pressures were plenty, and I thought ‘Is it necessary to make senbatsu?’ but what I learned from my seniors in senbatsu is a treasure that I will take back to my group. I will bring honor and confidence to this 18th position. 

Please don’t say I’m sorry, I am so thankful of everyone. Thank you very much.

Thinking about AKB's future these day kinda worry me...some of these push girls are really nothing more than pretty faces...... :sad:

 

Some how, i don't see this being the likely reason.

 

There're alot of expectations over her rank this year due to the push --> people go check out her vid.

80% of NMB are fuggers, so is HKT. Nogizaka is the only true calling. 

 

And what pretty faces? Paruru has the most notorious rat face I have ever seen in my life. Rest of Team 4 isn't any better. Besides maybe Iriyama Anna and Lemon (but she's in NMB now)

 

The quality of AKB is decreasing in terms of looks. Maybe in 2015 AKB will go downhill from being Japan's national idol to shitty idol if management keep doing this shit.

SNH was low budget too tho they have nice camera that make it look good

The center is big boobies from B, kojima something. One is KKS, idk about the other. Idk maybe saho haven't rise in popularity that much so management won't push her :/
