Thank you so much for this. As a huge fan of Sulli, I always noticed the sexism that she experienced. I am so relieved to read your comment. I have ont been on this website in a while but when I saw what he said I hoped someone would acknowledge the misogyny they faced because I had to see those comments everyday, even from i-fans.

You're welcome. I remember the comments Sulli and Hara recieved too. For me, Hara's assault case and the sickening comments she received from men even after evidence was out will never leave my mind. It's a crime how they were treated.

And misogyny, whether externalized or internalized, 100% played a major role.

I disagree with Heechul here. I am aware he is in pain, but it was intact, very related to issue with sexism. Heis type to say both sides are bad and have bad points, but in the end sexism plays a key role here, and as long as people stop talking about it out of fear of hurting people, it will continue to exist.

He is probably still suffering so much and I don't think he is ready at all to deal with a discussion like this. Especially if he can't keep him emotions in check and have a reasonable polite discussion on an open platform which is exactly what the journalist was doing.

He is trying to erase the role sexism played in Hara and Sulli's suffering, it may not be intentional, but that's how people and the media will take his words. And silencing the issue does nothing, the double standards and sexism that hurt Hara and Sulli will continue to be widespread.

Considering Heechul has once said talking about sexism is only making "gender wars" worse, I'm not surprised with his take on this at all...

The reporter has published many serious piece on social issues he's not a "hater".

Now he is harrassed by heechul stans. Not a good move, Heechul

Yes, I don't know why you were downvoted here. I came into this issue wanting to support Heechul and I left it confused and a bit hurt at what he was implying. That led me to look at his past statements towards issues of sexism and he has several times stated that he thinks discussions about inequality between men and women create petty gender wars and just....it feel like he wants to create some sort of "peace" between the genders but you can't do that if you don't address the inequality there!! He's effectively supporting the position of silencing women's voices in the name of "petty gender wars," and he probably doesn't MEAN to be, but that's what he's doing and it's honestly kind of horrible to see.

The reporter is a thoughtful one who has spoken about broad social issues before. Heechul took this too far honestly, labeling him as a hater and threatening to sue.

"But I don’t think anyone should speak on the behalf of the deceased who can no longer do so" He needs to fuck off. Honestly if someone said that to me I would go off too. The reporter is in the wrong. He's acting like he knows the entire situation and trying to pretend like Heechul doesn't respect women or doesn't understand feminism when he was the one supporting Sulli and Hara from the very beginning. Heechul was the one who saw what they went through up close and knows more about what happened than some reporter who thinks he knows.

In the reporter's statement he is not acting like he knows everything. In fact, he explicitly says SEVERAL times "I can’t dare comprehend the anger of Kim Heechul, who lost two close colleagues. I don’t think that I can assess the pent-up anger of losing a close colleague and don’t have the slightest intent to denigrate his pent-up anger." Only THEN did he go on to say: "But I don’t think anyone should speak on the behalf of the deceased who can no longer do so, and I think that this kind of critical reading is necessary.”

He is right. Criticism of society and the causes that lead to such tragedies are absolutely necessary if there is ever to be change in Korea for how women are treated! Heechul was Hara and Sulli's friends and he supported them and loved them, but he never lived their lives. He didn't experience the type of shaming and suffering they did. He can believe himself that women and men played an equal part in their suffering, but not everyone has to agree with him and erase the role misogyny and sexism played in hurting them. This reporter said nothing but the truth here and it is sad that people can't see it, despite the very logical and balanced way he approached this sensitive topic.

    Thank you for clarifying.

You're welcome. It seems like on twitter and allkpop only Heechul's statement was translated and his fans were spreading info that the journalist is some sort of Heechul anti instead of a journalist who very respectfully handled this topic. I really don't like it when misinformation like this spreads and as much as I love Heechul, his response was way out of bounds here.

I don't know how people can say with a straight face that Heechul is right in erasing the role mysogyny played in Sulli and Hara's abuse.

He has no right to erase it. I get that he loved them. I get that he's hurting. But who is he to belittle (albeit unwittingly) all the suffering they received from society's misogyny and sexism as a "petty fight between men and women?" I can't imagine that Sulli and Hara, who were both such proponents of women rights (Sulli speaking up about double standards, Hara who involved herself in the Burning Sun scandal etc) would agree with his thoughts about dismissing the topic of disparity between men and women in society. Heechul seems to be coming from a good place here but what he's essentially saying is "Both men and women are equally to blame and there is no gendered issue" when so much of what they suffered has roots in misogyny and gender inequality.  I feel that what he's saying is a disservice to Sulli and Hara's memory, honestly.

Fine, he can believe continue to believe that conversations about sexism are "destroying relationships between men and women," he can choose to believe that sexism and misogyny isn't a real issue. But to attack this journalist who chooses to raise awareness for that topic (and in a very balanced, respectful manner too!) was wrong of him and he is clearly coming from a place of ignorance that I cannot find in me to support.

