  1. [INTERVIEW TRANSLATION] Seohyun in Nylon (December 2019) “Seohyun Who Wants To Do Even Better” Q: You’ve shot countless editorials. Is it still fun for Seohyun? Every time I do a photoshoot, I enjoy the new side of me that unknowingly comes out. Style, pose and expressions that I don’t do normally get expressed differently each time. I become a bit more daring. Q: How was today? I think I asked the question already knowing the answer. I liked it because it’s a different concept that I haven’t tried yet so far. While monitoring, I kept unknowingly saying that it was fun. More than anything, I liked the collaboration of everyone on location today. Q: You haven’t done a project in about 2 years. As you said, I rested well. I recharged by exhausted body and purified my heart. I need to empty it so I can fill it again. I needed that time last year. Now I’m going to work. Q: The drama you’re doing this time is an one-act drama by JTBC, <Hello Dracula>. Last project you worked on had 32 episodes and the drama previous to that, had 50 episodes. Did a shorter drama feel unfamiliar? We completed shooting recently. It was my first time doing a short drama with 2 episodes of screen time, but that wasn’t a problem at all. More than anything, I received a lot of healing through this drama. When you look at the synopsis, it is a growth story of those who encounter issues that you want to avoid most in life. In this story, I play Anna who has lived according to her mom’s wishes but has a secret that she cannot tell. Q: Can you tell us about Anna’s secret? Secret is a secret. (Laughs) Check it directly when it airs. When I encountered the character of Anna for the first time through the script, the first thought that came to mind was, “Ah, would I be able to express her well?”. She is a character that you cannot summarize in one word. After completing the project, I was able to understand Anna; I hope many people will be able to receive understanding and warmth toward people through this drama. Q: As a singer, you used the name Seohyun for a long time. When you promote as an actress, you use your real name, Seo Juhyun. I wondered if you were using your names separately but that wasn’t really the case either… Do you have a standard for when you use Seohyun or Seo Juhyun? To the public, Seohyun is still more familiar than the name Seo Juhyun so I did think a lot about whether a more familiar name is better. But Seohyun and Seo Juhyun are the same. Both are me. So I decided not to overthink it and live as Seohyun going forward. Q: I personally like musical actress Seohyun, as I can see the singing of SNSD’s main vocal and your acting as an actress all at once. The meeting of those two sides of you and the energy on stage was impressive. I’ve continuously been on stage and it’s a place where I received the most love. Whenever I stand on stage, I always get strength. But acting also gives me a different form of joy. Honestly, if I was asked to choose between the two, I would need to think about it. Both give me such different kind of happiness. The only difference is the way of expressing and whether there is an audience or not, but the context of acting is the same. Q: Each time you complete a project, do you feel like you know a bit more? I tend to be hard on myself. I’m like that for everything. When I stand of stage as a singer, when I act. In the early days, when I monitored myself, there were lots of things I didn’t like but compared to that, the amount has lessened a bit. I want to act well to the point that I won’t be embarrassed whenever I see myself. More than anything, I like this work so much that I want to do it with a sense of responsibility. Being an actress is a job that requires a huge sense of responsibility. Q: You’re a person who knows the strength of responsibility and confidence. You are famous in the entertainment world for being good at self-care. Your personality must be one that is diligent in vetting yourself. I think so. No one is mapping out my life on my behalf, and we all live once so I want to live properly. (Laughs) That’s how cautiously I think and act. My personality is not impulsive, so I thoroughly think through various scenarios. Q: When you conclude ‘This is it’, do you tend not to change your mind? That’s right. I don’t regret much. (Laughs) Q: Did you have any incidents relating to the fact that your age ended in 9 last year? (Translator’s Note: There is a superstition around the number 9. ‘Kumiho’ is a 9-tailed fox in Korean folklore who is a ghost that couldn’t become human, so some people tend to avoid doing anything important when they’re at an age that ends in 9.) Uh… I didn’t even think about that. But I’ve had many hardships, not necessarily because I was at an age that ends in 9. (Laughs) Q: Thirty is a different starting point. When you think about it a certain way, it’s like starting from the beginning. When I look back to my teen years and my twenties, I think ‘I really lived diligently and fiercely’. In my thirties, I think I will have a bit more time to spare. Q: More than anyone, it seems your 20s were long. You must have memories of various times, are there times you want to go back to then? It was long. (Laughs) So I have no regrets at all. I don’t want to go back to then though. Of course there are many happy memories but life is what’s left ahead of you. I tend to be a perfectionist so before, when I would make one mistake, I would often think, ‘Ah, why did I do that? I want to turn back time and do it properly’ but now I think I can let go of that. Right now, what’s remaining for me is the future so there’s no point having regrets. Now I think, ‘Yes, it’s upsetting but I’ll learn from this and not repeat the same mistake next time’. That’s a lot more progressive and better for my mental health. Q: You’ve heard a countless times that you appear nice, as a result of the good-natured image that Seohyun possesses. In an interview, you said that a good-natured person is the ultimate winner in the end. That’s my belief. There are so many opportunities to be shaken in this belief in life. Words like ‘If you’re nice, you get used’ or ‘If you’re nice, you’re a pushover’ are not wrong at all. I felt it often too. Despite that, I have to live honorably and true to myself. You have to keep thinking about what is even more essential. At the end, that’s what I believe will win. Q: In order to have beliefs like that, you must have gone through many experiences over a long time. You’ve been in social life for a very long time. If you started at a normal company in a different career, are you confident you can do well? I’m confident I can live well even if I was dropped in the desert alone. (Laughs) I’ve become that much stronger. I used to be delicate and vulnerable but now I have a lot of confidence. Occasionally there are times when I pity myself but every person becomes stronger through the experiences they go through. There’s nothing I am afraid of right now.
