https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiMd74XvH3w Wow, I saw her compilation video for the Chinese "I Am a Singer," and she only got three songs, so I figured she wouldn't be so great, but woooow. She amazed me. Something about her voice reminds me of SoHyang.
-
Well, she's 63 there. But she exhibited great ease in her lower register when she was younger until at least her mid fifties. Yeah, maybe her tone is just kinda darkish. I think she's probably not contralto. Thanks
-
So, is Yang Hee Eun (the short-haired one) a contralto? She goes into her lower register with such ease, but when she was younger she had such a bright sound to her upper register that I thought maybe she could be a mezzo. I know this one is studio, but she goes pretty low here, and she's a pretty solid live performer. She's 63 here. She goes pretty low at :46 (IDK what note it is if someone is kind enough to tell me :D) again at 1:59/2:18/2:20 All pretty low.

I didn't know it was a Korean song. Huang Qishan released a version of it a few years back. I knew it was a cover song, but I didn't know it was from Korea! Wow.
-
Sun Nan's reaction (5:54) to Jane Zhang's strain fest at 5:49 is priceless. The guy before Sun Nan was just looking like "girl, why'd you even try?" LOL But seriously, even though I think most people know her for her high whistle register, her upper register is quite bad.
-
Not Ahmin, but I think I can give an answer. From China, Sun Nan, Han Hong, and Huang Qishan are all pretty good. I'd say Sun Nan is the most consistent, and I'd say he's excellent level. From Korea, Yang Hui Eun, Song Chang Sik, Lee Sun Hee, and SoHyang are all good. Yang Hui Eun is like a Korean Judy Garland. Son Jak Sik is probably Korea's best male vocalist, even though he's pretty old now. So, he's well past his prime. I think LSH and SoHyang are pretty well-known.

These two are really good. I'd say that (in their prime--they're 63 and 68 now) they rank right up there with the best in Korea. The man ì†¡ì°½ì‹ had/was recovering from vocal nodules here and still delivers a solid performance. The woman (ì–‘í¬ì€) is just insane. Also, they both write their own music (which I think is pretty neat). She's already in her mid-fifties here, but she still delivers such a great performance. Here, she is either 60 or 61. Really an insane vocalist. It's a shame there aren't many clips from her early career.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgA9Z91wzfg Hey, y'all. What's the note around 23:20? The part at "wo"?
-
Beyonce. Beyonce has an incredibly agile voice.
-
So, she's actually better than I thought: But, I'm pretty sure she's had extensive classical training. She broke into an impromptu operatic performance on another show, and it was clear that she's had training. EDIT: About 36:40 or so, she does a line from "O Mio Babbino Caro" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqscBEyxI0g Her upper register is still inconsistent at times now, but when she was younger, she seemed pretty comfortable there.
-
Hey, y'all What's the note around 1:09~1:10? Thanks!
-
Thanks! As for Tan Wei Wei, she struggles in her upper sometimes from what I've heard--at least when she's doing Western style music. I've read somewhere that she trained under a very highly regarded folk singer, so while I don't know much about Tibetan vocal technique, I do believe she's good at it just because of her training. Tan Wei Wei actually covered Huang Qishan's new gospel song on the show here: While there are others here more qualified to review her than I am, towards the middle, I believe Tan Wei Wei does a poor job on the upper notes. I think she lowered the key a bit, but she gruffed the first one out anyway at 3:05 and after the climax, she's lost her breath. You can hear her lose what support she did have very noticeably around 3:17 on 是 (shi). While it's possible she gruffed the note stylistically, I felt it was more like she couldn't quite hit the note and had to find another way to make it stand out. For the majority of the song, she doesn't change much from the original arrangement until it gets a bit high. Around 2:28 her 的爱 (de ai--pronounced di ai here) is off. Her 的 is strained, and she gruffs the note following it instead of going higher. Other than that, I think she pretty closely followed the original version, here: Now, issues aside, the song is beautiful and I was so happy to see her to sing it. I guess she's a Christian, but I've never seen anything about it before, so maybe she has some gospel music of her own? My favorite performance from her was "Firework" because her tone was so similar to Katy's. Now, I agree with Sun Nan being the best male vocalist on the show. For females, I think the best vocalist is Han Hong. Han Hong actually had to grow on me a bit, though. She's got a very beautiful and clear voice, but she strains sometimes in her upper (starting maybe around F5~G5, and I've even seen her attempt to move her microphone to replicate a vibrato on some of her upper notes. I'm not saying they're always bad, but she is very inconsistent there. I've seen some of her performances from when she was younger, and they sounded better, but I've not done a lot into it. Like Tan Wei Wei, she does a lot of folk music, and she's really respected in China. That being said, her mid register is very bombastic and big, and her upper lower/lower mid region seems really well developed, too. Her voice sounds highly trained sometimes, but then when she does things like moving her microphone, I really have to wonder. The One actually did (in my opinion) quite a bad cover of Han Hong's: Anyway, that's a bit long of a post, but it's nice to have someone to talk to about it.

No, I can't.

