  1. oops meant to edit my last one but quoted it.
  2. Because I don't think she's straining due to lack of vocal ability. :P I say she failed to sound like Mariah, for I've noticed she attempts to impersonate foreign singers when singing foreign songs--especially Celine. I think had she just sang naturally without forcing herself in such a way, it would have been better. I don't think it is weaker than the music, though, and I'm not sure why you don't hear it when I hear it above everything perfectly fine. But, yeah, we'll have to disagree on that one. I just got on a computer, so I'm looking for some clips. This one is pretty recent, and I'm including it to illustrate that she does have a stylistic preference to be gruff at times. You'll see what I mean when you watch it. It's obviously intentional. But, around 4:10 she belts, and the sound is well-supported and resonant. The opening runs are all open, too. Granted this performance is a little older and the quality isn't that great, but I'm including it just because I believe it shows how powerful and resonant her voice can be when she wants it to be. This clip is to illustrate this sound is entirely a stylistic preference. It's actually adlibbed, and I think it shows that her musicality isn't to be scoffed at. EDIT: This has a nice Bb5 belt around 2:20 2:40or so. For this one, the performance is a duet and starts around eight minutes. Her voice is very resonant and powerful here and she exhibits a great deal of control. There are some amazing performances from her early years, too, but that doesn't necessarily reflect her abilities now, so I won't include them. At the very least, after watching these, I hope you'll see that she's a good deal better than what one would initially judge from her "Without You" performance.
  3. I call it projected because I do it hear it over ë”ì› and the music. I just don't think it was emphasized as much because it wasn't as sustained. I still base the pitchiness off the language, and the stained sound as a result of attempting to produce a sound similar to Mariah in a language she doesn't speak. By this, I mean mimic a tone she doesn't usually produce. In that respect, it is intentional, not that she managed to achieve the sound she wanted, which I still chaulk mainly up to language and then to singing in a tone she usually doesn't. You could call it a bad musical decision, and that's fair enough, but I think it was more of her attempt to try and be as close to the original in sound as possible in an attempt to minimize her acccent. It obviously didn't work, but, again, I don't think staying on pitch was her main priority, and this is by far one of her worsr performances. I wouldn't say she had trouble hitting the notes: she can hit them just fine. I've already stated why I think they sounded as they did here. Yes, we will probably get no further in debating this particular performance.
  4. But, her voice is projecting over ë”ì›'s there, and there is resonance. Yes, it isn't as projected as some other notes, but I still think that's more to do with her choice of emphasis rather than lack of ability. I think that's intentional, to be honest. Yes, your friend is right, except she's more than just good. Huang Ma has her own style, and being gruff/having that "strained" sound is part of it at times, but she's also demonstrated she's completely capable of hitting the same notes with bell-like quality. It's really just how she chooses to sing. She is light years ahead of Xtina. @@
  5. Really? I hear her quite clearly there. @@ I'll look for some. I actually have some posted in other threads, but one is another English song, and the other two are from about 12~14 years ago. (She was about SoHyang's age from I Am A Singer in one, I believe.)
  6. Yes, but it's live not ling, and many Chinese struggle with final consonants. This was an obvious case of that. Alright. Haha Goodnight.
  7. I've noticed an attempt by her to mimic the sound of others when singing foreign songs (she can do Celine dead-on), so I think her sound was more important than the actual resonance of the belts. The volume dropped because the part wasn't emphasized as much, but she's still heard clearly over ë”ì›, and I do hear resonance on the "you~~" I'll post some Chinese songs later, and you'll hear a marked difference.
  8. Most sounds are carried over, I believe, and not emphasized as an ending sound. I'm simply stating she attempted the sound and missed due to her accent.
  9. Side note upon relistening: 3:44, She holds the note twice because she missed the "v" consonant, so instead of holding and even "liiiive," she broke it into "liii iiii." Mandarin has no finanl consonants, and many Chinese speakers struggle with them.
  10. I'm on my phone, too. No worries. Haha Language is tricky. Some people are better than others with foreign languages. She's obviously not so great. When you can't even pronounce words clearly, it isn't reasonable to assume one should sing the song entirely in key. I heard resonance on all the low notes, to be honest. I didn't hear strain in the off key (if you mean the last ones?), and the others were stylistic. She's got great breath control, but I wouldn't expect you to judge that from this performance. No, I would call her singing that at 3:33 simply because she can resonate with that, even if she didn't here. Now, if you want to judge her singing, I'll post other videos for you tomorrow that are much more representative of her abilities, but I refuse to try and make a case from a singer's worst performance.
