Pharmacist vs Medical technologist

They're a bit different to compare.

Pharmacists here need a doctorates degree while medical technologist only need a bachelor's majoring in Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology. A more better comparison would be a Pharmacy Tech which most states only require a vocational program certificate.

Having said that being a Medical Technologist is a great career, but chances of moving up is rare, unlike other medical field jobs like Nursing.

If you're up for the long term commitment of Pharmacy school then obviously being a Pharmacist is the "better" job due to the pay. However recent studies have shown that Pharmacist are now finding the job much less beneficial and more stressful.

:)

Edit: just wanted to add that I have a Bachelors in Medical Technology, but I will he starting Medical School next semester. I never got my license to work as a Medical Technologist because I only picked it as my pre-med. Having gone through the clinical stages during university, the work is very repetitive and boring. You sit in a lab for most of the day if you work in a hospital.

Yay, someone that seems to know much about this ^^ let me bother u a bit please ;c

I know they are so different but ughgg, I now have the opportunity to change my major to pharmacy :'(

My cousin is VERY pleased with her job ( she studied pharmacy) and she told me to consider it well. My plan was originally to get a master degree in MLS and continue for a PHd or not if I get lazy after the master but now idk... .:("

I'm up for the commitment ( like let's say 6 years after I take my bachelor degree) but as I said I'm confused.

I'm rethinking about it because ik it's rare to move up as a med technologists, even tho I can and it would be great but it's rare and not easy, another reason is the payment >< But some are getting payed a lot as a med-tech so that made me more confused :'(

So what do you think? :/

Ohh, and I really enjoy my courses and I think the job is great but I know it'll get boring if it doesn't improve.

Edit: I just saw the last part. Yeah ik it'll get boring but don't u think I can do better after the master degree? I'm willing t take a PHd too :/

Going to a med school was an option in my mind but I guess I got either lazy ( the idea of being a med student seems very tiring, even tho my courses are the same as those med students take except for the fact they take 2 or 3 more courses at once in the same semester)  or enjoyed my courses a lot and I want to work in the MLs field :/

I edited my post about my educational background.

Seems like you have concerns of the job. As far as I know Medical Technology jobs are all the same and will never offer any form of "excitement." The job is very easy though which is a plus since the curriculum is very straining.

As for payment, working in clinics will land you a better paying job than in a hospital. But that's because in clinics Medical Technologist are also the ones to take samples to be tested, not nurses.

Although being a Pharmacist is also a bit repetitive....

I do recommend getting your Masters Degree atleast if you continue to pursue Medical Technology. That way you'll become specialized and be paid more for almost the same amount of job. Get your Masters in Hematology after your Bachelors.

I edited mine too.

I am very concerned yeah :c

I will get my master degree, that's an already made decision and I'm interested in.. ok in everything omg :/

Micro and immunity seems so interesting but I have always been interested in genetics, like even before I chose MLS I wanted to get into genetics but they told me taking a bachelor degree in MLs then a master ins human genetics would be much better. So I'm thinking of " Diagnostic Molecular Biology and Human Genetics"  as my 1st choice for the master and then my 2nd option would be " Clinical Microbiology Immunology and Serology" Or hematology and blood banking.

What I don't like about pharmacist that yeah it'll get repetitive and also I don't think I like the job or courses for that matter ( all organic chem, meh) but I can adjust if my salary as a med tech will be so bad  :horror:

BTW, when I take my master degree, where can I work? :/

Would there be any difference? everyone told me it'll pay more but wouldn't it be the same job?

Also, what do u think about becoming a researcher? Is there any other option?

sorry for asking a lot :c

Masters in anything would be great honestly.

Again as for pay, the pay for Medical Technologist are better than most jobs. I think people confuse it with Lab Techs who do somewhat similar jobs. Medical Technologists do however get paid less than Nurses. But like I said, the work is much much easier.

When you get your Master's Degree it opens you up for more management jobs, ie being in charge of a group of Med Techs. That and it'll allow you to work as a researcher for most hospitals and private clinics. Depending on what specialization you choose, a Master's Degree will also allow you to work side by side with a doctor, much like Nurse Practitioners (Master's in Nursing) do.

Ik that med technicians are not the same as technologists but I still don't know what is the dif tbh, I just know that they are dif but they work the same :/

Oh, here is also the thing, I don't want to work in a lazy easy job :/ that's why I'm willing to even take a PHd except that I see no dif of getting a higher degree if the job would remain almost the same.

Which specialty do u think is the best in MLS?

Aaand 2 last Qs...

If I had the opportunity to continue in Med school / pharmacy ( for the pharmacy i'd work as a supervisor in a pharmaticular company, which is a lot better than being in the pharmacy and selling, preparing the drugs) or a specialty in MLS which do u advice me to take? ( rank them please) And u might got an idea about how I think so what do u think?

Also, what d u think of continuing in genetics and working in fertility labs and such? some told me no one would hire me because my bachelor degree is not in genetics but others tell me I can specially with my master degree.

The biggest differences would be Medical Technologists are more knowledgeable of equipments and that they can test more than just your basic blood sugar and iron levels. You also test for viruses, bacteria, etc etc.

I can't really say what program is best when it comes to Master's. All I know is if I was going to get a Master's I would get it in Hematology since you'll be working alongside doctors who specialize in blood disorders. Considering that blood related disorders are increasing, like blood cancer, then it's a great field to specialize in if you want a great long term job.

If payment and excitement are the only criteria then definitely being a supervisor at a pharmaceutical company. But you have to think, how many supervisors do pharm companies actually need? Those companies only hire the best and usually ones who have a strong work background. Which means you'd still need to clock in a few years of working in a regular pharmacy to put in your resume.

Also as long as you get a Master's Degree in Human Genetics you should be fine getting jobs related to that field. It's a specialty field so yeah most companies require a Master's.

ohhh, I see.

Yeah, my cousin said that, she is now a manager, was a supervisor but got promoted to a manager, she enjoys her job a lot and she kills herself there, which why I admire her and she really gets paid a lot. and yeah, it took her years to get there...

I think I got this well, I'm sticking with MLS I guess and hopefully the master will help, it can't be so bad after getting a master I think. And I really enjoy the major so there gotta be a way to get higher or do sth dif in the future.

Thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much, like really you have been a great help  And u were so patient with me so thanks for that too

Wish you all the best ^_^
