yeah yoon is much better with her enunciation than sieun lol the difference is so clear, sieun is 100% nasal, even seeun the others girls don't sound as nasal as her
1:03 vs 1:15
I saw this video before it was on the official Naver channel and seriously, it's actually shameful that they label this as 'live'. Not only is the backtrack ridiculously loud, but the pitch-correction makes them sound extremely tinny whenever it kicks in, which it seems to do a lot as they have managed to edit them to sound practically exactly like the official track. Also there are times where the voice keeps playing at the same volume while they're moving the mic away from their mouths, so I doubt whether this is live in ANY sense of the word. Reminded me of the video made by a sone where a lot of this 'live' stuff got called out.

*mezzo, alto is not a voice type
but yeah question mark because it’s a grain of salt but it gives me hope lol
from the context it seems as if they meant contralto. hence why they said that they'd never heard of someone being called a contralto and actually being one, but rarely being a mezzo. also technically mezzo should be called mezzo-soprano so you could argue that's wrong too.

While I do think that some minor live audio processing is a possibility, I highly doubt that they would have retrospectively gone back to record over anything. This was a hole in the wall performance for a TV fundraiser and I doubt SM or anyone else cared even if one of the girls did crack. In 2007, I also don't really think that was a thing - back then, it was definitely expected for groups to sing live and those that didn't were severely bashed for it for being "talentless". Nowadays, everyone gets away with lipsyncing to a prerecorded track, even at smaller off-broadcast events. There's definitely re-recording for concerts (i.e. that Lion Heart performance I posted was definitely post-processed and potentially re-recorded in some parts) but that 2007 ITNW performance was completely live, imo.
I agree - I also think it was live. Essentially I was just saying that with the sound, it's unlikely there was post or live processing, and it would've had to be recorded over if there were any 'fixes' that needed to be done. But yeah, I did say that I doubted this would've been important enough for that anyway

Also, this doesn't seem live to me. Maybe they did sang it live but there was some post processing on it.

With the fact that this was also 2007 in mind, I don't think there is significant post-processing or live auto-tune. What it may be however - although I'm not sure how important this performance was so they may not have done it - is that they could have gone back and recorded over any bad moments. That was done pretty often for important performances like DVD concerts and such, and is still done a fair bit now.
But I think it's also viable to give them the benefit of the doubt when they did practice this song for a whole year. I feel like you'd get pretty damn good at knowing how to control your breathing and get your part practically perfect.

I thought this was like a 'don't smile' challenge? You can see other members trying to keep a straight face as well.

This is the only clip we have in first place lol .... She sounds like a light version of Katie from K-pop star.
The only 4th gen( new gen) vocalist that somehow showcase real consistent "support" is Pink fantasy's Yeachan
https://twitter.com/WINKISSINO/status/1059206746504380416?s=19
That was what I thought but I also didn't want to look like a dummy if that wasn't what was being discussed haha
Also Yechan sounds pretty good! I've never even heard of her group tbh
Edit: Oh wait yes I have, but only because they have that one member that wears a creepy rabbit head costume :/
-
really? i thought completely different. what makes you say her lower register isn't impressive?
If we're all talking about the same clip, this one:
Then really she didn't do that well lower-range wise. She tried a couple of times to hit a G3 and it came out quiet and muffled. The only lower notes I could pick out that sounded clear and strong were a couple A#3, which is a reasonable note for any soprano to hit.

i can't take anyone seriously if they stan jimin and you're talking about vocals
Hahaha lmao okay you literally have never heard me talk about Jimins vocals but ok I can't stan anyone unless they're Beyonce, note taken thx
Edit: also wtf you could have picked literally anybody else, like it's not like Irene or Krystal are that great either. You were really keen to jump on Jimin, huh?

With all these comparisons (or anti-comparisons idk) to Ailee, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned or commented on this:
-
It's really weird when it comes to talking lol. I don't think I talked low, cuz it didn't feel that way at all, but then I recorded myself and checked it on a tuner. I was talking along the F#2 till D2 range LMAO. I was like, whattttt.
I remember that female kpop singers also speak relatively low even though they sound like air when they sing below A3 lol. They speak clearly even around E3.
My normal speaking voice (not like excited or being jokey or whatever) centers around F3... which isn't that low?? Idk but then yeah, I have been told by a lot of people my voice is low. I have a suspicion it could be because my voice carries really well (always has, it's a curse) which might make it sound fuller and thus lower? I don't know, but anyway yeah talking pitch is weird.
-
Yeah, I honestly have a lot of trouble understanding the chesty tenors thing. To be fair, I havent watched a full video of him singing, just vocal range videos. And in those videos, the amount of chest that he has on those Eb4s kind of reminds me of other untrained baritone that just shouts out the notes as loud as they could (AKA, me before this year lol, at least now ain't I sound like I'm pushing as slowly as possible lol). And even those A4s you linked... I mean.. He's shouting lol.
I'm not sure how to detect the 'speech-like sound'.
I would honestly bet that Charlie Puth is a baritone too. I mean, I'd be shocked if he wasn't. Just listen to that guy talk. It's not only the fact that he talks in a low range (well within the second octave) but his tone just sounds like a discount Batman lol. His singing is a very light approach but it just obvious that he can't keep up anywhere above F4.
So, how can we clearly differentiate a tenor that is very chesty compared to a baritone that also has a very heavy approach, but relatively light tone? It's also confusing for me cuz the tenor would have trouble singing in the same range that Id associate with a baritone.
It's weird that talking-pitch thing, because I've been told by a lot of people that I have a low voice for girls but when I sing... I'm definitely a soprano. Like even though it's taken me a ridiculously long time to develop my upper range (like, years) and still sometimes struggle, I definitely sound like a soprano.

