It's simply a mixture of both traditional and simplified Chinese together, although there are pronunciation differences in Japanese in comparison to Chinese even though it's the same character. The Japanese took that and later incorporated it with a Hiragana phonetic alphabet, so the Japanese language is essentially a mix of kanji, hiragana and the more modern katakana alphabet (used for spelling out foreign words like 'erebeta' for 'elevator') It is hella complicated to learn, but it is beautiful.
