─ Synopsis ─

Yoona has wielded and honed her natural craft of magic as much as she could within the suffocating walls of her 15th floor 2 bedroom flat in Seoul, Korea. After years of deprivation of learning greater, powerful magic, her father finally agrees to enroll her into Asia’s finest Witchcraft and Wizardry School, â€˜Hogwarts Asia’.

Stepping out into the real world of magic, Yoona embarks on a journey she had never expected. She'd predicted she'd make lifelong friends and foes but she hadn't thought, even in her wildest dreams, that she'd be battling tooth and nail against the darkest power Asia had ever seen.

00 | Prologue

Within the four walls of her measly bedroom, Yoona stood in the centre of her room, shifting her weight onto her right leg with her head down in disappointment. Her father refused to teach her today, spouting ridiculous excuses the third time this week. She sighed exasperatedly, brushing her dark brown locks away from her face before pursing her lips together to form a grim expression at her surroundings. She had had enough of this place. She wanted out. Her father could keep her in the confines of her bedroom this summer for only so long. She wanted to practice her craft of magic at a wider scale, beyond these sandy fawn coloured walls.

Yoona stamped her left foot in frustration, this just wasn't fair. For years her father home-schooled her magical drafts and potions. She had begun reading, researching spells at the age of ten and had finally begun casting spells at the age of eleven within her home.  But still, five years later at the age of sixteen her father had yet to grant her permission to leave the house other than to mingle with the mind-numbing muggles at her high school in her home city, Seoul.

She wanted to study magic with people of her own age, was that so difficult to grant her?

A sudden tap on her bedroom window jolted her from her thoughts. Her heart skipped a beat at the sound. It was almost as if someone had thrown a rock at her window. But that’d be impossible she thought. She did live on the 15th floor of Seoul 'Soul House' block of flats after all.

With her early frustration dampened, she had trodden closer to her closed window situated above her untidy bed. She could see nothing out of the ordinary. The sun still hung high in the cloudless sky and the replica of her block of flats stood opposite her; tall, dull and grey. She could count exactly fifteen floors of the building opposite her, where balconies were filled with clothes hung up to dry in the light summer wind. She could faintly see muggle children kicking a ball to one another. Or so she thought. She could only see a mess of dots moving around the park close to her building from where she stood at the 15th floor.

Definitely nothing out of the ordinary, she nodded to herself and began to turn to attend to the messy stack of books on her bed, but snapped back into her earlier position when she heard another sharp tap at her window.

In all its glory, an enormous golden eagle stood perched on her stained window sill; its head tilted to its right as its piercing golden eyes glowered back at her. Its impressive russet feathers were windswept, as if it had travelled through a tornado. With its curved beak it tapped on her window at an alarming rate.

Yoona stepped backwards, both her eyes and mouth wide open in awe. She could swear she felt her something inside her chest tap on her ribs with the same, haunting rhythm.  Her breath hitched and goose bumps covered every inch of her skin at the realisation.

“Yoona! How many times do I have to tell you that dinner is ready?â€

Her father's voice was muffled over the sound of her heart beat drumming in her ears. She stood still as figurine as the eagle began to flutter its great wings. With one hefty pull, it lifted off her window sill and soared with lightning speed.

“Your food is going to get cold! I made your favourite, dak galbiâ€. Her father’s booming voice pulled her out of her trance. Shaking her head in confusion, she placed her hand over her chest to calm her heart. What was that?

“I’ll be out in a sec!†Yoona replied before scurrying her way across her small room, opening her tiny draw and taking out a yellow hair band to tie her long, dark locks.

Breathing in from her nose and out of her mouth she turned the door handle of her bedroom, making her way through the narrow corridor of the flat she shared with her widowed father and into the kitchen where her father sat on his crooked chair sipping his hot black coffee that he held in one hand and reading from the muggle daily newspaper ‘Seoul Times’ in the other.

She never understood his fascination of reading muggle news. It was the same everyday. News of murders, rape, wars, economic turmoil… The muggles were a mess.

After hearing her footsteps in the kitchen, her father folded the newspaper, placing it on the coffee table (or really, their super-small sized dinner table). He took one long sip of his black coffee before putting it down onto the table as well.

