yeah you're right, it's more consistent the way he does it. I am not a writer or into film theory, but I do like writing and reading. I think I should read Edgar Allan Poe since I have a book of his works now that you mention him. And thank you for having this conversation with me! I like Junji Ito, but I have been a bit disillusioned since I don't see him as this great writer. I think his talent lies as a mangaka, specifically his artwork it's so effortless
-
Thanks and I don't know what you mean by ~that person~ since I think you are completely right. His endings really are a hit or a miss for me. But I don't consider unhappy endings to automatically be realistic. In all his stories I have read so far all the endings are really bizarre, and I always thought that surrealism combined reality with bizarre concepts. Hmm I have never watched La La Land, I thought it was a Junji Ito story, but I guess it's the Emma Stone movie? I am new to Junji Ito's works. As a writer I don't think he is amazing or anything. I just read that his idea for Gyo was inspired by Jaws. I think Jaws is definitely a movie that evoked fear and had people not wanting to go to the beach lol, but that idea has been outdated and I personally thought that the story never really was able to capture the concept of "fear of the unknown" like Eva mentioned
-
True. Well, I guess I am not going to like all of his endings, but he's still very imaginative
-
Could you clarify what you mean by his focus is much more realism other than the endings if you can really call his endings realism? I'd argue though that there isn't that much realism in Junji It's works, he pretty much feeds on extreme superstition and paranoia which I guess does reveal things about human nature but he takes it to a really extreme level
-
I am also looking forward to reading Tomie. Well ,I should clarify a bit more. I don't mind endings that are open-ended at all. Sometimes I feel as though he executes open-endings well like with Enigma of Amigara Fault (But funnily enough.... now that I think about it I wouldn't even call this story that much of an open ending since he pretty much offers an explanation for the "enigma" maybe my issue is that I wasn't satisfied with the explanation and the whole destiny/fate concept). I also find Hellstar Remina's ending to be the only satisfying thing about the story. But other times I think I think his endings are just bad. I agree with you though that I shouldn't be to preoccupied with the endings. And yes, I can't wait to read Uzumaki
-
I am saving Uzumaki for last, I have high expectations for that one. I don't mind Enigma of Amigara Fault. I don't even know if Junji Ito is that good of a writer lol, sometimes I feel as though he's just being creepy for the sake of being creepy and I think he loves to piss people off with his stories. He (almost?) always leaves you hanging, sometimes it works like with Enigma of Amigara Fault and Hellstar Remina and sometimes it doesn't like with Falling imo. And I'll check out Black Paradox!
-
So I finished reading the Enigma of Amigara Fault. It was actually pretty intriguing, but then it ended... in a way that left me cold tbh. I don't even know whether I am annoyed or not. I appreciate Junji Ito ending the story directly unlike in Gyo where the story digresses horribly and we are introduced to this weird ass circus. Another story that comes to mind is Hellstar Remina which actually has an interesting ending but the whole thing is a mess. I actually loved the message of the ending to Hellstar Remina, the idea that you fight so hard to survive only to realize that after surviving you are in an even worse position than you were before. Well that's what I got out of it lol. And after I finished reading Falling I wondered whether Junji Ito even knew what the hell was going on with those people. But yeah just a minirant I guess. I still love Junji Ito but I am having questionable feelings right now

depends for me, it can go either way. For my favorite anime (Sailor Moon) it's equal. DiC dub for SM is always going to be iconic bc they found amazing voice actors for the senshis imo, especially for the inners and Michiru. And of course the magical soundtrack that transported you into the SM universe in a way that the subbed soundtrack couldn't. The dubbed version also had A+ puns and managed to make certain aspects of the subbed version a little less kitchy (like Sailor Moon's speech/catchphrase) But I also love the subbed version just as much. The soundtrack is much more diverse, it draws inspiration from classical pieces, jazz music, rock... and the subbed version also has an iconic soundtrack of course. Also, less censorship.

my favorite animes are Sailor Moon Princess Tutu, Case Closed and Glass Mask. I love the 1984 version of Glass Mask the most because it stops where the story begins to spiral downwards. I also really like the 2005-6 version, but like I said the anime gets 'meh' around ep 24 (though episode 34 is really good) and it starts to suck a$$ when you get to the wolf girl Jane/battle for the role of the crimson goddess arc. The rivarly between Maya/Ayumi gives me life.

