About kdrama

I'm still new to kdrama so I've been wondering about a few things:

1) are the "romantic storyline" series much more cheesy than western version? If you rate it against soap operas or melodrama shows.

2) do you know a really good one (that has good storyline) vs. A really bad one? Like how in western The Blacklist would be considered a better story line than watching the recent Criminal Mind episodes. Or how House is better than grey anatomy.

I'm curious whether i should check out kdrama or would i not like it because I'm used to western shows. Thanks

1. Yes... Really Korean dramas are much cheesier than American ones... I haven''t watched much American series but I've watched a lot of Korean ones to notice this

2. A good one Cruel city vs a bad one... Idk I have never finished bad dramas so well... The thing is it's harder to find good Korean dramas compared to American series. Good American soap series are easier to find.

Frankly, it's hard to say.

If you only follow the popular romcoms like Boys Over Flowers/Secret Garden/The Heirs ... etc. obviously, you will find them really really cheesy and not really creative because it's the same old formula without much originaly added. However, if you dig deeper, you may find some jewels.

Recently, I have finished Marriage not Dating on tvN and it is really the best romcom in years. The formula is not really original because it has love triangle/square, contract dating/marriage ... etc. BUT the scriptwriter wrote it with such wits. And the characters are actually well-developped, it's really hilarious and heartwarming :)

Do you plan to only watch romcoms or are you going to watch other genres too like thriller/historical ?

Because if you do, I recommand you one of the best drama ever. It's a sageuk called, Tree with Deep Roots, starring Han Suk Gyu and Jang Hyuk. You have amazing directing, amazing writing and amazing acting. You may find the beginning a little bit slow because you do not know what's going on but really, the storyline is so compelling and interesting that you end up falling in love with it.

Oh and for the thriller, I recommand you the ones on cable dramas because they are more daring and original than those on national TV even though Iris was quite good. OCN does a lot of thriller/police stuffs like the Ten series :)
