The Shanghai-based boyfriend was willing to rent her out by the hour, day or month to get Apple’s latest handset. Thankfully he drew the line at offering “funny business†with her.

This week a Shanghai man offered a “girlfriend share†so he could raise money to buy an iPhone 6.

He advertised the deal near the Songjiang University campus, with pictures of him and his sign hitting Chinese social media yesterday. The Bastille Post reported that his motivation was to be able to afford Apple’s new handset.

The girlfriend was supposedly in on the plan, with the man offering hourly, daily and monthly deals.

The sign read: “Sharing girlfriend for pocket money. 10RMB [£1] per hour, 50RMB per day, 500RMB a month. If you are interested, connect to personal hotspot ‘wifi sharing master’ to check out the girlfriend.â€

It is unclear if anyone took up the offer, but there were plenty of interested parties.

And he was good enough to provide a full profile of his beloved.

The profile revealed that his girlfriend’s name was Xiao Ai, and had details of her height, weight and the fact that she was a foreign language student.

He explained that the deal got the buyer the chance to eat meals with his girlfriend, but no ‘OOXX’, which we can interpret as ‘funny business’.

The profile also stated that, “Service items include but are not restricted to: eating together, studying together, saving seats (in libraries/classrooms), three-person dates. Fees generated during dates should be split.â€

Unsurprisingly, the pictures went viral on Chinese social media and the man was widely criticised.

This user of Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, wrote: “Today he can share his girlfriend for a cellphone. Tomorrow he will desire a car, a house, a newer girlfriend, prettier and richer women… such moral-less and unethical people have too many desires to satisfy! And as time goes on, girlfriends of such people will have to take on more part-time jobs!â€

This user wrote, sarcastically: “By the time you can share your son, you will earn more!â€

Shanghai’s new Prince Charming faces another issue: the iPhone 6 may not be available in China until 2015.

The new models, available tomorrow in most regions, have not been approved by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology so they can’t go on sale in the country. Apple spokesperson Carolyn Wu said: “China is a key market for us and we will get here as soon as possible.â€

Still, the budding entrepreneur could always buy an import. The handsets are currently being advertised in Hong Kong for between £790 and £1,580.