How Good and by what standards? Ones that have been discussed in the thread at some point to be skilled in modern pop and are mainstream are Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Tori Kelly, the guys in Pentatonix, Michael Buble, Lady Gaga, and John Legend. Not quite sure what the bar is, but Ari's had some amount of improvement / return to her previous level of skill as a younger singer lol and Demi I have no idea where she is at her voice currently. Since it's Christmas time, can I slide in Frank Sinatra and Robert Goulet even tho they're old contemporary singers
?Wait hold on
what's wrong with the girl in pentatonix? Admittedly haven't listened to them in forever but I always thought she was as good as the boys?

is that some type of asmr? Because if so, I'm up to it
God you just made me imagine some weird future where there are asmr technique and critique threads like this vocal thread I can't why did you

-
lol really? maybe im not remembering the right instance but i thought u got good responses xD youre musically trained, right?
i think i posted covers so much that people started to ignore them LOL
I'm not going to bring old shit up so under spoiler haha
I posted a cover of ITNW I did once, and someone that I'd literally never seen before on the thread responded with something like 'oh wow like no offense but you can't sing and shouldn't sing' and my response was 'where is it not supported'. This wasn't because I know for sure my support is A+ but like just???? Where is the constructive criticism????? And then it blew up and in the end people said 'both sides reacted badly'. But like personally, honestly how was I meant to respond to that. Oh my god you're right I can't sing I should quit singing thank you so much for the feedback??????? Whack
Oh also I was musically trained but not classically trained - which some people were mad that I mixed up at some point. I only have quite minimal classical training.

There was one on allkpop forums since at least 2011/2012 (could be even longer ago). And when AKP forums got shut down for a while, onehallyu opened during that time and the core people from that thread moved here, including Ahmin, Josias, Zhx, Akisame, Nikki, “Alyâ€, Keith, and me. There was a lot of drama between the vocal pedagogists and I was just posting my covers lmao basically the same thing that happens now xD
I posted a cover once, that was a bad time lmao
-
Can I go deaf or something.... '-'
Honestly I still love his voice but it's that YG 'training' coming through :(

-
As far as I remember, she hasn't established proper support. I remember that another girl in Dreamcatcher is better but I forgot her name lol.
Do you mean Yoohyeon?
-
and you believed her lol fr? Yeah vocal type classifications are for classical music but that doesn't mean we gonna just skip it and call baritones tenors THE FACT THAT she classified herself as dramatic contralto/mezzo say a Lot about her conception of vocal types
She just one of those Youtube stans you see throwing big words even inventing new vocal types on their own ... A WHOLE BIG FAT MESS

Haha no it's more like I read it, read the rest and went: 'surely not, right?'
Then went about my business, a bts song played on spotify and I once again thought '.......right???'
Idk guess I was paranoid I was missing something lmao

Tf why was I downvoted I didn't even say it, I was asking
Who said that?
Here's a link to the reply I got: https://onehallyu.com/topic/738030-enter-talk-wasnt-it-crazy-after-bts-finished-their-stage/?p=28939073

Speaking of Taehyung, someone responded to me on a different thread and said he's a tenor, and now I'm thoroughly confused.

I have a lil dilemma. The other day I participated in filming for a short movie my friend is creatjng and my role required me to scream a lot. But after the filming, I noticed that I have a harder time in belting high (never was able to support it before but now it's gritty and airy) and my head voice (?)
sounds less connected than before and I have an audition in like 2 days and the song I've been preparing has a section in the chorus that requires me to sing a C, B and A (I'm a tenor) any tips on how to recover in time? It's been a couple of days and it has improved but I'm still not able to do it as easily as before
I had a really hard time getting over losing my voice after a cold once, and my vocal teacher recommended almost like, vocal fry exercises? It was trying to emulate throat singing except obviously not because I'd never tried to throat sing once in my life and I'm certain I sounded nowhere close. Plus I'm a girl so it felt weird trying to do something like that even if it had sounded good. But yeah it's kind of like massaging your vocal chords. Obviously use lots of air, don't squeeze your throat, drink lotsa water if your throat starts feeling scratchy etc.
Anyway that's the only strange piece of advice I have. Otherwise anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help, and stuff like the typical honey/lemon drinks may be of use to some people.

Having some trouble dragging my chest voice up into my head lately, any tips?
Are you doing scales and practising maintaining the same mouth shape/openness as you ascend? Doing different kinds of scales and reinforcing that muscle memory works. It's boring but it works.

This is a super late response to this but I just wanted to say that a relatively minor change in the sound of their voice like this can also be attributed to the difference in microphones and mixing used in the studio vs. on stage.
