oh shit

Joakim Noah gets 20-game suspension for banned supplement

The NBA has suspended New York Knicks center Joakim Noah for 20 games for violating the league's anti-drug policy, it was announced Saturday.

The suspension will start when Noah -- who has not played since Feb. 4 and had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Feb. 27 to remove a loose body -- is "eligible and physically able to play" in either a regular season or playoff game, the NBA said. The suspension would then carry into the 2017-18 season.

Noah, 32, tested positive for an over-the-counter supplement -- selective androgen receptor modulator LGD-4033 -- that is banned under the NBA's current collective bargaining agreement.

LGD-4033 is defined as a "non-steroidal, selective androgen receptor modulator that, much like testosterone, can create anabolic activity in muscles and bones" and "provides many of the muscle-building and therapeutic benefits of testosterone, without the same level of troublesome side effects," according to elitefitness.com.

The Knicks signed Noah to a four-year, $72 million contract over the summer with the hopes that he could be a defensive anchor for the club. Noah has performed well below expectations, missing time throughout the season because of a hamstring injury.

Noah is averaging 5.0 points and 8.8 rebounds in 46 games (all starts) this season.

LOOK: Lakers honor Shaquille O'Neal with statue outside Staples Center

Former Laker greats, including Kobe Bryant, speak at ceremony

Los Angeles finally gets to look at something bigger than Shaq.

The Lakers unveiled a nine-foot, 1,200-pound bronze statue of NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal outside of Staples Center in a ceremony on Friday. A plethora of Shaq’s former teammates and coaches, including legends Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, were in attendance.

Magic Johnson elected not to attend so that he could scout players in Friday’s Sweet 16 game between Kentucky and UCLA, but a video of Magic’s well-wishes and congratulations was played during the ceremony.

The video was followed by a speech by Abdul-Jabbar, who unloaded a series of jokes before getting into his more serious sentiments about Shaq’s impact on the city, and on basketball in general.

West spoke next about acquiring O’Neal and his character:

Next up was Kobe, who kept it short and sweet, but gave a funny story about how Shaq once got revenge on David Robinson.

After Kobe, Shaq’s six children took the stage and three of them -- Taahira, Amir’ah and Myles -- spoke. Then it was time to unveil the statue, followed by an acceptance speech by O’Neal himself.

Shaq’s statue will hang 10 feet above the ground in Star Plaza, alongside the statues of other Los Angeles sports greats like Abdul-Jabbar, longtime Lakers announcer Chick Hearn, Magic and West.

The plaque that will be unveiled next to Shaq's statue outside Staples Center.

Kobe and Shaq team up again at O'Neal's statue unveiling

The two of them sat next to each other on stage. They laughed, they joked, they acknowledged each other’s place in the franchise’s lore.

As they did it, a fraught chapter in Lakers history closed.

“Brother, thank you,” Shaquille O’Neal said to Kobe Bryant, standing on a stage at Star Plaza in front of Staples Center, as Bryant sat near him, smiling. “We pushed each other. We had our battles. We had our times. We always had respect for each other, and we were able to win three championships. Definitely couldn’t have done it without you. I appreciate you very much.”

Moments later, the crowd chanted a countdown, then a gold cloth fell, revealing a bronze sculpture hanging from a Staples Center awning, depicting O’Neal hanging from a rim after dunking with both hands, his feet swinging into the air.

“I’ll probably come back out later tonight, about three, four in the morning, and just sit there,” O’Neal said. “Looks good. Sculptors did an excellent job. Muscles look great. The face though looks like Stone Cold Steve Austin but that’s OK. They did a great job.”

On Friday afternoon, O’Neal’s statue became the seventh at Staples Center. It hung just behind Jerry West’s statue, and not far from Magic Johnson’s. Hockey players Luc Robitaille and Wayne Gretzky, late broadcaster Chick Hearn, and boxer Oscar DeLa Hoya also have statues outside the arena.

“It was good to see them on the stage together,” Lakers Coach Luke Walton said of Byrant and O’Neal. “They’re great people. They’re obviously one of the best duos of all time. What they accomplished together was just incredible. To see them up there, paying respects to each other, laughing on the stage, was a lot of fun. I think it was great for everyone that has loved the Lakers and the NBA.”

More than a dozen former teammates attended, as did Dale Brown, O’Neal’s coach at Louisiana State, and rapper Snoop Dogg. O’Neal asked each to stand up as their names were called. He recalled his memories of some of the most memorable moments of the Lakers three championship runs with Bryant.

He told of his first day in L.A., when some kid was passing him the ball for a workout. That kid was then-rookie Derek Fisher.
