Restarting my article translations but I found this discussion going on. I thought I'd post it as many people have asked me questions on sexuality in Korea

Out of your close colleagues, friends, and family, are any of them gay, lesbian, or transgender?

Original Korean source:

English Translation:

OP: "Korea is at the lowest with 4%. It isn't because we don't have any (of these people) in our community (surroundings) but just that we don't know (who they are). Those people must be living hiding it...."

Some comments:

(those answer yes/no are saying if they know someone or not)

-"There's no other option.. If LGBT people are found out, they're dead."

-I would have confidently answered "yes"

-How bitter.

-We're really that low?

-Yes.

-I honestly have no clue...Because we don't talk about it where I live

-They have to hide it I guess, especially in our country

-Yes

-I know someone.. although I'm the only one they've toldã…‹ã…‹

-If someone confessed to me I'd be really thankful..

-Yes

-There's a difference between the East and the West.. It must be hard for those people..Prejudice and bitterness

-I know someone!!!!!!

-I can't tell anyone about me, I feel it's too prejudice.

-I know someone but... they are keeping it a secret for the rest of their lives..

-I guess coming out seems a taboo subject in our society..

-No

-I'm bisexual ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

-Yes

-My younger sibling is a lesbian

-There is someone

-I know a few people!

-Hul...??

-I'm bisexual too...

-I would feel happy if someone trusted me and told me and I would support them

-I know someone who is bisexual

-I'm bisexual~ =ã……=

-There are so many bisexual people where I live :)

-Yes! I know loads! And myself am pansexual.

-Mm, my friend told me and I am thankful. I didn't know how she would think I would react but she was glad I reacted positively.

-I'm a lesbian

-? What.. There are loads of LGBT people

-Wow, it's really that low...I wish people where I am from would not feel pressured to keep it inside..

-There are more than you think ;)

-Hul...our country....

-I'm bisexual and my best friend is lesbian. We're actually dating right now ã…‹ã…‹

-Mm, my friend is gay and it didn't change anything, he's still my friend!

-That's right, they feel they have no choice but to keep it inside...

Note: No picking and choosing of comments were done, it was from top to bottom (no where near all comments were included though.)

the comments are really cool <3 So many people who identify as bisexuals. I think that in one or two generations this will change pretty dramatically there (or so I hope)

lmao spain is the first one on the list, go us

Wish Taiwan were included, would've been interesting to see results since they're pretty progressive with lgbt rights.

I was surprised after I got into k-pop how homophobic Koreans are

Japan, China, Hong Kong are all a lot more progressive in this area

It is really said to see Korea at the lowest but I'm not exactly surprised. Although people in India and in African countries get stoned and beaten to death and there are still lies on the books that can have them thrown in jail and potentially put to death if it's found out that their gay. Pretty sure they would be at the bottom of the list if they were included in this poll. Gay and Lesbian people might get stigmatized but people are a lot more civilized and as we can see in the comments section any taboos that were once important can have lasting effects even if the society has moved on and the people are more open minded. At one point it was very taboo to be gay in Korea, and people are still scared to come out because of how people were discriminated against in the past. Even in 20 years, as Korea evolves even more, I doubt being gay will become less stigmatized if someone important or a group of influential people don't step up and say there is nothing wrong with being gay and someone doesn't create a safer environment for LGBTQ people to be themselves.

Good to see there are many young people slowly becoming more open minded. Some of the comments were so sweet.

And yea, the impact it would have if a couple of influential people would come out would be great. I hope that'll happen, but I doubt it to be any time soon.

The Korean youth is far accepting of homosexuality than the older generations are. I believe it was around 70% of young Koreans that didn't care (in Japan, it was similar, though there were more older generations who viewed it positively than the older generations of Korea and Japanese youth was around 80% in viewing it positively). I can't remember where I read this though :(

Which site is it from? I think it should always be clearly stated because comments about sensitive topics can be VERY VERY different depending on which site you choose to translate. For example, you can translate Ilbe comments without telling it and that can be taken as general K-net comments although there is no such thing as 'general K-net'.

Definitely agree. I posted a reply asking for the source but no reply. :l This is why Koreabang is a good place to go for for netizens debating hard social issues.
