  1. I took a "Which K-Pop idol is your soulmate" quiz and got Heechul as an answer, which made crack up.

I think if I had the chance to be friends with Heechul IRL it would be weird because I hate being mocked, still I could watch videos of him being savage all day :D

  2. Have any of you read books written by Peter Høeg?

Like Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow, The Quiet Girl, The Effect of Susan?

Slowly Peter Høeg is becoming my favorite author, his writing style mesmerizes me, his characters often have extensive knowledge about a variety of topics and it's amazing to see all the details he cares about. I wish I could see into his brain and witness his unique way of thinking.

  3. A while back I asked here if one of my threads could get pinned but haven't gotten an answer so far.

It's a big FAQ and might be useful to new users. I initially posted it in the Lobby but it might be more useful in the Member 411 section? (if it gets pinned so it won't drown in new introductions)

  4. I think C is the most likely. I don't see any benefits for him coming out at the moment. An aspect I think you're missing is that a decent amount of Koreans can even see that he's in a glass closet, so they would probably already be comfortable or uncomfortable with him serving in the military anyway. I think he'll probably use Korea's heteronormativity to his advantage until after his service and only come out if he feels secure, which I also don't really see happening...but who knows?

Thanks for pointing that out, I agree.

It leads me to the question how weird it must be serving in the army while being in the glass closet. Isn't it subversion of the system?

Did they invent the "no gays allowed in army"-rule because men share rooms with each other?

Which would make the glass closet situation look weird. Everybody knows, but because everybody closes their eyes it's not real?

I'm still looking, but it's hard to find out what the climate is currently like in the Korean military for gay men. There's a long history of physical and sexual abuse, and a lot of reports on suicide from men that had to endure that. At this point, I don't know what would happen if an openly gay man decided to enlist in the military. I don't think he would be able to pass the initial exam, which is a whole other mess.

Jo Kwon's lucky in that he's not really an idol, and wasn't really presented as one from the beginning. I could see him following in Hong Seok Cheon's footsteps in the far future but it won't be an easy path. Not only does he have to worry about the public, but also the men behind the curtain that run everything. Jo Kwon has a comfortable life, he's done well in his career, but he's not a big star. He could easily be quietly blacklisted and we'd be none the wiser.

I didn't mean an openly gay man enlisting in army, although I agree, that would be an entirely different universe of questions with answers still to be found.

Didn't Jokwon do theater? I could imagine him being accepted there, but I don't know if theater is a passion of his

  5. What if Jokwon actually came out?

(I'm not particularly good with words, so my apologies in advance. Also, I don't mean to pressure Jokwon and I'm sure he himself knows what he does and handles his situation well and knows how to protect himself. And sorry if this was already discussed to death without me)

Scanning the last pages I asked myself this question repeatedly and I'm not sure what would happen. Some of you said that Jokwon wouldn't come out since he still has to go to the army. If he came out, he wouldn't have to do mandatory army service - which would get him probably shunned twice by the Korean public: for avoiding army and for being gay. From what I've gathered Korean closeted gay men join the army to not receive discrimination or disadvantage in future work places, because their bosses could otherwise see their sexuality in their CV (if I'm not mistaken).

Jokwon is a celebrity, a public figure and if he came out, everybody would know, not just his future bosses. And a small positive part inside of me can't stop hoping that the people who employed Jokwon so far are well aware of his glass closet and didn't mind, so they might as well be ok with him being out. Also the entertainment industry is generally more open, as I understand it.

Putting the wishful thinking aside, maybe the tv stations that employed Jokwon so far don't want to be associated with LGBT+ topics (or being active supporters) and would therefore ban him from appearing?

And at this point wouldn't Hong Seok Cheon jump in and help Jokwon? He managed to come back to TVs after coming out and is generally successful.

*I just read the wikipedia article again, and never mind what I said, I found this: "Homosexual military members in active duty are categorized as having a "personality disorder" or "behavioural disability" and can either be institutionalized or dishonorably discharged." Now that does sound bad.

So possible scenarios could look like this

    A) Jokwon comes out, no army, causes an uproar, gets hate from many people but also support from people who are already out and from allies or international fans, he potentially paves the way for other idols to seriously consider coming out

    B) He comes out during military service, which is the worst possible thing he could do and extremely unlikely to happen

    C) He stays longer in the closet, does military service and gets credit for not skipping it, he can rely on a stable employment (if that exists in the entertainment industry...) because he's still in the glass closet. Maybe later he would consider coming out.

And what exactly do Koreans think about closeted gay men who did military service? If Jokwon came out later in his life would he get hate for having been in the army?

  6. Is there an "Official Visuals Thread" on OH? I mean, there are Official threads for vocals, dancing, rapping,...

Imagine the mess of an official visuals thread. What weird scales and rules would be set as standard for beauty?

Would it turn into a "My bias is the prettiest" disaster? Would people try to find the idol with the most symmetrical face?

Or draw lines on the faces and then talk about the golden ratio? And constantly derail from topic by discussing who had plastic surgery? And have long arguments about natural beauty? And add that international fans could never understand Korean beauty standards and are therefore unfit to judge? And start personal attacks like "you have to be beautiful to judge others"?

but then all of OH is like a visuals thread. Visual is part of kpop

(yes, that's the output of my brain at 2:30 am. I should go and sleep)

  7. There are already a lot of threads pinned in that section, but I'll ask the rest of the mods to see what they think.

How soon can I expect an answer? Or is no answer an answer too?

  8. I made a thread and would like to ask if OH is interested in pinning it?

"I wish I knew this when I joined OH" - I gathered some practical threads, tricks and how-tos for new members who aren't familiar with the site yet and asked other regular members to add what they found out. It combines FAQ and shows support to new members.

I feel like this could be useful to a lot of new members, but they're unlikely to find it if it isn't pinned I think.

Also, if you agree to pinning it but want me to change anything, I will gladly comply.

    Thank you  :)

  9. Tablo is an awesome human being and I appreciate his lyrics a lot.

    Dear TV, desensitize me.
    Give me more genocide please.
The world is your aphrodisiac so you stay turned on every minute, every second I breathe.
You weaponize greed, kill me with incessant I needs.
Got me checkin' out those and checkin' out these.
    Mainstream me, disinfecting my breed.
I'm looking for nirvana but you Geffenize me.
Point me to the skies till heaven's eye bleeds.
Anoint me with your lies then divinize me.
If heaven is a show, well, televise me.
But I won't lie my way in, no fakin' IDs.
I'll die standing. Try breaking my knees.
I'll do a handstand like I'm breakin'. Now freeze.
Don't act like you know me 'cause you recognize me.
You sell my record not me.

  10. If one of my posts was to be deleted by a moderator, would I be told about it / would I be made aware of it? Also, would this decrease my post count?

    Regarding trolls on OH

I'm confused, in the Rules you clearly stated that trolling is not tolerated and will lead to warning points / (temporary) bans. Yet there are some members who are known to be trolls and even their negative rep says "troll". How come they are still active?