  3. Listen, I love Heechul. I really do. And I feel for all that he's going through after losing two of his close friends. I can understand why he wouldn't want to see their names being used in some sort of agenda. But after reading what the columnist ACTUALLY said, I can't say I agree with Heechul here.

This is what the columnist said:

He wrote, “I can’t dare comprehend the anger of Kim Heechul, who lost two close colleagues. But the late Sulli had not only male malicious commenters but also female malicious commenters. And even if it’s true that there was a change in their attitudes, I think it was misjudgment to replace this as ‘conflict between genders’ and say that both sides were in the wrong. To be more specific, it’s true both male and female malicious commenters were in the wrong, but it’s a logical leap to conclude that both males and females are in the wrong in the ‘conflict between genders’ based on those grounds.”

The writer continued, “Even under the assumption that male and female malicious commenters were both in the wrong, the male-centered arguments were what were realized as the official attacks against the deceased. Even though malicious commenters of all genders existed, the majority of those who respected and supported Sulli’s life were female feminists.”

He added, “Once again, I don’t think that I can assess the pent-up anger of losing a close colleague and don’t have the slightest intent to denigrate his pent-up anger. But I don’t think anyone should speak on the behalf of the deceased who can no longer do so, and I think that this kind of critical reading is necessary.” Credit: Soompi

The columnist is one who has reported on women rights in the past from what I've read and what he's saying here is that you can't say that Hara and Sulli weren't victims of misogyny. Because they absolutely were. Yes, hate commenters were both male and female, but sexism and double standards for women and misogyny definitely played a massive role in the hate they received. Especially, look at Hara's case and how she was shamed as the VICTIM whereas the perpetrator got off scott free and lived his life fine. I remember being there when the assault news first came out and I'll never forget the vitriol she received.

Some things are meant to be remembered and criticized and yes, the role of society's misogyny and standards towards women, which treated Hara and Sulli so poorly, is one of them.

So I understand Heechul. I sympathize with him. But I also can't agree with him. He really misconstrued what was being said here.

  4. They have never been like this, it's a bit shocking considering their normal characters but it just goes to show you how badly SM has fucked up and disappointed them. They made SUHO, the nicest most polite guy you could ask for when it comes to professional settings straight up talk about how SM no longer puts any effort in them and that they ARE considering moving to a different label. This not saying thank you to SM is the final middle finger because they have consistently tried the best for that company only to have their efforts thrown in their face.

I suppose I should be scared? I'm glad instead. Relieved that EXO is willing to publicly make their stand and that they are fighting against SM 4 years before their contract expires. This is prime negotiation skills at work and it's smart of Suho to put that pressure on SM. They wouldn't want to lose their golden goose, the group they put 0 investment in but still gain massive profit.

Same here. It feels very emotional seeing this very honest interview. Reflecting on their time in the group. You can *feel* their bond, although those stories about SuBaek and ChanSoo are literally making me 😪 They are brothers at this point.

OT12, OT11, OT10, OT9 -- even the current 6 -- that EXO group dynamic is like magic in a bottle and almost impossible to manufacture or recreate.

There's just something so authentic about their dynamics, they never try to flaunt it, it's just always subtly there so it's extra heartwarming when we gain a peak into their lives and their thoughts. Knowing that they regularly talk about what they'll do as a group for their contracts also kind of settles my worries; whatever way they end up going, they decided it together and they'll always be EXO in my heart. After everything they've gone through together, they're basically a family and they always will be. 😭

  6. This whole thing is making me tear up a bit. The way they talk about their past and how far they've come, how they're satisfied with what they've accomplished and just want to try being content in life and just try to find their own happiness. The idol life is difficult and EXO has gone through so much, I wish nothing but the best for them, no matter which avenue they want to try next, no matter whether they stay in SM or not. Knowing how close the members are, how Suho would message Baekhyun with those comforting messages or Ksoo would silently stay at CHanyeol's side when he was recovering...why is their bond so pure 😭 my heart is melting.

I'm happy that they were so honest here, it really has put some of my concerns to rest. I'm glad that they are at that point in their lives where they feel they have nothing else to prove and just want to find contentment. As they said "we've spent all our lives running to get here'...there's no need to run anymore. Damn I don't know why I'm getting so emotional out of nowhere.

I will always be on Team Happy EXO.

  7. I actually have to log in and upvote you seeing as you just posted news and got negged right away.

Guess no one wants to accept that EXO is still doing great. And before anyone brings it up like they did in the last thread with pressed replies, they debuted #3 at 6 PM. Even if it's "only fans' streaming I'm happy with the proof that almost 8 years in EXO still has that strong fandom and that they can fight for  place on the charts with digimons.

Literally cannot stop replaying this 😭
