Two weeks into their promotions, the release is proving to be a major success – their music video for title song “Only You†has exceeded 5 million views on YouTube, and more impressively, the song has achieved three perfect all-kills on digital music charts up to date, breaking the girl group record for the number of all-kills achieved with one song alone. This brings us back to Miss A’s earlier days; as a matter of fact it brings us all the way back to the group’s beginning, during which the Miss A broke another record amongst girl groups – the fastest time taken to win #1 on a music show. Expectations were high for their debut, partially because they were from JYP Entertainment, one of the “big three,†even more so because they would be the second girl group of the company after Wonder Girls, who were the top when it came to girl groups at the time. However, Miss A exceeded expectations with their debut. Their debut album Bad But Good was released on July 1, 2010, and just 22 days after their debut, they achieved their first win on KBS Music Bank with the title song “Bad Girl, Good Girl.†Looking back on their debut over 4 years later, Miss A certainly did set themselves apart from others right from the start. The lyrics of “Bad Girl, Good Girl†aren’t about pining for a boy, nor are they bubbly with the excitement of being in love; instead, the girls of Miss A warns those talking behind their backs to shut up, because they doesn’t know them. This probably contributed largely to the sassy image Miss A became remembered for, and it’s just as well, since the members brought a lot of that sassiness into their execution of the song as well. “Bad Girl, Good Girl†doesn’t feature any extravagant vocals, but the deep and strong voices of the members are just what the track needs. Furthermore, they are also able to project in their singing the confidence the song demands, especially during the “you don’t know me / so shut up boy†parts. The choreography of “Bad Girl, Good Girl†also managed to establish the members as great dancers – it is of considerable difficulty, as well as being on-point and subtlety sexy. There is pretty much no pause throughout the whole song, the members have to lie down and get up multiple times, and I’m pretty sure the dance to “Bad Girl, Good Girl†was the first I witnessed that ended with a standing split. Also contributing to the song’s popularity is the “you don’t know me†hand movements, which became frequently parodied by other celebrities covering the song. Finally, it’s always impressive to see rookies perform like they’ve already had a solid amount of stage experience, and I think Miss A definitely had that confidence and fierceness that comes with experience down right from the beginning. Over time, the group has grown and developed in different ways. Musically, the group has gone through a variety of concepts, such as the subsequent “Breath,†in which the yearning for a man expressed is quite different from the sassiness of “Bad Girl, Good Girl,†or “I Don’t Need a Man,†which is more along the lines of “Bad Girl, Good Girl†lyrically, but is much chirpier and upbeat in terms of melody. Miss A has also done some promotions in China, particularly the Chinese members Jia and Fei. Is it going to be bad-ass? Sensual? Fun? A unique point about Miss A is that they don’t stick to any fixed concept such as the Big Sexy-Cute Divide, fortunately allowing them room to explore and be known for their talents and performances beyond a certain concept. Although there were worries that Suzy‘s relationship with Lee Min-ho would detract from the group’s comeback, Miss A still managed to slay on the charts with an all-kill once the song dropped. This time around, fans are treated to this sugary, bubbly single “Only You,†and the teasers already hinted at a flirty and girly concept. Once again choosing to not use JYP as their producer, it’s a drastic change from their previous single “Hush†and more along the fun lines of “I Don’t Need A Man.†“Only You†opens up with blaring horns and accompanying snares, setting the atmosphere for the girls to chime in with the catchphrase of the song. The repetitive layering of “oohs†are reasonably well-placed, providing the added cherry on top to the texture of the song. The track also features a catchy hip-hop beat, which builds impressively in the pre-chorus, leading to the bright and cheery melody of the chorus. After which, the girls proudly boast that there’s “no other guy but only you.†It veers a little safe and forgettable for a Miss A single, coasting along till the end, leaving listeners wanting a little more oomph and theatrics. The lyrics are also standard K-pop fare, expressing the girls’ whole-hearted love for the lucky boy, who unfortunately doubts her commitment to him. Still, “Only You†might seem like a generic girl group pop single, but maybe because it’s Miss A, it definitely grows on you after a few listens. The MV has minimal plot action, but it’s such a visual treat that it’s riveting to watch. It’s a box MV, but the set is so saturated with colours and props that it draws the viewer in wonderfully. The perspective of the MV is seen through the eyes of a peeping tom, who is somehow fortunate enough to have a perfect view of the Miss A bedroom. He spies on them as they go about their daily routines, but the girls are no clueless females. They know about their stalker and take it upon themselves to tease him by literally dancing and making eye contact with said stalker. Hopefully, this doesn’t encourage any fans to attempt to replicate such a situation. It’s impossible to talk about Miss A without mentioning their flawless outfits. They are rarely caught in any fashion faux pas, and this time is no exception. Vibrant colours aside, their individual attire accurately suits each of their distinctive personalities, and they look a-ma-zing (as usual). Maknae Suzy is teasing in a halter top, kkapMin flaunts her cleavage with bomber jackets and a baseball cap, fashionista Fei pulls off classy mini dresses, and badass Jia struts her confidence in simple casual wear. The pink accents not only look girly and adorable on the quartet but also serve to present these girls as a cohesive group. In short, “Only You†is nothing outstanding but honeyed enough to satiate fans’ appetites. The prominent use of horns is something that’s becoming a more common feature in pop songs, and it does give “Only You†that little added bit of sass. The track is less memorable than most expected, but Miss A did the best with what they were given. All four girls have definitely improved in their live vocals and confidence on stage, and once again, Miss A shows that they have got what it takes to bring their A-game. [+92, -6] People keep saying 15& is a failure but... their songs have always charted in the top 5 and people consistently listen to them so how is that failure? Just because they don't promote on music shows or win on them doesn't mean they've failed. Then all of the ballad singers should be considered failures too. 2. [+61, -7] I think Jimin should've gone to promote in America when her 'Rolling In the Deep' cover from 'K-Pop Star' got her attention from American stars tweeting about her and CNN and ABC inviting her to their shows...