Have any of y'all ever listened to Sun Nan? He's a Chinese vocalist who first caught my attention as a judge on The Most Beautiful Harmonies show, and now he's a finalist on the Chinese I Am a Singer. He's actually like crazy good, I think. I don't think he's got such a wide range, but I've heard him go up to about A4# with resonance. He makes use of dynamics quite a bit, and his entire range (from what I've seen) seems really well supported. I think he's possibly the best vocalist on the show, and The One seems to like him, too. Just curious if any of y'all know anything more about him. He's like forty-six now, and I can't really find many performances from when he was younger, but I think it'd be interesting to see.

Sohyang's range is to what? D3? And she can only support down to G3. That's quite a gap. Beyonce has a better upper register in comparison to SH's lower register, I think. I think LSH's lower register is pretty good, certainly better than Sohyang's, but I honestly can't tell you her range. I know Ahmin said her Eb3 (I think) was a bit quiet but was surprised at the support behind it. So, I mean I don't know if it's considered "great," but it's certainly pretty good for a soprano. Huang Qishan has a very inconsistent lower register now, but she's supported down to about E3 pretty nicely, and I believe it was pretty solid when she was younger. Again, shaky and inconsistent now, but at SH's age she could support down to E3. Her bottom note is C3, but it's pretty quiet and not so good, but she's only ever gone that low once to my knowledge, and that was recently. So, no, not good now, but it used to be.
-
Ahh. I thought he was listed as great to excellent. Thanks for correcting me. Lee Sun Hee is also a great vocalist, at least, I think. Probably more. Ock Joo Hyun is up there, too, but I don't know exactly where.
-
SH isn't considered an excellent vocalist still, though, so I don't agree with her being the best. Like someone said, Naul is also placed at her level.
-
I thought SH wasn't considered excellent because of her lower register. Isn't Beyonce better?
-
As noted, I might have jammed the time up a bit in my head. TBH, since about July, it feels like time hasn't really passed for me at all. :rlytearpls:With that being said, I didn't intend to cause an argument just to give my opinion.
-
No, I'm saying I've done it before, but I've recently been reading where people were told to stop doing it, and I thought that the ones saying not to do it actually had a point and changed my mind. So, yeah, the ones who say not to do it with some singers and then don't have a problem with it when it's another singer, I think that's hypocritical. When you said to stop posting LSH videos but didn't tell JiYul to stop when it was 3-4 SH slayage videos at a time, yeah, I think that's hypocritical. Anyway, I won't say anything about it anymore. If people want to post it, fine. I just think it goes against the purpose of the thread.
-
I know, it's just that I've been thinking about this for a LONG time, so maybe my time frame isn't the best because it all kind of ran together in my head, and I apologize if I goofed it.
-
No, there was a misunderstanding about the time stamps because he posted the HV part (which was what was being pointed out) and you followed with the belts, so it didn't make sense (from what I remember). ANYWAY, I'm not saying you're right or wrong, and I know I've posted videos here of Babs, LSH, Sumi Jo, etc, so my hands aren't clean in all of it, but I'm just saying that I don't see the point if it's not educational, and I know I personally won't be doing it anymore, but I'm just saying, others have been told to stop, and I think it should apply to all vocalists without splitting hairs trying to justify it one way or another.

You weren't asked by him on here. It was the blog, and it was a note that was debatable (like the tension you hear with The One which at least two people here didn't hear as well, but you didn't act as if they dismissed you. ) in ONE video, and you said it had slight tension and push but wasn't strained or bad, just not good. . Nothing about it being screechy. He provided videos to show her head voice, not get an assessment over two questionable belts towards the top of her belting range. You incorrectly stated the time stamp the first time, so of course it was dismissed. I do believe he eventually stated he didn't agree (like some here don't with you), but didn't have a problem with it because she was already in her forties and past her prime. So, don't act like it was completely ignored. It wasn't. There's no point in bringing that up, tbh. If I brought up, SoHyang's lower register notes or the head shakin' like I did the first time (which wouldn't be relevant here as well), people would have a FIELD DAY. Again, if you didn't have a problem with it, why were YOU the one who asked for the LSH videos here to stop being posted? The other videos posted were better than the one you watched on the blog anyway (which, again, DEALT WITH HER HEAD VOICE and not upper belts), and no one asked questions about them. But, you didn't like it being posted. Don't be a hypocrite. I personally don't have a bias against any singer posted in this thread and very rarely listen to Korean music in general. I'm just stating how I see it. The point of it being, I don't see the point in posting a video that doesn't answer a question or contribute to the knowledge of a specific vocalist. Multiple times the thread has been stated to be a place of education. What's wrong with saying that we should keep it that way.

I DID post videos and got attacked. Looking back, I was wrong about some of it, and I feel like I've learned some. That's why I'm here. But, when I did post videos of quality performances, MOST of the time, I got no reply until I was told to quit doing it. IDK. Maybe it's my personality. I just don't like seeing hypocrisy like that, tbh. I don't do it with the intention of starting stuff, but maybe my intentions don't translate well into written form.