“Have you sorted out those books of yours?†he enquired with his thick eyebrows raised at his daughter.

Yoona made her way towards the rows of cups near the kitchen sink, took one and filled it with drinking water before replying to him.

“No, I haven’t yet. But I promise I’ll sort them out before night falls Dadâ€

Her father clucked his tongue at her response. Yoona took a gulp of water to relax her nerves that had risen from encountering an eagle at her bedroom window. She shook her head again like she had done in her room. She was going crazy, she was sure of it. Yoona contemplated whether to tell her father but she knew her father would just roll his eyes at her. He never took her seriously; he’d probably say it was merely her ‘imagination’ playing with her.

She loved her father, she really did. He was such a patient, honest and kind man. But he was awfully protective of her, never allowing her to spread her wings, never to let her imagination flow. Instead he’d rather stifle her growth. She knew why he was so protective of her, her Godmother Annie had told her when she had attended Annie’s son’s birthday party in Busan that year she’d turned twelve. Her father had become protective of her ever since her mother had been murdered mercilessly by a dark power after going on an expedition to England.

It had been the Killing Curse that had killed her mother. One of the three Unforgivable Curses. She knew nothing about her mother other than a single photo of her that her father kept by his bedside. A photo of her mother in a beautiful meadow holding a babe in her arm, smiling brightly at the camera.

Yoona wished her mother lived long, at least long enough for her to be able to remember memories of her, but she had died when she was too young for her to remember her at all.

“Nevermind that now, I have something to tell you. But don’t you cry on me now.†Her father smiled softly at her, though his dark eyes were filled with worry and uncertainty. He cleared his throat before reaching for her hand that rested on the table. She loved holding her father’s hands as a young girl, it was always warm and she never minded that his hands texture were rough against her own. Now that she'd grown up, they never held hands as much as they used to but she still loved it.

“Well… After months of deliberation, I've decided to enrol you into Hogwarts Asia this new academic year coming.â€

Instantly her breath was cut short and her heart hammered in her chest with excitement. Grinning widely at her father; she jumped off her chair, sending it flying backwards and tackled her father into a tight embrace, her arms around his neck.

Her father laughed heartily, patting her back gently.

“I knew you would be happy.â€

Pulling her arms away from his neck, she rested her hands on her father’s shoulders to stare at him in confusion.

“But why di-? How?... I don’t understand.†Her eyes were already filled with tears of joy, blurring the vision of her father in front of her.

“Didn't I say not to cry? ...You’re just like your mother.†He sighed deeply, moving his arms away from her back to stroke her hair. Yoona wiped her tears away hastily before grinning sheepishly up at him.

“If you must know, I’ve been… Bending the law keeping you away from Hogwarts. Every child born a wizard or witch must attend school between the ages of eleven and eighteen. Our secret –using magic in the muggle world – has also been revealed recently. Let’s just say I’ve been receiving quite threatening letters through our letterbox, despite my close relationship with the headmaster at Hogwarts Asia. I think I took it too far this time. But at least you’ll still have two years at Hogwarts. Besides, I’ve done a hefty but remarkable job in teaching you all on my own. You probably know more than the witches your age, I promise you that.â€

Yoona looked at her father’s soft, murky eyes that always warmed at the sight of her. His dark hair had began to grey as of late and age-revealing wrinkles marked his face. He had done enough for her; he’d done so much for her already. Though she complained often, she really did appreciate him.

“Thank you, Dad. Thank you so much,†she said softly, smiling sincerely at him.

“Now,†her father stood up with his cup in hand, no guessing to refill it, “have I ever told you about Diagon Alley, sweetheart?â€

I hope you all liked it! :D There may be a few mistakes here and there, so bare with me. I'm not an English student but a Mathematics PhD student  :)

I use British English by the way. We write it 'realise' not 'realize', 'centre' not 'center', 'colour' not 'color'. Flats is another word for apartment. We don't often use that in England, sorry. I hope you're all okay with that.

This is just the prologue. Most characters will be introduced in the first, proper chapter.