I like her! I definitely like Kriesha Tiu as well, but I do prefer Kim Sohee. I don't like syrupy voices, but her voice is sweet and clear and I think that she has more charisma on stage. I also find Kim Sohee a little prettier but that's irrelevant cause both are very pretty

sounds interesting, but the plot legit sounds like a creepypasta

there's one called Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress... but I guess it's not really a psychologically creepy anime, Wiki labels its genre as "post-Apocalyptic fiction, Steampunk" Maybe Berserk if you are willing to go down that path

no The Gods Must Be Crazy

Agree, though I was like when Haruka left Michiru after she was thrown off that cliff

Rei and Mamoru def didn't fit, I think that was even a point that the anime was trying to make which is why it was so tragic I think I love Haruka and Michiru bc in the end I really just love Michiru I'm a flop

yes, but the shitennous seem like more serious love interests and in that sense I think it could have put a damper on the relationship between the inner senshis, but that's all hypothetical of course! I haven't watched the musicals, but I don't even think the musicals went as far as to use those relationships, I think they only hinted at it, but I could be totally wrong. The Rei/Mamoru thing didn't bother me actually. I think it makes sense for someone else in the group to be attracted and in pursuit of a hot highschooler/college student lol, and the relationship was very short. I get that a lot of people don't like it cause it villainized Rei in a way though and even I didn't really "like" it. That's very interesting! But I think that the kiss ruins the momxchild thing But I am only halfway through the manga and I have only watched the first episode of Crystal so my knowledge is more limited I don't wear makeup, but I would totally get that tbh

I don't think I misunderstood you! I was just acknowledging that I know that the 90s anime isn't the original, don't worry! The idea of SenshixShitennou pairing comes off as very "pair the spares" to me idk so I am glad that that isn't really a thing except for a drawing, crystal, and some of the musicals(?). I am not as against it as some other people may be, but I think that if it really happened it would take away from the miraculous romance of Usagi and Mamoru and potentially take away from the strong relationship between the senshi. Well the Dark Mercury thing was just for a few epis and I think that it was even Naoko's idea? But don't quote me on that I think it added more flare to Ami's character and it made a lot of sense with the rest of the series (The girls were splitting up, going their separate ways and Ami was left alone. Being left alone meant she was vulnerable...) The idea of Uranus and Usagi is hmm odd. I am not as extreme as other people who think that it's AWFUL or that it was pedophilia (because of an "nonconsensual kiss" between them people can be so melodramatic) but I don't see the point of it either. I am totally here for that makeup though

Don't worry I know that the 90s anime isn't the original, but at some point weren't the manga and the anime being made simultaneously? The reason why Naoko could not really develop many ideas (is this the reason why she never did the senshixshitennou pairing or was this a later idea)? Of course the manga is the original, but what's canon or original doesn't matter to me as much. I'm halfway through the manga and it's definitely good, but I honestly find the anime better and really untouchable. At this point it's not even nostalgia speaking like before. So many of my faves get fleshed out much more (For example Neptune and Eudial, though the latter at the expense of the rest of the witches 5 except for maybe Mimette lol). I watched the first episode of Crystal, and I didn't like it BUT I am going to keep watching it because I love Sailor Moon and I do believe it will get better. Most people recommend season 3 from what I have seen, some people even recommend to skip everything before that. PGSM is great though omg the idea of Dark Mercury >>> I really want to watch the musicals, but I haven't gotten to it. I want to see Sayaka Fujioka's portrayal of Neptune.

Yeah, he was looking in her direction so I can see why that made fans really happy

cause people think they look good together, but Tzuyu>>> I don't think that moment was reliable tbh very few videos about idols "staring" at each other seem legit to me since you really don't know what they're looking at

Yeah that's true it's more underexposed than anything else :( the anime was a part of my childhood, it's amazing. I recommend to everyone lol even people who might not like it based on their taste
-
Lowkey but not completely and I guess it depends on the anime. I agree with you though, and even Sailor Moon, the most popular magic girl anime, gets darker than what's stereotypically expected. I did not know Princess Tutu was underrated, imo it's better than other deconstructions. I love how much it incorporates Tchaikovsky