  11. Ahmin, the language is important because it requires one to produce sounds foreign to them. She's not a Kpop star exposed to English and probably educated in it. She's a middle-aged Chinese woman. Her biggest issue was probably trying to get her final consonants in. :P Again, I don't think she was trying to fit the overall key, especially not at the end, so I think how she hit the notes is more important than what she hit. I say the last notes aren't pitchy because I don't think she meant them to go with the music. She hit what she wanted to hit whether it was artistic or not. Her low notes aren't inaudible. (not sure why you didn't hear them?) I'm honestly confused there because I heard them fine. I can link to a different performance tomorrow. Again, this is one of her worst performances, so I wouldn't judge her off this. 3:33 was just her being her. XD It's aggressive.
  12. Jiyul, Huang Ma is resonant up to (according to her official profile) an e2, but the lowest I think I've heard is a g2. I am still unsure of her head shaking and C6 belts, but I'll be more than glad to hear your opinion on that tomorrow after I post my link. Yes, she is versatile but not as versatile. Huang Ma (despite what many here seem to believe) has a a characteristic soulful raspy quality she adds to her voice, and I believe many have misunderstood this here to be strain, rather than choice. She also can change the tone of her voice in a variety of ways that I haven't heard Sohyang do. Rouga, it is still much more developed, and she has a greater upper register (range wise) that she's able to use. Now, range is obviously not as important as how one utilizes it, so I'm not trying to say she's got a better upper register because of it. However, Huang Ma can belt at least a C6 and can vocalize continually in a Bb5 belt. I've heard her vocalize up to an E6 in head voice.
  13. JiYul, when I have use of a computer, I'll link you to what I mean.
  14. Rouga, I'm using my phone, and don't know how to quote from it, so I'll post here like this. No, she's not worse for her F#6 being bad. I say she's worse because she has a lower register less developed, questionable resonance in her upper register, and her lack of versatility in comparison. Comparing Huang Ma to Sohyang now is more of an even field, but Huang Ma is forty-six and well past her vocal prime and still has a voice that is comparable. That being said, I think BOTH are great singers who have very different styles.
  15. Really? They just always seemed to peak for me, as the actual C6 was never sustained for long. That being said, even if they lack resonance and simply peak, it could be more choice than lack of ability.
  16. No, she resonates as she comes down, but there is little resonance on the actual note. She kind of peaks there--at least from what I've seen. I'm not meaning to say Huang Ma's is better. Just that they're both good. :P Yes, I know it's not a deciding factor. Again, I'm only mentioning Huang Ma in comparison because someone else did first, but I apologize if you weren't meaning to do that. :P
  17. I'm speaking more of her belts in her sixth octave, and (I believe) her F#6, which wasn't well supported and had laggy vibrato. :P When not pushing the extent of her range, it's not bad, but it isn't better than Huang Ma's, either. Again, I would prefer not to continue this discussion. My primary reason for commenting was the highly disrespectful attitude taken towards a very good singer and the mocking attitude towards her musicianship (plus a comment stating that he wished for me to come back).
  18. Speaking of Sohyang, I think this is my favorite performance from her.
  19. No, she's not. She couldn't even pull off that performance of "Without You." She doesn't have the lower register to do it, and she doesn't resonate well when singing in the sixth octave. She's got an excellent mid register and is a great singer, but she's not the best. Again, I'm not trying to bring it up. I also find it hypocritical the same people who down voted everything I said about it and got irritated that I brought it up are the same ones posting these videos to criticize someone and bring the comparison up AGAIN.
  20. I don't see how they were off key at all, and the last sustained note was great. Her lower notes were resonant and well supported. Yes, the performance was a little awkward at times because she was singing in a language she doesn't know. She is still better than Sohyang (not that I'm trying to make this an argument again; I'm really not). This isn't the video I'd suggest you watch to judge her vocal abilities--though, it does show her ability to utilize a very wide range very well. But, if I had to rate her performances, this would be near the bottom. :P

  22. It's not just one cracking, and even if it were, I'm not making as big a deal about her cracking as much as everyone else is me talking about it.
  23. Guys, look. Everyone was bashing because a claim was made that didn't have a video to back it up, and people were saying "so-called vocal cracks/gruffness" and what have you. But, when a video is posted that shows this, why do y'all have to get so uptight about it? If another singer sings poorly, people note it and move on. What's the big deal here? Why is it so bad to post in a VOCAL thread about someone's VOCALS? There's nothing more to it. If you ask for video evidence and get it, just look at it. If you don't think it represents her as a vocalist, by all means say so, but there's no point in acting as if I just labeled her the worst thing to hit the planet. She is good, but she's not without flaws. Y'all acting like I'm drinking some serious haterade, but I'm just posting what people asked someone to do.
  24. I know enough to know that she didn't make a good note there. And, honestly, I said that so I wouldn't get embroiled in anything under the pretense that I'm a vocal expert; I'm not an expert. But, it doesn't take an expert to show that someone's voice cracked and that they went off melody. Even the most untrained ear can tell you when someone's voice cracks.
  25. It still doesn't make her a consistent vocalist.
