they were pissed bc the character in the novel was a side character but was basically being given the same status as a lead character in the drama, by throwing aside Lan Wangji (the male co-lead) for Wen Qing (a female side character) + people thought there was going to be a love line between Wei Wuxian (the other male lead) and Wen Qing, when no such thing exists in the novel, making it a large divergence from the OG plot

I'm- Some of the best characters in this show are females lmao There's a whole ass Madam Yu, who's a badass in literally every adaption of MDZS like this scene, is literally one of the most badass scenes (they replicate it in the drama as well) RE: people getting pissed at screen time. It was bc she was basically replacing Lan Wangji (WYB character) as the 2nd main lead, when the character in the novel (Wen Qing) is relegated to a side character

Nope it's up to S2, they're not even halfway through the source material for the donghua yet. They're both amazing! S3 isn't out till 2021, though Mo Dao Zu Shi: Q will be out this year, it's a Chibi series

Don't read the novel first is all I'll say, unless you want to go into your viewing experience with extremely high expectations. Like the show is AMAZING, but they made slight differences between the source material (mostly for the better). If you want the complete story with a more heavier romantic subtext go for the drama. If you want WWX as an absolute badass, go for the Donghua (anime), there's also a great audio drama that I'd also recommend (look for Suibian Subs on Tumblr to find it).
